  • Peated whisky I like. Port cask finished whisky I like. So far...I've been underwhelmed by port cask finished, peated malt. Is this time any different?
    Enjoy.

The old Ardmore legacy at 46% was always a winner for me. Cheers

Thanks for the review Jim. I personally love port finishes or port maturation whisky. I've only got the 2020 Black Friday 22 year old from Whisky Exchange and the tradition peated travel retail bottles. I did pick up a non peated Ardmore recently from Glaschu spirits. It's called Ardlair and is a 9 year old saint emilion barrique finish whisky. Opening soon!

Thanks for reviewing this whisky, Jim. I've been somewhat hesitant of red wine/port cask finished whiskies but this one sounds worth a try.
I have a Cooper's Choice Ardmore 2011 8yo, 51.5% with a (barely perceptible?) Sauternes finish, WB149152. For several months it just seemed awkward and very simple, bold ashy peat but shallow/lacking interest so I left it alone. Came back to it this month and it had become rather nicer and more complex, the peat turning more camp fire rather than ashtray: beeswax, shellac, kerosine, aniseed, tar, TCP, elastoplast, graphite, and pepper.

This sounds very worthwhile. The only Ardmore I see on shelves here in the US is the Legacy.

Never had a distillery Ardmore. Years ago had a Old Particular Ardmore 12 CS refill bourbon hogshead that was quite the belter with clean cigarette ash if there is such a thing 😂. Last winter bought a Old Particular Ardmore 25 2nd fill bourbon cask CS that was a unusual run of unpeated malt and I think is old enough to be from the Coal fired stills? It is reported that there is a breath of peat because the equipment always runs peated malt. It's put away for a significant birthday or other such special day. Cheers Jim

Thanks for reviewing this one, Jim.
Ardmores indeed can be great. Personally not a fan of port wine matured (or finished) whiskies, so I leave this one for others to enjoy.

i liked teacher's highland cream well enough that is half ardmore, cuz it wasn't coastal peat notes and is also creamy as the name says. smoke is good if it stays in balance, and not take over

Only drink ib ardmore seems the safest way to explore

    Great review Jim!
I’ll give this a go if I see it around. I’m a bit on the fence with port influence the two I’ve picked up are the Glenmorangie 14 which I found overly sweet and a bit hot and the Kilkerran 8 Port Matured which I love and I’m going through slowly as I’m not likely to find another bottle.

Ardmore is definitely overlooked but it's so hard to find good expressions of it unless they're IB which the IBs are very very good. I haven't had this one but I'm very curious about it now. Cheers Jim!

I have this bottle in my collection, can't wait to uncork it after your rev..... NAAAH just kidding, Jim, just kidding. Wouldn't want to have THAT big a party, eh?! 😂
On a slightly more serious note, I only have one Ardmore bottle in my collection. An 11 yo Cadenhead's bottling of 70% marsala and 30% bourbon matured spirit (not CS but 46% ABV) and I think that's the only Ardmore, I have tasted so far 🤔 (decent stuff by the way, I like it!!)
Port matured whisky, well - can be both really good and really not-so-good, it's hit'n'miss imho.
Cheers buddy, loved the review 🥃😊

In this case...gonna say, good port finish. But, totally agree it can go the other way 😉

If only Ardmore was around in the US. Just no distribution.

Are you referring only to this port cask Ardmore? I see plenty of the core range Ardmore here in WI but never thought to try one.

Have you checked out the Cu Bocan port cask Jim? A cracking dram with that smoke content.

Interesting . Has Talisker gone downhill THAT much ? - after all, ARD12port did not receive rave reviews on line . . .
