Forty Autumns is a wonderful memoir about the Berlin wall and a family on both sides. It was one of a couple books that actually got me back into reading! It read very much like historical fiction to me.
I went to add to my "want to read" list and it was already on there. Thanks for the reminder. Moving this book up my priority list because it sounds great! Love when a book pulls you in like that and you learn a lot.
The House is on Fire sounds intriguing! I loved Crow Mary!! So good. I definitely agree about the build-up to the tragedy. I actually went in to the book without having read (or if I did, I forgot) the summary, so my expectations were tempered because of that. Had I read the summary I probably would have been more disappointed than I was about the lead-up to the tragedy and how it did kind of fall flat. I can definitely see how expectations would be affected by the way the book is described. But I just adored the main character and felt such a strong connection to her and her story. Her husband was also such a fascinating and complex character. I can't wait to read The Frozen River!!! If I hadn't become a nurse I probably would've gone to midwifery school. Birth is so so beautiful. The Last Christmas in Paris makes my heart so happy!
Congratulations on your new baby! How exciting! That's a big life change :) Glad you are still finding time to read. I like the concept behind The First Forty Days! I loved The Kitchen House - haven't read Crow Mary yet. I loved A Night Divided. Nielsen's middle-grade historical fiction is always great. I'd like to read The Frozen River. And I really want to read The Maid & its sequel! Great that you are still reading so much with a newborn! That was a rough time for me. Enjoy your books!
Thank you, Sue! 💕 Oh don’t get me wrong, it’s been tough! So far 4 months in, and it’s still hard and things don’t always make sense as I’m taking care of my fussy little guy. But reading in the downtime and in the evenings has helped with some “me time.” And hope you enjoy those reads when you get to them.
PBS has a long-running series named Call the Midwife based on a trilogy written by Jennifer Worth. The books are Call the Midwife, Shadows of the Workhouse, and Farewell to the East End. I enjoyed them. I own a book called Mormon Midwife. I haven’t read it yet but it recounts the journal entries of Patty Bartlett Sessions who delivered hundreds of babies on pioneer treks and in the Salt Lake City area during the 1800s. You look lovely, btw. 🙂
Gloria, it is great to see you. I had to laugh about your “cozy” comment. I have been reading cozy stories since the 1970’s. I was shocked when I joined BookTube in late 2021 no one else was reading them. Rather, no one else was aware they were reading cozies! 😂 I found the secret to reading series is to space them out. I have been reading series since the 1980’s. Back when most of my favorites were newly written and released. We only had access to one release a year and they were such a treat to receive. But not all series are created equally. I have series by Jim Butcher*, Kim Harrison*, Patricia Briggs*, and Ilona Andrews (all urban fantasy). The names with * indicates that series books are still being published. The rest are mystery series I love by Donna Andrews (34 books), Julie Mulhern (17 books) Heather Graham (I have read 15 of her books so far), Charlaine Harris (3 series so far) and more. My very favorite was Jim Butcher’s six-volume series called Codex Alera. It is a fantasy series and nothing has topped it to date.
I didn’t even realize cozy mysteries were really a thing until booktube. I never ventured to that section at the library. Glad you love them and have been keeping up with them for years.
You're amazing that you've been able to read with a newborn! I don't think I picked up a book until my daughter was at least one, lol. One kid-related book that really helped me is "Super Nutrition for Babies: The Best Way to Nourish Your Baby from Birth to 24 Months" by Katherine Erlich (Author), Kelly Genzlinger.
Thanks for the kid book recommendation! And I didn’t expect to read much, but I get tired of scrolling when I’m holding the babe so I inevitably find lots of time to read on kindle or audio. Helps me escape for a bit 💕
I would recommend Midwives by Chris Bohjalian, The Midwife’s Confession by Diane Chamberlain, The German Midwife by Mandy Robotham. I love books with midwives and these are some of my favourites. I’m looking forward to The frozen River.
I read The Midwife 's Revolt by Jodi Daynard some years back. It's historical fiction with some real historic characters in it. I don't remember much about it, but I gave it 4 stars on goodreads. Hand you read anything by Jaime Jo Wright? She writes dual timeline suspense stories. I've really liked every book I've read by her although I'm normally not big into suspense.
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve read one Jamie Jo Wright and I didn’t enjoy it 😬 I didn’t feel like it was historical enough and dual timeline isn’t my fave. But I may need to try again with her before I give up!
This month for me had been a total, 100% mood read. However, I did want to read The Unmaking of June Farrow in December, so I carried it over. Doing that, total mood reading, I've already read 4 physical books and 3 kindle books. Funny thing, 3 of the books were book club picks and I only knew of one of them was, lol. I just hadn't looked into them at the time I picked them up 😂.
I would say it's middle of the road. It's not gratuitous or over-the-top about it, but details are given during the trial of how the rape occured, so depends on your comfort level.
Ditto. I can only read true stories. Im reading the dragons of rashid by mark martinez. Letters from an army US soldier to wife whil he was in war in iraq. Sweet sad eye opening and worth the read
@@lizlittle1641 im in montana and my middle school friend lucas and my middle school best friend married and she told me lucas was mentioned in the book. He is retired army now and just became a pediatrician. Lucas was bombed by ied bombs 3x. Got 2 purple hearts and was slightly disabled. The book mentioned some things i knew and some i didnt like the cross shooting after the bombing while the army was recuing the injured men. They were also shot at! I can not believe lucas survived! I loved The House is on Fire and The Frozen River, both made my best of 2023 list!⭐⭐⭐⭐
Love hearing that! And glad to have read some solid historical fiction last year.
💯% agree about the Frozen River.

Forty Autumns is a great book to read after A Night Divided
You are the second person to recommend that, thank you! Put a hold on it for Libby.

@@GloriaZThompson It will get better soon! Those first few months were definitely the toughest :)
❤📚📚❤️ Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth might be one you'd love.
I was also going to suggest that!
I knew it was a show, but didn't know about the books. Thanks for the recommendation!
@@GloriaZThompson You're welcome! 🤗

Thank you Nancy, and thanks for these wonderful recommendations! Definitely adding those to my radar.
The Frozen River sounds amazing!
Follow the river about mary ingles. True story and i found a bit slow at first but worth the read
Mary was pregnant. Kidnapped by indians and escaped
Great, thanks for sharing!!
I’m reading a Historical Fiction book right now called The German Midwife….so far so good!
Oh great! Who is the author?
I finished The Frozen River and I haven’t not been able to stop thinking about it!
Me too! I'm glad it's getting so much love from many.
Ahhh your bob looks so cute! 💇🏼♀️✨
Thank you girly! It was fun to chop it off.
I didn’t care for the kitchen house. I feel like the invention of wings by Sue Monk Kidd is kind of a similar vibe, but much better done.
Good to know! I own both of those on my shelves. I'm curious which one I'd like more.
Midwives is a buzzword for me to. The Secrets of Midwives by Sally Hepworth was a 5⭐️ for me….
Adding that to my "want to read" list! Hope I love it as well.

Recs... Any of Soraya Lane historical fiction. She is on ku or Amazon.
Thank you for the recommendation!
You may have already read Susan Meissner Nature of Fragile Things, but this was a great historical with some suspense. I loved it.
Yes, that one is a favorite! That's why I loved it so much and now craving more historical fiction like that read.

I like the way you said The House is on Fire was a slow burn ... I also loved The Frozen River. The name is pronounced Shavon I think
Ha! I don't even recognize puns when I say them accidently. 🤦♀️ And thanks for the tip on pronunciation. I need to be better at looking them up.
The Healing by Jonathan Odell is another historical fiction with a midwife that I remember enjoying.
Thank you for the recommendation! Adding it to my "want to read" list.
Is The Frozen River really graphic? It’s on my list but I don’t like very sexually explicit books. Also I loved the Call the Midwife book series!
I'd like to know this too.
I would say it's middle of the road. It's not gratuitous or over-the-top about it, but details are given during the trial of how the rape occured, so depends on your comfort level.

I can't stand cozy mysteries. They irritate me. I don't like the slow pace and story line with people doing everyday things.
