Hi, my name is Jim Ingram. Thank you for checking out my channel.
My whisky journey, some might say, started when I was in my late teens. Here, in the UK & Ireland, it is legal to drink alcohol from the age of 18. During these formative years, I learned that I had a bit of a taste for bourbon. Jack Daniels and Jim Beam especially.
This enjoyment for grain spirit hung around in the background and there was always a bottle in the cabinet.
Skip forward 25 years, during which time my interest for Irish and Scotch whiskies grew, and The Whiskey Novice was officially born out of a refreshed love for the "water of life."
I love everything "whiskey" and, although I'm learning all the time...while I always have something new to learn about this spirit, I will always consider myself a novice. This channel sees me progress through my whisky journey reviewing bottles as I go and sharing my thoughts.
Thank you for making time to join me.

Hinch Warehouse 3 Peated Malt review #260 with The Whiskey Novice
Anyone who watches my reviews regularly, will know that I tend to lean more towards Scotch whisky than any other. There's a reason for that. I prefer Scotch whisky! Irish whiskey has been around a long, long time but...it practically disappeared in the 20th Century. Although it is rebuilding, it'll take time before it re-establishes itself on the world market (outside of your Midleton and Bushmills products obviously!) What might seem like a small gesture from Hinch distillery, may go a long, long way towards cementing it's future as one of the brands to watch in that new establishment! Here're my thoughts on that "small" gesture!

As titles go...Phil & Simon Thompson know how to fill one!! This is becoming their thing a bit, I'd suggest! Where Scotch whisky is concerned...Highland Park (whisky from Orkney) are one that, as I see it, we all visit but, don't dwell in. True to say that, they've released a lot of expressions over the years. With that in mind, I feel we grew a bit, tired or just, bored of what they were putting out! So...in the weird and wonderful world of whiskey...it would appear that nothing is off limits these days! In a bid to be different...producers are using all sorts of casks, which have previously contained all sorts of liquids, to mature and finish their whiskies. It would also appear...that a lot of those liquids were not commonly stored in barrels. Orange liqueur is one such liquid. "So, what ...

Wild Turkey Rare Breed review #231 with The Whiskey Novice
Thanks Jim. I went down to Hinch to get a bottle of the 22 year old Madeira. Tried the peated 3 year old down there and came home with a bottle of it too. If this is how Hinch intend to go on, there will be a well worn track down to their door from home. More power to their collective elbows
Great info Jim. Happy 2025
It is very good for the price i only wish i got 2 bottles instead of 1 of each . You all ways know is good when you pour a good size pour in your videos. Great review
Thanks for reviewing Jim. Despite a possible interesting dram I doubt this will find it's way to Peathead HQ in any form, just due to logistical difficulties... but who knows in the future with another expression. Slàinte mhath
What a review! I like various HINCH whiskies a lot. Yes, I know, that they are sourced, but most of them are of high quality for a very friendly price. Good to know, that HINCH own juice is spectacular. I hope someday news HINCH whiskies will be available in my market.
This is VERY good news, Jimbo! Well done, Hinch. Onwards and upwards!
Great to see Hinch's own distillate getting such high praise early on. Future is looking bright for them based on this review 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
Good to hear your thoughts on this one Jim. Echoing the thoughts of many on the flavour for being so young, it’s excellent. We can all agree it’s great whiskey for the money! 🥃 cheers
I am a great believer in completely ignoring anybodies advice who is on a Whiskey journey because an awful lot of B******* is spoken about every whiskey, it is such a subjective topic, my advice is ( and I am not a natural advice giver ) buy a bottle, try it, if you like it good for you. I am a fan of this particular Whiskey but when I hear phrases like " floral notes " and "thin finish " being tossed about it send me to sleep.
I always think of this as a value, but you can get better whisky (at a younger age statement) for the same or less, as you've demonstrated. Cheers!
Sounds like an interesting little gem of a bottle, Jim. Maybe I'd expected something like Torabhaig Allt Gleann for the IYLTTTT due to it also being purely bourbon matured, instead of the Ardnahoe Infinite Loch, which I can see also has some Oloroso casks involved. Young Peated Bourbon matured Lovely Checks all the boxes in my book 😉😎 But maybe you're not so much a fan of the Torabhaig Allt Gleann? Cheers buddy, thanks for the review - quite interesting, I must say, even if that Hinch release is not possible for me to get to try 🥃
@@bennyfriis601 cheers my friend. It's my intention to, this year, review a lot of the newer distilleries with, Torabhaig being one of them. My thoughts will then be known 😉
@WhiskeyNovice Good stuff, mate! I promise, I'll try to stay patient for a while then 😎
Thanks for keeping us informed on this new distillery. There are so many new ones in both Ireland and Scotland that we can't try everything... but we try. This sounds like Hinch should be on my radar for when they are releasing in mass. I was able to get a couple bottles of the Harris release and I'm enjoying it. I visited there several years ago and have been waiting for them to release. To their credit they waited until they thought it was really ready. I agree that value is a big consideration with these releases. I know it is a challenge to manage their cash flow, but so of the distilleries are excluding me for sure with their prices. Cheers, buddy.
@@budj13 cheers Bud. It's my hope this year, to look at some of the newer distilleries and their releases. As you say, so many have come about in previous years. I won't pay stupid prices for inaugural releases but, the affordable ones, yeah, this year. Thanks my friend.
Cheers Jim and all the best for 2025. Looking forward to more of your straight shooting reviews. Based on your review of the Shortcross Peated Single Malt 7 yo matured in Cognac & Orange Liqueur Casks, I managed to get a bottle delivered to me in Poland. It's a great whisky I was not disappointed. Keep it up
@@EuanMacAra cheers buddy, and to you. That's brilliant news Euan. Glad to hear Shortcross are making their way into the wider world.
Alas, neither is available in the states.. Cheers Jim!
Found this years ago and fell in love immediately especially since it was the price of 12's. Been through 5 bottles and have another 2 put away. So sad that the rebranding that violated Balblair and Old Pulteney years ago is now coming to Speyburn but to an even more extreme level. Wondering when they will come for my beloved anCnoc ?
Love the review.
For me, the Kilchoman Sanaig is a closer flavour profile to the Ledaig 18, albeit a little less intense. You get the sweet peat of the Ledaig, (like the Ugi), but with the addition of the farmyard notes. The first time I tried the Ledaig 18, the farmyard note immediately reminded me of Kilchoman. For me, the Ugi is considerably sweeter than the Ledaig 18, whereas the Sanaig comes closer in its sweet / peat balance. All excellent whiskies! 🥃🙂
Great review. I've recently got the 1770 original and the peated. I'm really enjoying both. I'm looking forward to trying the cask strength, and this islay cask sounds amazing.
Have thoroughly enjoyed your videos this year Jim 👍🥃. I hope you and yours had a lovely Christmas and here's wishing you a healthy, peaceful and whisky banging 2025. Slàinte mhath my friend 😃.

😀.... I can tell you liked this one Jim. 2025 will see me reducing bottle purchases but seeing better quality and bang for buck dramming. This one will be on my short-list based on your review my friend 👍.
I have had 2 of these Bottles so far. The music in the background matches this scotch perfectly
Great review; very well articulated - I drank along with this and I think you nailed how the smokiness works in this dram.
Thanks for the review Jim! I’m a fan of this one and have had quite a few bottles…..I will say that there is quite a flavor and color difference from batch to batch. For me, I have found that the lighter color batches are better and much more complete.
Fucking Christmas in a glass my bottle is. Glad I had some yesterday
currently drinking the 1770 peated and loving it so would like to taste this.
Beautiful, well made whisky for sure. Let's see if they'll increase the ages as they go or keep it at 5 which seem to work. Cheers Jim!
Nice one Jim. I tried this one at the distillery (which is an absolutely magical place!) with the 10, 18 and a few cask finishes and unanimously the 15 won! It's a good whisky but I can also see why you're not blown away by it. Cheers!
It is great to get your thoughts on this one. I do have several Glenallachie in the cabinet and think Billy has made the most of the legacy stock. I'm just not able to explore everything that is going on and I tend to pass on the young ones and the early releases. I hope to enjoy a bit older expression in a few years. Cheers.
My main complaint with the 15 is the use of way too active oak. The tannins are just too aggressive
Merry Christmas Jim! That is my sentiment on the Speyburn 15 as well. It reminds me of the Glen Scotia 15 but not one I will replace.
Flies under the radar a bit but generally good value and tasty. I have tried their first two coastal range finishes which are pretty damn good. Miss their 17 year old but have a couple in my stash 😅
I love this one and the 18, always in my cabinet. Merry Christmas and cheers to you!
Old Pultney is one of the best brands of whiskey in the world for the money, they’re underrated.
Interesting. I heard so many good things, I appreciated the insight into the finish. Cheers!
Too bad it's not available in Sweden. The 18 is for a great price (for an 18 year old). Funny you should talk about the finish, because I've had the same reaction to the 18 year old. It has a wonderful nose, deep rich sweet sherry, clean (no sulfur), the arrival and development is a continuation of that wonderful nose. But the finish is just a tad off, it has kept me from stocking up on that bottle. I'd rather have a whisky with an off note on the nose than the palate and finish that's for sure (as off notes go I mean. Obviously I can do without them all together).
Need to get my hands on more Glasgow 1770!!
I had it at my local whisky fair recently, and I really enjoyed it. The 18 was better, but the increase in price between the 15 and 18 is substantial.
Finished my 15 recently. I always enjoyed it, but it had no real hooks. So it lasted on the shelf a good while, not often reaching for it. But when I did, tasty! And I think its standing really elevated by the time I reached the end. Was a strange one. Not sure I'd replace, but I want ro try the 18 or more OP (with an ok ABV) next.
@@agrainofmalt cheers.
Had the 18 and it's great, and at a great price. Still haven't tried the 15 as it's not available in Sweden, and I didn't pick one up in Scotland due to so many other options filling my suitcase 😅
I really like this one
Just got this today for Christmas.. will let you know here what I think.. NQA
