  • Hello everyone!
Welcome back to the farm. Just a small bunch of weeks left until the official start of Spring, and I'm tackling a FUN project in this episode in preparation! I've been looking forward to this project ever since learning about the existence of Autoflow Beehives back in the early fall of last year (thanks Megan!!). :-)
Autoflow Beehives are unique in that you don't need to remove any component of the hive to harvest the honey. Honey extraction is accomplished through a two part plastic honeycomb mechanism. When a key tool is inserted and turned, the honeycomb splits apart and releases the honey down through the honey frame (called a Flow Frame) and out of the frame through a detachable tube. You can collect the honey directly into jars or a bucket or any other sort of container. It really is a phenomenal advance for the field of beekeeping, especially for those people who really only have an interest in the honey and not the intensely laborious and messy process of extraction.
There is a major brand, and inventors, of Autoflow Beehives called FlowHive. And while this brand has exceptional reviews and some compelling features, those hives are about 3 times the price of the generic brand I purchased of Amazon. Due to reasons I'll elaborate upon in the video, I just didn't want to commit that much money to something I've never really done before. The hive I selected comes quite highly reviewed though, and is very economical.
Because there aren't really many full start-to-finish builds of the Golden Palace Autoflow Beehive, I decided to make this video a little longer and cover almost every step in the construction process, all the way through decorating the hive! Overall it was a very enjoyable process that spanned about 7 hours over a little more than 2 weeks.
I hope you enjoy the video. If you have an Autoflow Beehive, or if you keep bees, or even if you are interested in the possibility of beekeeping for the benefits of the honey produced in the process, PLEASE leave me a comment. I'd love to hear from you!
Don't forget, I have setup an email address for this channel - buyingthefarmny@gmail.com. If anyone would like to send a note, discuss a particular topic, share your stories, or to contact me for any other reason, please feel free!
Thanks for stopping by, and we'll see you on the next video!!

If you have ever painted model cars or airplanes, you can get airbrush guiding tape
Like even frogtape or 3M tape that gives you
Clean crisp lines fire the honeycomb design
On the sides of your hive, all and all cool
Design on the beehive, I did notice some
Other beekeepers used dark brown for there
    Outlines on there gives.

Great video. Most other videos I’ve seen just fast forward through the process and don’t show or discuss any of the mistakes that will undoubtedly happen. And your finished art project looked super cool. Great job and thank you for sharing.

Hey Ben! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I'm always happy to show mistakes - it's part of the learning process, and EVERYTHING about me buying this farm has been a learning process. Hahaha. I have another video coming out next week showing my build of two more hives for the coming year! Stay tuned. :-)

Kool to see that you made those few little mistakes. I probably would of made more just for the fact things are such a mess right now.
Been dealing with people that can't just comprehend the simplest things in life.
On a personal note, not sure I'd of went with the yellow. I'd think it'd stand out more for bears and other varmints that like honey as much as us humans.
Question for you. How did you get the paint outta your hair, looked like you done a great job on getting both grey and black mixed in all over. 🤪🤪🤪
    BTW awesome video. 🚜🚜🚜

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, ohhhh Lonnie! ;-) Yeah lots of grey and black mixed all around up there! And if it weren't for my many mistakes on ALL my projects, I wouldn't learn anything. My choice for the yellow was equal parts concern for others (making sure people can see it from far away if anyone wanders by that area) as well as the de-facto bumblebee theme. The next one I build will likely be a little more creative versus stereotypical. Who knows - maybe all those critters will be scared away from it because it's so bright!!

@@BuyingTheFarm I do know that with the last dealings I had with honey bee's was back around 1990 or so. Ended up getting stung while picking apples at my grandparents place. (I'm highly allergic to them). Beautiful apple trees along with the apples themselves. Pruned the heck outta those trees over a 3 yr span. Ended up with some of the best apples ever. People in the area just wasn't interested in them. And several withered away. They were 1/2 again as big as a dinner plate.

WOW - those are some big apples! The neighbors across the street from my farm have about 20 apple trees, and the guy's father used to be a beekeeper as a profession. He always mentioned he should get a hive or two, and was pretty excited when I said I was installing some!

@@BuyingTheFarm I'm shocked my grandfather didn't take it up after retiring from farming, then again they say farmers don't retire they just slow down.
His last 3 yrs he wasn't allowed outta the house unless someone went with him.
I know they had Johnathan, macintosh, granny Smith. But there was 1 more and I can't for the life of me remember what it was.
Besides fertilizer spikes we sprayed once or twice. Had plenty to rain to feed them. Would be interesting to know if those trees are still alive.
They were on the north side of the 50' chicken house. Yeah they had chickens for a long time. Grandma had a egg route at one time.
Plus they'd freeze probably 200 chickens a year for several yrs.
That's not counting all the pork and beef they'd put in the deep freeze. At one time they ran 3 huge deep freezers plus one that was about 1/2 the size of them, and it held the corn, strawberries, and other odd ball stuff.
But one thing I never seen grandma use was blueberries. 🤔🤔🤔🤔
One thing I was deprived of while growing up.

Ei! BOA SORTE. :-)

Great job explaining the 'knock off' Flow Hive. I'll be purchasing about 10 hives in a few months. I'm still trying to decide which supplier to go with. I tried to find a follow up / Harvest video you might have done to see what your thoughts are after a season. Did you make a follow up video? Thanks for all your work putting that hive together.

Hey Dennis!! No, aside from numerous check-ins, and bringing them homemade nectar each week, I harvested NOTHiNG because the overall honey production was low (only about half the honey frames were filled). So at the end of summer, I made the decision to leave all the honey for the bees over the winter. I bought 2 more hives… another auto-flow as well as a conventional multi-box setup. I’m going to be posting a video in a few weeks about the build process… but in general they say that the first year you shouldn’t harvest anything. Let me know how your progress is!! :-)
