As someone who binge watches educational videos when I'm interested in a topic, I've reflected while watching this video that watching something happen in real time is much easier to understand because you can understand in real time how long it takes--over watching videos that dump the info. thanks!
As a racing pigeon flyer I hate with a passion when your pals are near my yard, mostly the Cooper’s hawk, the redtails don’t really bother my birds except spook them from landing, but I do enjoy watching a fellow bird lover tame and train their bird. No greater feeling than seeing all your hard work come to fruition.
@@DanzaLoft Yes I know what you mean - two years ago I was free-ranging my chickens and a Cooper's Hawk killed my 8 lb rooster! I couldn't believe that little bird was able to take him down. And yes, it sure is nice to see the training come through and see the finished product. Good luck with the pigeons!
Lovely video. Nice that you are taking your time to show the gentle progress. So many years since I felt that sense of achievement as they start to jump! What a thrill!

Shes a cool bird! Redtails are so impressive. The bird's attitude to the falconer was one of the draws of falconry to me, its a unique relationship that you can't experience with anything else. Some of them do come to love you but it happens over time, and is more of a side effect to you being their hunting partner for years, like an added bonus if you put enough effort into it. I have seen captive rattlesnakes become as friendly and curious as a tame ball python, but its true that they're not out there looking for friends. She's got some nice squirrel snatchers on her, can't wait to see her in action!
@@rookbirdblues Yes to me, nothing touches falconry. It seems like the Harris' are much more social than the Red-Tails. Yes she definitely has some big shoes, I hope to put them to work on these big fox squirrels we have here in Ohio!
@@FinsandTalons I'll be getting my own Harris in the next six months! They're much more social, but some of them seem to love humans, and some have more of the redtails attitude... They're funny birds, I've worked with more of them than any other species and they're all completely different

Man I love training a fresh bird. Not trapping for me this year I intermewed my RT this year and have a second year Harris’ so working two one year old birds this year. Good luck this season
Seven days of looking for a juvie I can get my trap under with no luck yet. I'm the "Hag Master", they're all I can find!! Very discouraging to see the early days of the season go by, knowing it's only going to get more difficult as the season progresses.
You are welcome to come to Ohio and get a non-resident license and trapping permit. We can probably get you on a passage pretty quick. I know it's a haul over here.
So my exam comes up on 9/11/24 they set me up with an conservation officer close to my home so I don’t have to drive to Jackson, they seem excited an old guy like me wants to participate. So, if I pass exam/inspection etc I’d like to check in if I need help I like your calm approach and can learn from you. I already see the jesses I’ve made are probably not gonna stand up to the bateing off your bird was doing. Anyway there are 32 falconers in Mississippi I hope to be #33. Thanks
@@Gregory-en5kq Good luck on the exam - very exciting time! Yes the Red-Tails are pretty hard on equipment, I usually use kangaroo hide from Western Sporting, Mike's Falconry or Northwoods Falconry.
@@MushMaine To keep her talons sharp. Anytime I put her on a perch where her feet can make contact with the ground, I put either those mats down or a couple layers of carpet padding down. The dirt and rock will dull their talons quick. Sharp talons are important with rabbit hunting, but definitely important with squirrel hunting. You don't want the squirrels turning in the hawk's feet and biting the hawk.
