    Anyone remeber the card game Dominion? I always thougt it did things quite cleverly. There were cards worth victory points, but since they served no other purpose, going for the win right away nerfed your deck. You would keep drawing fewer and fewer of the already weak starting cards and all other players would leave you behind. However spend too much time optimizing your deck and someone else suddenly declares victory while you are still doing build up. So one would have to balance build up and winning while keeping an eye on the opposition. There was no set game length and every game played differently. I don't know how one would translate this into 4X computer games, but if one could it might solve some issues. Though tedious end game or no, sometimes I actually want to meditatively create an enormous blob of an empire and just tick all the boxes in the tech tree, so maybe it isn't always the answer.

      I mean you say that but I read in dev diary after dev diary about specific lategame mechanics for Eu4 at least. I mean by that definition why not just end the game in 1550 and save everyone the effort?

      @@LemonCake101 it's marketing and the fact they're selling you the illusion. It's like how Ubisoft tries to sell the illusion of open world by making you spend 30 mins walking from 1 collection mission to the next with nothing in-between.

    • @LemonCake101
      @LemonCake101 13 годин тому

      @@redcastlefan I guess you could say that? But then again for Eu4 they also do things like make frankly a pretty good revolutionary France mission tree that is only playable if you go revolutionary, so if it is a 'marketing stunt' then its one they are covering with content. Personally I think its more bad execution in this sense.

    • @redcastlefan

      @@LemonCake101 i guess youre right. but then again paradox games are like 90% dlc and content after release so its different. Plus they know their audience is mostly people on the spectrum that will grind out the late game XD.

    Playing a game as an italian state in EU4 Unite Italy Colonize most of the New World My enemies will be my enemies forever My allies will be my allies forever (im forced to keep them or im getting invaded in all flanks) My colonies can't revolt There is no more land to colonize, everything is owned by either a Great Power or a Great Power's colony/lesser ally Have so much money don't know what even do with it Can't complete focus tree because it would requiere me to start wars that I couldn't win, the IA will not start wars by their own Dead End Like 50 hours spent, the year is barely 1700 There is still more than a century for the game to end and I have NOTHING to do or the things I can do will result in me dying because of the English or the Austrians Sad that I spent years getting an alliance with the ottomans for them to send their whole army to worthless places instead of the real front.

    Stellaris is my favorite Paradox game because of it's setting and no fixation on the map of the real world. However, that is one TOTALLY game-killing aspect which has never been addressed by paradox to this day: there is no war automation. Because of this waging a war in the late game becomes a torture. You need to SHIFT+CLICK a zillion of systems to make sure your army invades every single system and you need to deal swarms of smaller AI fleets which constantly steal your systems. Automated warfare works just great in Imperator Rome, EU4 (a bit worse than Rome imao) and in HOI (well the AI at least closes all the gaps along the frontline, once the frontline vanishes it is a different story :P). So why not implement this feature for once?

    I think the Anbennar mod kinda solves lategame in eu4. Depending on the nation, you have so many missions and flavour that you usually don't run out of content until the very late game. There are also enough strong nations around that they can kind of contest the player.

    Stellaris could been actually very good among PDX games just ignore the 200 dillars DLCs, although Vanilla version of it... at this point isn't the way to play game but rather stacking major mods that expands the game, the problem is PDX doesn't give a shit about Optimization of both midgame to endgame i mean, it wasn't intended to handle a lot of textures and processing pop and fleet power (Yes, the game absolutely lags selecting fleets with above 10M power lately) and the modders are only one will sort of "fix it" (Spoiler alert: It doesn't.)

    Never played CK2, but in CK3 although I love the game, when that end date of 1453 is looming it becomes hard to care too much, the primary reason being that the game is all about making long term decisions for your dynasty, so once you reach the point where long term decisions are irrelevant it becomes hard to continue, I normally either abandon the playthrough or play on the fastest speed to get it over with.

    As a software engineer I think the reason most of these features are not realized not only because of unwillingness to make them but also because of the enormous bloat it will cause to the save file and the system itself. Most of the features mentioned will require some sort of logging to each province in multiple ways. So how many killed on each province, how much the province produced and so on. When each event has happened and in which country, so it can be later viewed in the timeline. And it just multiplies and multiples. Comparing the pressure it will cause to the significance of these features, I think it is not reasonable to have them. Although I do agree, they would be very cool to have. Maybe just a mod would be a better idea.

    The AI is the big issue. In almost every Paradox game, it's just too aggressive, or not aggressive enough, rarely goes after the player, and typically spams garbage to no end, especially in HoI4. In EUIV, the AI has far too large of a tendency to blob, and then promptly sit there and do nothing, then proceed to pose almost zero threat in an actual war. It's incompetent and exclusively mappaints. In CKII and III I actually enjoy playing them. Because the AI at least has the illusion of being competent. It feels genuinely fun. The two games that I think have nailed late-game are Vicky 2 and 3. While it's easy to snowball in both eventually, Vicky has a tendency to still keep everyone on a near-equal playing field. Yeah, you can fuck over everyone around you and become a nation capable of taking on the next two powers at the same time, but you're going to to turn most of the world against you, and if you pick the wrong fight, you will get crushed. In Vicky 3, the economic aspect of turning the world against you really comes into effect. Your economy will stagnate really bad if you can't export goods due to other markets embargoing you, and if you can't secure what you need in your own borders, you have to stop being a pariah and reconcile otherwise you will wind up suffering. Revolutions also pose a legitimate threat. If you don't listen to the people, the people will force what they want on you, and unless you're fairly stable and have a large military, your late-game population is going to crush you.

Like, not only is it great RP wise but it is also amazing in general. Edit: i have to add that in my last game I got rid of the nobility, the clergy and picked up something that made the burgers dont raise up when i take land from them so I was able to have 100% crownland

    I looked into ways to get parliament as a republic on the wiki. I found out that Venice has a mission that gives access to a reform that improves stuff slightly for trade and gives you access to parliament (no estates are removed from taking it according to the wiki. It also says it doesn't require the Venice government reform or even staying as Venice, all it says is you need to complete the mission to unlock it). The problem however is that you can't reform into Venice and there are not enough reasons to chose Venice if you want to become Italy, however it at least can be said that you could still become two sicilies and Sardinia-piedmont before you become Italy (the question remains however if the reform is worth it do to the vagueness of the missions)
