Congrats on the big Bird! Here in Loveland CO trying to get ready for test and need to find a falconer to work with. Wish i could find someone like you near by i would be all for it! Been wanting to do this for about 15 years and really ever since i was a little kid but have had the study guide for 13 years and held off till now for the same of room for a mews and space and time. Love your channel have been watching all your videos and appreciate it all. It’s a great take on the frustrations and perseverance
Nice bird, and thanks, it’s been quite a journey to get this far and I’ve been frustrated and discouraged but I’ve made contact with a falconer who has agreed to sponsor me and is excited to do it, we plan to trap my first bird before Christmas, like you I would have preferred a younger bird but I’m so glad it’s coming together and glad I’ve got folks like y’all . Yes we say y’all . Thanks
That’s a monster. Had the red tail here a couple weeks ago trying to get the squirrel in my tree. It was hysterical. The poor squirrel was looking up at the hawk and down at my Siberian husky waiting for it. The hawk wasn’t even phased we were sitting out there watching with my kids playing. Can’t wait to see this beast hounding squirrels when she’s ready.
Thanks Suzie! Oh wow what state do you fly a Merlin in? I was considering trapping one next season here, especially to have something to hunt sparrows, starlings and pigeons with in the off season. What is your take on the Merlin so far - good and bad?
@@FinsandTalons So far it has been a slow process. My husband is also a falconer and he flew a Merlin Falcon last year. She was fantastic. This little bird is very nervous and it has taken some time to get him into the program. We are in NC out on the coast. No red tails on our island. I have flown a male kestrel and a red shouldered hawk. I really think I am a hawk person but needed a bird on the license this year. Hoping he shapes up but this warm weather here makes them not as motivated. LOL
@suziescholten Ahh I see. I've never flown a Merlin nor do I have any friends that have flown them. If I'm lucky enough to get one next year, hopefully it works out. Good luck with yours and let me know if you two start cranking out the kills.
What a chunk!!! Everytime I watch your videos I wish we had passage take here in the UK, such an incredible form of falconry (not that our captive bred birds aren't incredible but it's so different.) Hope to see her in action soon, and I'm excited to see what her hunting weight will be
It would definitely take a lot of fun out of the sport if we couldn't trap here. Several falconers get permits to trap just for the fun of it. Yeah the chest on this bird is like a bowling ball!
Oh man that’s a big girl. As far as females I’ve flown 3 that were trapped hog fat at 50+ and a couple that were trapped sharp between 40-42 oz. All of these birds regardless hunted between 40-43 oz their first seasons. The sharp ones were just in the field earlier haha
That's what I've been saying, is she's a small eagle! 😂 I also am curious to see what her hunting weight will be. She's been eating on the glove at 57.5 oz. We will see.
Yeah you have to watch their feet the first few days, after that you start building trust. They can bite, but it's just kind of a nibble, they don't usually hurt you with the beak.
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing. Was curious how you fashioned the camera to your trap. I’ve plugged and play but cannot get it right. Was also wondering if you think mouse color makes a difference? Cheers!
Thanks Joseph! I use a GoPro clamp. I tighten that down on the corner of the trap and then used 2 heavier zip ties to make it real secure. My camera is a DJI Action 4, and they are compatible with the GoPro camera mounts. I think the color of mice matter with some birds, and some don't care. If I had the option, I would go with anything but white. Though, sometimes white is the only thing I can get at times.
George and Falconer here love your contact me and my wife both fly big girls 50 and 52 ounce. they have drawbacks, they can carry easier and farther but you gotta love them big toes
@ I haven’t either she ought to be a beast with that food drive. How many grams is that? My biggest red tail was 1200 g trap weight and hunted at 1120. Which isn’t a huge bird.
what time of the year can you not trap red tails? I was thinking of taking my exam in February once I finish some things, but I am guessing there is a grace period when you can't trap?
@FinsandTalons thank you for your reply. Take care of this beautiful animal and respect the nature. The World needs wild predators like hawks , falcon and eagles.
Are you aloud to keep her? I’m new so don’t mind me😊 do you need a license or something that’s crazy I’m in Northern AZ there’s so big ass birds here of all kinds!! Came from Seattle 23yrs ago up there it’s all about the eagles salmon rivers etc, but ya this was a cool video I’ll definitely be back
Yes, falconers are licensed through their state. We also keep records through a federal database with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. If you're really interested in it, check and see what falconry clubs are in your area and link up with them. Thanks for watching the videos!

Thank you! Have you linked up with your state falconry club yet?
Thank goodness Jeb is back. He adds so much to the channel!
I wasn't sure if I should keep Jeb around, but he's doing alright.😂
I’d release him back to the wild.

Haaa that's funny. Absolutely....I'm ready for it!
Beautiful bird. Definitely a big girl.
Thanks, she is a brute! I'm super excited!
Happy for you, she's huge! I hope she becomes a great falconry bird for you!
Thanks Jeff....I'm looking forward to it!
@@FinsandTalons I'll be watching for your videos!
She is beautiful! Love your channel. We are originally from OH and started falconry 4 years ago. Currently flying a Merlin but a RTH is my dream bird.

Congratulations and good luck!

Those are nice sized birds - that's heavier than the Red Tails I usually trap and hunt with. This girl hopped to the glove 4 times today at 58 oz 😳.
@ Monster. Hard to imagine her flying under 3 lbs. Everything’s gonna be on that bird’s menu! Congrats!
Holy smokes she’s a small eagle! 👍 I’m curious to see what her hunting weight will be. Look forward to the videos to come!

New to your channel. Looking forward to seeing your progress
Welcome aboard! I have a good feeling about this hawk.
This one is going to be a keeper!!!
I think so!
thats a biiiiiig female. Im flying a pretty small western rt this season and this is making me envious
I'm telling you..... she's like a small eagle! You're welcome to come trap in Ohio next year if you want to make the drive!
congrats brother
@@MushMaine Thank you sir! 🫡
I’m shocked the bird doesn’t give you the beak. It must be talons only. Good video

Wow what an awesome bird I hope she the one. Good luck..
I really hope so! I have a good feeling about her. Thanks Ken!
Christmas eve I trapped a female RTH at 1690 grams, empy crop. Shes a beast!
That is a tankkkkkk! Congrats!!!!
@FinsandTalons what's your email I'll send you some photos!
Nice Catch

@@FinsandTalons we rarely get rabbits down hereabout 10 to 1 so big toes are important for gray squirrels
Great looking female
Thanks Adam, I agree! I really like the different colorations all of the Red-Tails have.
@ yeah me too, I’ll have a red tail one day myself. I’ve got a male Harris hawk atm over here in the Uk . Great videos , look forward to the updates .
