  • Hello everyone, and welcome back to the farm!
2024 has arrived, but we still continue to look back to the summer and fall of 2023 to catch up on some of the late-season work that was done at the farm. SO MUCH work was done in such a short period of time, the video content is still overflowing. Anyway, onward to the topic of this video.
Has anyone ever been stuck in a giant pricker bush, and held captive to the point that they were immobilized for minutes? No? Well, it sucks - it's no fun. This is what happened to me in August, as I was trying to navigate the overgrowth between my tractor path and my land bridge. I was merely trying to get to the back acreage of my property, and I found myself STUCK in a grove of pricker bushes. After a LOT of scratches and torn clothing, I finally freed myself and ran back to the barn to get my tractor. It was that moment that I said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! I put off the task for far too long, so I drove the tractor to the end of my tractor path, dropped the bucket, and started scraping a path through the brush and bushes out to the tractor path.
This was not fast work, but pass-by-pass, I found that I was creating a legitimate roadway through the thicket out onto the land bridge! Once I finally made a path to the land bridge, I didn't stop there - I kept going, scraping the ground all the way out to the drainage ditches. After a few days of work (maybe a grand total of 8 hours of effort), I had a fully cleared path from my tractor path out onto the land bridge, and clear across to the back of my property.
Don't get me wrong, I had to rely heavily on my Stihl FS-56C weed whacker Echo CS-490 chainsaw toward the end... but my little TYM compact tractor worked like a charm to scrape off all the vegetation on the new path, move logs and limbs and branches, and end up with a nice path around 8 feet to 10 feet wide, which wasn't there before! Sure, I had to move some dirt around with the loader bucket on my TYM to level things off a bit, but it worked like a charm and I ended up with a roadway!
The project isn't over though - come spring, I need to bring my new giant backhoe back to the land bridge to clear the sides so that I have a true roadway that I can navigate with a tractor, UTV, or other farm vehicle!
Anyway, STAY TUNED - the late fall projects continue. A few more to go, and then we will dive head-first into some of the things taking place over this winter! More to come!
Don't forget, I have setup an email address for this channel - buyingthefarmny@gmail.com. If anyone would like to send a note, discuss a particular topic, share your stories, or to contact me for any other reason, please feel free!
Thanks for stopping by, and we'll see you on the next video!!

Awesome video. Can't wait to see what you have planned.
I'm currently discussed with owning where I live.
For yrs now people around me totally ignore the fact that I own this place and they think they can do whatever they want on what little land I own. 🤔
Hope things are going good for you.
O' Mack is doing better. But the other day I trimmed his toe nails. After that he proceeded to lung at me a few times barking louder than he ever has. He kept that up for a good 15-20 mins. I'm shocked the neighbors didn't call the police over it. Then to top it all off he ignored me for the next few hours even tho I did give him treats after I was done with the trimming.
You'd never guess where he's currently sacked out right now. (If you guessed my lap you'd be correct). Had to go to the store today and was shocked he was sitting on the arm rest of the chair when I returned home. Gotta give him a bath later. That should be a fun experience without Pugsley being here. Even last night was kinda funny. Guess he was in a mood to play. He started out by putting his front paws on my left leg with his hind paws on the chair arm. Then he flops down and rolls over on his back. I'm like OK so you want a chest rub. That lead into a wrestling match on seeing who could out last the torture of the other. He hasn't showed any interest in any of the toys since Pugsley passed, before that they'd fight over the toys.

Neighbors can either be good or bad, Lonnie. I'm blessed with good neighbors, though I do sometimes find signs of human activity in places where there shouldn't be any (other than myself). Things are going well though, thanks. Lots of travel and just trudging through the long cold winter. I have a half dozen videos scheduled to drop every couple weeks or so, and that should get us past the poor weather and back outside where things can happen again. Take care of the pup - sounds like he's starting to adjust ok!

I must say that the field is turning out great now with that grass all over it, and I dont doubt for a second that you will fix the landbridge, a suggestion though, instead of making a new ditch with a pipe, just dig out the flowing one a bit more and put the pipe there, its the path of least resistence and the water already flows there, which means the grade is already done for you and most of the digging as well :)

Danne, ordinarily that would be a perfect suggestion. However in this case, the ditch they dug is not in the correct location. Water backs up and eventually makes it to that drainage ditch. If you look at a satellite photo of the area, there is actually a stream that feeds the pond (it really isn't even a pond, it's a stream that constantly overflows into a low area on the property, making it a pond). So what I plan on doing is creating a ditch at the natural location of the stream, which happens to be about midway across the land bridge. That way, as you said, the water already flows there and is the lowest point of the area. Once done, it should be great and drain nicely! Keep watching for updates. :-)

Bring tools: Bring a saw, machete, and other tools needed to cut tree branches and clear obstacles.

Yeah - I have a machete I normally always have with me... and the one time I needed it I didn't have it!

A brush hog would be a great help keeping the land bridge clear.

YES - you're absolutely right, and I have one now. The problem is the land bridge is currently dish shaped (higher on the sides, lower in the middle... so I have to clear the sides a bit to make it flatter and more level. At that point, it should be fairly easy to maintain! :-)
