  • Today we join Steph, Avi and Nona - They make squirrel hunting look easy! We had a ton of fun, and couldn't feel our hands or faces by the end of the hunt! (20 degrees not including the wind chill that probably put it around 10 degrees). Avi hit her first squirrel nest - check it out! Thanks for watching!

Squirrels and Redtails, what a match made in heaven! Squirrelhawking is such a rush haha, I have to get a Harris for pest control work but the moment I can get a bird purely for hawking, it'll be a Redtail. Such an underrated quarry and bird

@@FinsandTalonsI am! We have a ton of invasive grey squirrels who have almost completely wiped out our native reds, so squirrel hunting in general is big here, but lots of people in falconry are worried about bites. Our native common buzzards don't really hunt squirrels that much so Redtails are the perfect match.

@@rookbirdblues Do many fly Finnish Goshawks on squirrels or any other big Gos?

@@FinsandTalonsOne of my mentors flies an Albidus gos on squirrels and catches absolutely loads of them, but goshawks on squirrel isn't really very big in the wider community. He thinks its going to blow up soon because he's had so much success, but I haven't seen anyone else doing it yet. But squirrel populations are going up and rabbit/hare is going down so fur goshawkers will probably be switching to squirrel soon!

@rookbirdblues I could definitely see that coming. And when you have a group watching the chase and the squirrel is jumping tree to tree, people start laughing and carrying on, it is soooo fun!

I was squirrel hawking the other day, when my red-tail make a b-line to a tree that was 50 feet away. I heard the constant sound of bells, which I knew she had caught something. I ran up to where she was hoping she had caught a fox squirrel. Instead she had nailed a great horned owl and they were both splayed out on their backs with their talons interlocking. I had to pry the owl's talons off of my birds feet and then toss a chick to the side to have my bird release the owl.

I reallllly wanted to but I didn't want to bump the bird by being too close, so we stayed back while Steph got her down. It was nothing for her to fly around with a little gray squirrel lol.
