Buying The Farm
Приєднався 22 січ 2022
Over the years, I found that I had the desire to embark on an adult rural project... I wanted to purchase some land just outside my city where I could escape and enjoy nature, and even some projects. Close enough to make logistics realistic, but far enough away for it to be rural. By accident I found the perfect property in the fall of 2021, though its condition is anything but perfect! Yeah, this is the understatement of the century.
Join me on this channel as I work to make improvements to the land, its natural elements, and of course, its buildings!
This is going to be a journey, and I'm looking forward to the input of anyone who has knowledge about land management, property rehabilitation, barn/farm restoration, and so much more. If this is a subject that you find enjoyable, please LIKE, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE. I'm hoping to gain a base of viewers with a range of backgrounds and skillsets, who don't mind contributing their wisdom to this project.

🌱🍅🌿 Building a SECOND seed starting rack, and planting hundreds of seeds for 2024!! 🌿🍅🌱
WELL Everyone, it's that time of year again.... time to fight through the depths of spring (with its snow and wind and ice and rain) by looking forward to the planting season and upcoming summer!! That means - SEED STARTING TIME!!
That's right - it's late February and time to expand my seed-starting setup to accommodate more trays and transplants of all the wonderful plants that I'm going to be sowing at the farm (and in my home garden) this upcoming summer.
This video is almost a continuation of my original Seed Starting Station build from last year. I used all the same parts and pieces, and constructed an identical clone of my rack from last year. I did this at a pretty pivotal time - just days before my first ever UA-cam LIVE EVENT, where I planted nearly a half dozen trays of seeds and had a pretty fun Q&A along the way. This video shows some footage from that event.
Fast forward about 7 weeks and the plants are going NUTS - they are growing and strong and healthy. Much like last year, I have some plants growing in phases, with established plants almost 10" tall, and new plants just sprouting. By the time June 1 hits, the plants will be awesome and ready for their new farm home.
BUT, there's a ton of stuff to do between now and then, like getting the farm field situated for planting. That is going to be a real struggle, I fear... as it has been since I purchased the farm. If only I could find a large disc plow to help along with the process. Oh well, so much more to come. STAY TUNED!!
Don't forget, I have setup an email address for this channel - buyingthefarmny@gmail.com. If anyone would like to send a note, discuss a particular topic, share your stories, or to contact me for any other reason, please feel free!
Thanks for stopping by, and we'll see you on the next video!!

Hello all! Welcome back to the farm Aside from one major snow storm, March has been a beautiful month with temperatures between 40-65. On one of those warm sunny days, I went outside and began the redesign of my vegetable garden area behind my house. You may recall that I mentioned my desire to move my gardening efforts to raised beds at my house. I found some really highly-rated galvanized rai...

Hi there, Folks! Thanks for coming back! Throughout my videos this winter, there has been something very obviously missing... SNOW. You will never see me complain about that though - Hahaha. Well, as December slid into January and into February, there has still been no snow (except for the overnight dusting, here and there). Well, that all changed one evening at the very end of February when we...

Hey there everyone! Thanks for coming back to the farm! We're nearly complete with our recap of fall 2023 projects and updates. One more video to go. This one is a special video, in that a RADICAL transformation has been made at the farm. Hey there folks, and welcome back! This has been a funny winter so far - there simply hasn't been much snow. A dusting here or there, and that's about it. Currently, in mid-February, we are bracing for the rough Feb/Mar winter storms - those are always wildcards. Will they happen this year though?? Maybe, maybe not! I'm hoping for NOT! Weather aside, thoughts of the farm and the springtime task...

Hello everyone - welcome back! We're now well into 2024, but still taking a look back as we wrap up the last of the videos for the late-fall 2023 projects and happenings! This video is both good and bad: It is good because it allowed me to cross off a buck-list item by getting a brush hog and getting it hooked up to a tractor that could adequately power it... but it is also bad because once hoo...

Hey Everyone! WELCOME BACK to the farm! Happy Winter ❄️☃️ Late December here in Central New York usually means LOTS of snow. However, this year we have had a very mild December, largely snow-free (thank goodness). So, while I still head to the farm weekly to check on things, not much new work is taking place at the moment. That means this is a GREAT time to look back a few months on some summer...

Hello everyone - WELCOME BACK to the farm, after a far-too-long delay! Well, first let me explain why there has been such a delay in video posts. Bulldozer re-assembly, and enjoying some of the fall foliage highlights of our area!
Wow , so cool this video is . I am looking at a D6-9u and wasn't sure if I could figure it out or not . This video was very helpful and the pdf book was a treasure . Thank you very , very much ,
My pleasure - I hope you have lots of fun with it if you find one for sale! Make sure it's in good condition though - repairs on this old stuff is HARD unless you're a old-school diesel mechanic. :-)
I think I will purchase one of these for a model and then duplicate it.
Yeah, definitely - the only unique thing is the plastic honey frames - those can't be duplicated. You'd have to find them online somewhere. What you're considering is exactly what I considered until I saw the price of the plastic frames - it was cheaper just to buy the whole kit!
what happened to buying the farm videos. hope all is well
LOTS MORE ARE COMING.... it has been an insane year of travel - I'm traveling place to place, back to back, which makes it hard to compile videos. TONS of footage from the year... standby! :-)
what part of ny are you in?
Hey there! Right in Central New York.
Nice video ❤
Thank you for watching - many more to come!!
If you can afford a bulldozer that big, you’re not hurting for funds
Meaning....?? This is a hobby and recreational property for me - there's no money coming out of it. Therefore it cannot be a money-pit. And the bulldozer was 10k, and I sold it for 10k.... so I got 100% of the money back. A LOT cheaper than renting something that big for an entire season.
What part of NY state are you in? Im from the city bronx, and Rockland county.😊
Hey! I'm in Central New York - several hours North of you :-)
If you have ever painted model cars or airplanes, you can get airbrush guiding tape Like even frogtape or 3M tape that gives you Clean crisp lines fire the honeycomb design On the sides of your hive, all and all cool Design on the beehive, I did notice some Other beekeepers used dark brown for there Outlines on there hives.
Oh - very good tips! Thank you for providing them. I actually own an airbrush and was considering using it on an upcoming hive. :-)
Skid steer and mulcher would have been much better. That said the bulldozer looks like it's a lot more fun.
Hahahaha - the bulldozer was definitely fun. Unfortunately, in my area, nobody had mulching service with their skid steer. The closest was about 3 hours away and the price was outrageous. Further, since most of the property was trees, I needed to actually get the roots out of the way, and not just mulch at the surface level. So it ended up working in my favor using the bulldozer.
weard bro very old🦺
Hadn't been used for more than 20 years. It was built in the early 1900's.
Get this fixed? If so, what was the solution?
Yeah - It sat in the shop for MONTHS waiting for the backordered part. A viewer from Texas called a local tractor shop and they had an input shaft in stock - ONE SINGLE SHAFT. So he gave me the contact info and I called and ordered it and they shipped it to NY. It was like $600. The local shop installed it and I was back in action!
Hope you are doing well. Was thinking about you a d your farm today while mowing my lawn
Hey there! YES - doing well. SUCH A BUSY SUMMER. I have tons of video and episodes coming, just limited time to put them together at the moment. Hang in there - lots to come. :-)
Black wooden fence would look good on that highway front, difffently need to put up fence between highway and barrn before things start walking off ,you got a nice farm good luck with it
Actually it is just a 2-lane country road, not a highway. I'm considering some decorative fence options but have to get a bit more of the property situated first. :-)
Looking good
Super slow progress, but any progress is good progress!!
That's what your bushhog for cleaning off land bridge you ,bushhog first and then back drag your bucket with laying at bucket to level it
The problem is that a lot of what is on the landbridge right now are stumps - 8"-10" in diameter - from the trees that took over the land bridge. I got them all cut down, but the stumps remain. The plan is to use the big loader-backhoe to get those out of the way and then the whole thing can be leveled flat and smooth.
You can use the bucket to get you unstuck, that tractor should be 4 wheel drive
Sadly, it's not - only 2 wheel drive. I spent about 20 min trying to use the bucket and all it ended up doing was digging down into the ground. There was just too much mud up under the tractor as well as the brush hog.
Always hook bought lift points first it will be a lot Easyer and if you hook up one then get in tractor and move forward or backwards to line it up,you'll get the hang of it set it down level when you unload and it will be Easyer to hook up,
You say your industrial tractor, you actually bought a backhoe, but you didn't go wrong you need to buy backhoe arm and bucket you'll be set up dig anything thing you want, like a pond
Yeah - the guy I bought it from said that there is a backhoe attachment that goes to this tractor, but I haven't been able to find one anywhere. I did end up buying a loader/backhoe as a separate piece of equipment though. That said, someday I'd love to find the arm that goes to this unit.
Get you a good 10ft disc and y'all be in business
You need a lot bigger plow if you want to work the field, yeah when plow put you tires in the low spot of the lost row, your roed will be equal distance away from each other
Tree cutting is a necessary danger on a farm. There will always be trees needing to be cut down. It’s nice you have someone who can show you the correct way.
YES - I've learned a lot from Steve. I have a couple annoying trees to take down (they're in tricky spots between buildings) and then most of the clearing will be DONE - then it's on to rebuilding!
Forestry mulcher on a skid steer would’ve been better. And if cost was too much to buy hiring a contractor to do it might’ve been better. Dozers cause too much compaction
Yeah I spent about 3 months looking for someone to hire. Unfortunately around my area there are no services that provide this type of mulching. The closest one was just over 3 hours away and the price was outrageous. I bought and operated the dozer for a full season for less than what the mulching service would have cost. It wasn't ideal, but it did get all the roots up, which a mulcher wouldn't have done - so it was a win/win!
Ok, time for more!!
Hahaha - they're on the way! It has been a CRAZY summer. I have tons of video, just no time to compile the episodes yet. They are coming - lots to release very soon!!
That dirt at the beginning is beautiful!
Yeah - there's a lot of beauty on this property if you can look past the general state of things. Hahaha. baby-steps!
Prioritize Water then Access then Structures. You got this!
Indeed - this is great advice!!
wondering how the summer went
Lots of videos are coming!! It has been an INSANE summer - so busy. I have tons of video and lots of episodes coming really soon! :-)
A skid Steer attachment (Mulcher).. and if you buy that.. it will be very easy to make the ground as flat as it can be.. since the mulcher will flatten all the tree trunks and roots sticking out.. just be aware of barb wires on the porperty..as it can trangle into the mulcher.... for that simply buy a working but used metal detector.. thats easy to use and repair.
My friend mi humble advice for you is that if you are not going to live in this farm, you are wasting time and money number one a farm requires maintenance for 365 days if you clean this land next year will be in same condition
Eh, this is a hobby property - nothing more. This is all about learning - this will never be a commercial farm. I do hope to farm the land a bit, but I consider it more of a large garden project than an income-producing farm. I DO have a very long-term plan for the property and it doesn't involve building a house or making it a commercial farm.
Can u do rentals on some of the equipment you may need for short term use. Just asking because the area that I visited in FL had ALL different equipment for rent. I was astounded. Stay blessed.
I guess the potential is there for rentals, but the equipment I buy isn't anywhere near new, and I'm in constant fear of VERY costly breakdowns. I'm not a mechanic, so I'm always running a fine line between things operating properly and NOT operating properly. I feel that renting stuff out runs the risk of horrible liability with how people would use (or misuse) the equipment.
I thought you were an hour or two south of Syracuse until you said Madison. I grew up in Lafayette. Now I'm north of Syracuse.
Oh, very cool! Yeah I'm definitely closer to Madison than Syracuse. That said, I'm always in Syracuse at the airport - I travel a LOT for work - I can do that drive in my sleep. Hahaha
A Skid Steer with multiple attachments like a brush thrasher, brush hog, bucket, etc. When you're done with it, sell it and get goats for brush maintenance. The bucket attachment will help spreading graven after you level the ground.
❤
THANKS for watching!! :-)
Don't forget to get a rock rake and a disk harrow for spring Deals can often be found BEFORE spring
So far I have a York Rake, 2 back blades, an 8 foot disc harrow, and a brush hog. I'm always on the lookout for winter deals!! :-)
A shipping container base would make a good bridge for you. If you paint the underside with bitumen it will last long time.
Consider renting a track skidsteer with brush grapple, if you could find a helper/oprerator for a couple days you will be amazed on what you could get done, and if your allowed to burn at same time it would go very fast
Sounds like you need a chipper to mulch all the wood & felled trees… that would help regenerate your soil, & can be used to create path… good luck😊
I actually bought a chipper that can handle up to 3" branches and it was a slow and messy process. Then I rented a bigger one and it was even worse. At this point chipping is a last-resort for me - I just haven't had any good experiences with it.
I have a small 50 acre farm. I call tractor time diesel therapy. I put on a book and life is good. Congratulations
This sounds WONDERFUL!!! I'd agree 100%, as long as everything is working properly. I always fear the worst with the equipment I buy - I'm not a mechanic, soooo..... it's equally therapeutic AND stressful. Hahaha.
The owner stated in the video he intends to sell, as the surrounding homes would indicate.
Thanks for watching!
Thx
You bet - thanks for watching. Lots more to come!
Thx
Glad you enjoyed it!
Keep a close eye on the hydraulics. Moving manure causes pitting and leaks.
Thank you for that. As it turns out, I just discovered a ton of water in my hydraulic oil (it's milky). I randomly lost brakes and steering 2 weeks ago. Not only is the level low, but it's also milky. I'm going to drain and replace, and they try to figure out where there might be a leak. Everything looks dry and as it should be.
Hey mister where have you been? You doing OK?
Hey Lonnie!! YES - all is well - SUPER busy this summer. I've been traveling a ton, and taking lots of videos - lots of stuff getting released soon. Just gotta get over the hump, as they say! How about you??
@BuyingTheFarm ahhhh I'm still alive. Have had several issues come up. Don't agree with 1/2 the BS I'm being told. But so far i think I'm done with the bulk of all appointments until next spring for all the yearly check ups and crap that they'll want to do then. Glad things are good with you. 👍👍🫶🏼
You are over dramatic
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane! We had an early fifties D6, an old army surplus dozer when I was a kid. My job every morning was to start that old beast! My dad woke me up at 4am and said get your ass out there and fire off! Your dozer is the deluxe model! Our pony motor didn’t have electric start, it had an old Wisconsin Robin motor that had a pull start with a rope! Let me tell you, I learned how to swear just trying to get that little motor going! 🤬🤣🤣🤣 and then it would stall out when the main engine was cold! What a beast it was but if it wasn’t idling nicely by the time dad came out with his coffee, there was hell to pay! It taught me a great deal and later when I became a professional operator I would look back and realize just how good we have it now what with air conditioning and air ride seats and ergonomic controls! I had forgotten how many different controls there were! Great video and thanks again! 🇺🇸💪👊
Hahahaha thank you so much for leaving a comment!! This was an awesome story. The model I had still had the pull-start option for the pony motor. I never had the guts to spin a rope around it and try it. I battled with that pony motor... so once I got it working reasonably well, I made use of it!! I can't imagine having to do it every day, or in the cold, or in the dark, OR WITH A PULL CORD!!! Loll. That sounds horrible. I was always excited to use that dozer, but I always had to psych myself up to start the process - I never knew what would work, what wouldn't, what would start, what wouldn't (come to think of it, that's a pretty accurate story for all the equipment I currently have) Hahahaha. I'm glad my video could bring you some enjoyment!!
@@BuyingTheFarm thank you! Yeah I learned a lot about making small engines more dependable, keeping the fuel fresh and cleaning the air filter and plugs and such. Makes you appreciate those Hondas now, just one pull and vroom she’s running like a top! Best to you and yours!
❤ from Norway
HELLO NORWAY!!! Please come along for the ride and enjoy all my videos - lots more coming soon!
I load my backhoe all the time on a trailer even taller than yours without ramps it’s a backhoe use the bucket to lift yourself up
I can definitely do that with the larger backhoe I have, but the geometry of this little one is odd - as soon as I get the front tires up, the frame of the backhoe hits the ground and prevents the back tires from moving it forward. I've tried a few different ways to get it up there, and it just doesn't work well with that big equipment trailer.
Thank you for the montage. We lived in Webster NY for 8 years and loved it. Spring and Summer our favorites.
