Her No1 is also my no. 1
A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park is a very well written middle grade historical fiction about a homeless Korean boy who takes an interest in pottery and the adventures he has. It is set in 12th century Korea and was so good it won the Newberry award in 2002. It does not read like a middle grade. I have read Number the Stars as an Adult, and I would put it on the same level of good writing.
Thank you for the recommendation! I'll have to pick that one up.
Idk if you have read it yet but one of my FAVORITE historical fiction books is memoirs of cleopatra by Margret George. The writing is beautiful, and George is fantastic with historical accuracy and her research. The whole book is told as if you are reading Cleopatra’s diary from the time she was a kid up until her and Mark Anthony’s deaths. It is a big boy in being 960 ish pages but I couldn’t put it down.
That sounds so good. I've never heard of it and also have not read any historical set in that time period. Would love to expand my reading that way, thank you!
I’m really excited for the Georgia hunter book!! But I’m not sure she can top we were the Lucky ones!
I'm excited too!
I think as someone who struggled with p*rn in the past, I don't think it's good to leave room for temptations.. I started the book because someone at church handed it to me and I've seen reviews of Christians saying you shouldn't watch it or that it missed the point of hosea.. I'm not sure if I want to finish it or not.. I don't plan on watching the movie either..
It's good to know your own personal limits. What is okay for someone else might not be best for you.
I read Last Christmas in Paris because of one of your videos which randomly popped up in my feed and loved it. I realised that we have pretty similar taste in books. Subscribed! I've been doing research on Christian Cults for the past 8 years and hope to study it for my PhD research as well. Dinner for Vampires sounds right up my alley. Will pick it up soon. Thanks for the recs. God bless you and your family ❤️
One of the Novels mentioned has been developed into a TV Series. A Gentleman in Moscow en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Gentleman_in_Moscow_(TV_series) and the Novel it was based on. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Gentleman_in_Moscow The Novel is excellent but the TV Series is not. On major flaw in the TV Series is that the Producers favored Diversity Among their Actors over Historical Authenticity. There are members of Ethnic Groups in the TV Series that were very rare in Post WWI Moscow. Here - there is something called _The Suspension of Disbelief_ where in the viewer KNOWS that they are watching Actors - rather than something real - but - for the sake of the story - they pretend that the actors are the characters they portray. My explanation for the absurdity of this - is asking how acceptable it would be to have Martin Luther King portrayed by Conan O'Brien? This stupidity is rampant in Woke Hollywood where they care more about pushing a Political Agenda than they do about creating a movie. .
There are authors whose Historical Fiction I've read (that I remember ...) . The links below will include bibliographies of the Author"s works. Robert Graves en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Graves Who may be best know for his Novels of the Early Roman Empire - _I Claudius_ and _Claudius The God_ which were made into a BBC Television Series that was shown on PBS in the States. One should be aware though that these Novels were based on Suetonius and his work - _The Twelve Caesars_ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_historiography#Suetonius Where Suetonius tends to just throw in whatever someone said without much regard to how factual it was but only how Interesting. What's the modern version of this? _"Can't let the facts get in the way of a Good Story?"_ (attributed to a National News Correspondent during the Olympics). Colleen McCullough en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colleen_McCullough Has a _Masters of Rome_ series of I guess 7 novels taking place on or about the time of Caesar and constitute a History of the Fall of the Roman Republic. Terry C. Johnston en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_C._Johnston# He wrote several series of novels about 19th Century America. At least one is about the early 19th Century Fur Trappers who were the initial people who moved into the western wilderness. Others are about the American Indian Wars of the mid to late 19th Century. These were all _Historical Novels_ based to a large degree on real people. There are two methodologies used. One is to write from the POV of Historical Figures. This is what McCullough and Graves do. The other is to create a Fictional Character - and then move that character about - so that they are present at Historical Events - and you can see those events through their eyes. This is what Johnston does. Then - you have an entirely different genre - Alternate History. Harry Turtledove en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Turtledove is known for writing novels and novel series of this genre. Here - you have novels that are loosely base on a Historical Period - but - the Characters are only Loosely based on the Historical Characters and may be entirely fictional. In one type you have a novel about a Historical Event - that has an alternate History of what happens. In another type - you have what may be a Fantasy novel or series that is loosely based on History. One advantage I've made use of - was to read Historical Novels about a period I wanted to study - and then - read actual Histories. The novels were more entertaining - and helped carry me though the dryer Histories. One of the things that is important here - is getting a feel for where what is happening in the broader Historical Context. .
I did not know the Mrs. Bird series was continuing! I thought it was done! I've only read the first one, though. How to Lose a Lord in Ten Days looks fun!
Yes, I'm excited about it! I hope it gets wrapped up well.
Very excited for the newest by Eowyn Ivey - just put it on hold at our local library! I didn't know she had a new one coming out so thanks for the heads up!
No problem! I hope it's as atmospheric as her previous ones. Perfect for winter. ❄️
I will read the new Hunger Games book for sure
I'm excited about that one!
I tried to read Wool after watching Silo but I just couldn't get into it! Been thinking about it again since we started season 2...
I wasn't sure if it was going to work for me, but I was into it! I listened to the audiobook and did the ebook.
I am SO excited about the new Hunger Games book! I pre-ordered it the day it was announced 😂
Love that! I hope it's good and lives up to the anticipation.
OH no that's so sad about the Ruta Sepetys book. I was considering buying it for my son for Christmas, but I'm glad I didn't.
I'm curious if I'll be in the minority with my thoughts on it or not. But might be a better library check out just in case he doesn't love it.
I’m not into romance but I’m putting all the historical fiction on my list! They sound great
@@sarahj87 I didn’t used to be into romance, but here I am! Ha.
The French Kitchen is coming out in August We all Live Here in February The Last Carolina Summer in July The Dressmakers of London in February The Girls of the Glimmer Factory in January The Lost Passenger in February Before Dorothy in June The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau in June Don’t Let Him In in June Queens of Crime in February The Story She Left Behind in March Map to Paradise in March The Love Haters in May The Jackal’s Mistress in March Are all books you might love
I will definitely be reading the Hunger Games prequel I am not sure what else.. I have been focusing on blacklist books and that will continue to be my focus for 2025. Once I have my physical TBR down to a more manageable level I am hoping to get back into reading new releases.
Honestly, I should be doing the same, ha! Maybe it's good I don't have tons of anticipation for new books in 2025. I also want to purge my physical TBR.
I still want to read The Briar Club. The Only Woman in the Room might be one I’d like. Band of Brothers might be good too. 😊💙
I do like Marie Benedict a lot. I liked the only woman in the room. It was entertaining, and I got to learn about the real woman Heddy Lamar.
Yes me too, liked but didn't love. Definitely willing to try more from her.
Oh I need to read more Eowyn Ivey. Really enjoyed The Snow Child. One Good Thing and The Eights might be good. Love female friendships in books. Jiminez, Henry and O’Leary are on my radar as well. 😊💙
Have you read the Timeless Series by Gabrielle Meyer? It might be your speed I love them HF, strong female characters, time travel, significantly historical moments. The author has a new book in the series coming out early 2025.
I haven't read it but have seen it EVERYWHERE. People are really loving it. It's definitely on my radar. Thank you for the specific recommendation, I'll have it moved up the priority list.
I'll definitely be reading the new Hunger Games book, even though I read the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes recently, and only I thought it was OK. I'm not usually a fan of prequels because there isn't any tension. I guess I'll make an exception for Haymitch :)
I feel the exact same way! Here's hoping it lives up to they hype and anticipation and we fans have fun with it.
Did you say you find Abby Jimenez’s books formulaic? Hmmm. They don’t feel that way to me. I’m usually captivated by the various life-issues the characters face. Someone “guessed” at the subject matter. Their reasoning made sense. If they were right, this may be the hardest book I’ll be reading this year. All of the books you mentioned sound extremely interesting to me. My TBR list is growing by leaps and bounds! 😂
📚🎄📚
I'm looking to Murder Runs in the Family by Tamara Berry. It is the 4th installment in her cozy mystery series. You might like them.
I like videos like this because I am not in the loop as far as anticipated/upcoming books. I count on people like you for that, so thanks!!
@@heatherdegreeff1092 Thank you for watching! I know there’s a lot of Booktubers with more in-depth info on releases. I just had a few I plan on reading.
Susan Meissner has a book coming out in March. It’s called A Map to Paradise.
I did see that, but I don't loveee a hollywood/glamour/actress story usually, so I think I'll wait on that one until I hear some people review it. But we shall see!
Gloria, what is an "outliar"? I felt I was generous rating the Briar Club.
Dinner for Vampires sounds so interesting. I have really been into reading about cults recently. I don't know why! But this fits right in :)
I love a good cult book that isn't too terribly dark or gruesome. I think you'd like Dinner for Vampires!
Such a great variety! Ordered Faithful Spy for my grandson…will look into his other books too!
I hope he enjoys it!
I agree with you on the Band of Brothers. The tv series gave more depth to the men than the book. I watch it every couple of years. It reminds me of the sacrifices made by that generation.
Yes, several of the episodes completely shocked me and I couldn't believe how many young men died then.
I felt the same way about the Veronica Speedwell books. The first one was fun enough I tried the second, but all the lusting after each other you mentioned just gets worse and ruined it for me.
Good to know! I feel even better about my decision to not continue the series.
I wasn't interested in the Disney one until you mentioned literally all the shows I used to watch! 😄
It was so fun and nostalgic to hear the behind the scenes of all the shows I loved so much.
Just got Wool on my kindle.. sounds really good! What a great reading month!
Yes, it was free for prime reading, that why I started it. I hope you enjoy it too!
What a good reading month! I always appreciate your picture book mentions- I’m an aunty looking out for beautiful and meaningful books!
Thank you! I'm happy to include them as they are such a regular part of my reading every month.
Secrets of Ormdale sounds so good! I will have to give it a try 😊
I think it'll be right up your alley! (Hopefully) 🙃
You are much further along in the Maisie Dobbs series than I - but glad to know that far in you are still enjoying the series. Have you heard/read any of the Maggie Hope Mysteries by Susan Elia Macneal? Enjoyed this series as much if not more. Thanks for more picture book reviews too! ❤💚🎄
Thank you for the recommendation! I know the covers of those look familiar to me. I may have seen them sometimes at little free libraries. Next time I see one, I'll be sure to snag it. Would love something similar to Maisie Dobbs!
Ooooo! Dinner for Vampires sounds amazing.
I think it'd be a Shelly kind of read!
I also gave The Briar Club a 4. Guess I won't be reading Bletchley Riddle.!
It was such a bummer for me! I'm curious if I'm an outlier or others that will read it will enjoy it. So far I haven't seen to many of my booktube friends review it.
I was so sad that I did not like The Briar Club at all. I gave it 1 star :( I didn't like the characters, except maybe Grace, most of them just felt like stereotypes. Also, the chapters were painfully long. If the chapters went back and forth more between the characters, giving snippets of their stories each time, I think it would be greatly improved. For Historathon I also read Forty Autumns, Lion Women of Tehran, and All the Colors of the Dark.
It's not for everyone and your reasons for not liking it are totally valid. What did you think of Forty Autumns? Also, All the Colors of the Dark intrigues me.
@GloriaZThompson Forty Autumns was interesting. I was all in for the first half of the book. The portions specifically about the family members and their experiences were captivating. There was also a lot of historical context, and while important, it started to feel a bit like reading an encyclopedia. If those parts had been incorporated in a more story-like way I think it would have.worked better for me. I skimmed the last quarter or so just to get done (it's a long book!), you kind of know where it's going if you have any knowledge of the Iron Curtain and Berlin wall. I gave it 3 stars, just based on my reading experience.
I LOVED The Only Woman in the Room. As far as the book falling flat in action, a reader must consider that the book is based on Hedy Lamar's real life. Once she came to America, she was not nearly as famous or in demand as she was in Austria. Try The Personal Librarian and The Mystery of Mrs. Christie. I am eagerly anticipating her new release the Queens of Crime.
Thank you for the suggestion on what to pick up next! If I come across those, I'll be sure to snag them. And I agree with your point, not all historical fiction will be super plot heavy if the author chooses to stick as close as possible to the true story. I found that the case with Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom.
That's why I don't read what everyone else likes. I don't usually like those books. I have to read what I think is interesting even if no one else thinks so.
I have to agree with you there!
My son got me the three book set of the Wool series after we watched season one. I was hoping to read at least book one before the second season, but I got side tracked. I still want to finish reading it.
It's really good! Would recommend you pick it up. It got me excited to get back into the show.
Disappointing about the Rutys Septys co-authored book!
I know, right!? I hope it's just a fluke and I continue to love her future books.
Great reads, I always appreciate that you include favorite picture/childrens books.❤
Thank you! I try to as they are a very regular part of my reading. 😊
I also picked up multiple John Hendrix books last month. I had similar feelings about The Holy Ghost. Really liked Miracle Man by him and still have The Faithful Spy on my to-read stack.
Miracle Man and Go and Do Likewise are next for me! I finally got a hold of them at the library.
I love that you include picture books.
They are a regular part of my reading, so I must! 😊
Great video❤ Im reading orphans of the empire by alan gill😢. Australian migration from britain in the 1800s. True accounts and yes sa on kids😢😢😢😢
That seems like such a hard read but also so interesting about a time and place I'm unfamiliar with.
I read the Unknown Beloved this year and loved it. I also loved The Nature of Fragile Things - the San Francisco earthquake and fire rarely gets discussed. Another book to consider is American Duchess - Karen HarpDr, which tells the story of Alva Vanderbilt's daughter Consuelo
Agree about the San Francisco earthquake. If you come across any other reads that cover that, let me know! I think Phoenix Crown by Kate Quinn might be during then.
Gloria, was there a discssion, or??? on the Briar Cub like there was supposed to be?? I missed it, no notification. Did I misunderstand?
So sorry Eileen! It was on Lindsey’s channel last night. You can watch the recording. I posted a community post about it but not sure if that showed up in your feed or not.
