HAIL CAESAR EPIC BATTLES - THE PUNIC WARS; Battle Report 03 - The Interception
It's time for another Punic Wars Epic Battles game. This time we are using slightly expanded armies both of which are being led by a General of Legend in a match-up chosen by the channel members. Also in this scenario we are trying out the new Roman Ballista stone-thrower and Incendiary Swine which @warlordgames have kindly sent over to try out. We are trying out some house rules for the swine as their are none in the main rules.

Why did the Triarii go back to “normal” line formation vs their special “column, but counts as line” formation? Loving these battle reports by the way! Hope to see more soon!
Basically... We forgot 😅 only realised at the end. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it
I like the grit of loading, and the way you can experiment with crews is really interesting.
I love your table set ups, especially the ground relief. How do you achieve that?
Awesome battle report, as usual. I love the Roman dice. Where'd you get them?
Thanks 😁👍 it was great fun to play. The dice are a custom order from Counter Attack Bases, you may want to ask for ones that roll better though 😅
Great report as usual. How long was the game? 4 hours? I’m looking forward to trying Midgard. Also The Barons War for Crusader Skirmish, even Lion Rampant. Find myself shying away from Hail Caesar a bit these days.
Outstanding battle Gents! Thank you for sharing!
Cheers matey, thanks for watching 😁
Brilliant game. I also think Robin was ‘willing’ that double 1 throw! Well done to you both and thanks.
😅 I was genuinely aghast. Glad you enjoyed it. I need more Gauls
Fantastic game really enjoyed it I do like the Flaming pigs brilliant game good rolling Robin🤠🤠🤠👍👍👍
Thanks so much, thanks for watching 👍
Thx for the battle report! The game looks interesting. Maybe a new game for next year,
No problem, thanks for checking it out 👍
Thank you for the report, i learned that a unit only has to take a break test during a draw if it was shaken at the start of the combat (we played if it got shaken during this round) hiwever I think when the supporting units have to take a break test because the unit they are supporting breaks, you also have to deduct the difference in casualties from the result.
You're quite right, we forgot that. But yeah it's only if you're shaken at the start of combat you test on a draw, that's why the Phalanx rule is so brutal 👍 thanks for watching
Nice battle! I’m still deciding on this scale or 28mm. The Roman units look a bit too boxy for me. I have painted some 28mm for Clash of Spears those were fun to paint.
That's fair enough, it's only a representation so go with what you like best 👍
Just discovered this channel as I was interested in the Crusader figures from more than a year ago and love the way they were based, etc. I have to comment that these 15mm look less pleasing than the 28mm. I do get it, however, that from a gaming experience, it might be more fulfilling to have more units on the table. My other comment concerns the rules. HC, seem to have a Games Workshop genre to them... at least that is the impression l am getting.
Thanks for watching and welcome aboard. I agree that 28mm is definitely more dynamic and visually impressive, at least to me. But the purpose of this scale is to simulate larger battles with more units as you rightly point out. For that you have to sacrifice some of the aesthetics. Well, Rick Priestley wrote these rules and Warhammer/40K so I guess there will be a similar feeling but the rules themselves are very different. However in those games, the individual matters, stats are given to models not units as in these rules. There is no casualty removal, formations matter, command is very different, it goes on.. it's a long list but I totally get your point that the feel can be similar 👍
@7thson726 thank you for your response. Very much appreciated. I fear l am going to heavily copy your method of basing and painting the 28mm miniatures, but l suppose it's fair to quote that 'imitation is the highest form of flattery'. I have managed to find a copy of Shattered Lances, which l understand was highly thought of 20 years ago. Have you experience of these rules?
I have to say I feel for you in these battles because the dice are almost never in your favour. Props to you for not letting it get to you while you’re playing though
😅 thanks, I appreciate it. It's been a rough year for the dice rolls for sure haha. I just enjoy gaming, while it's nice to win I genuinely enjoy gaming with my mates and creating a cool battle more 👍
Great battle, Robin's saving throws and your knack of rolling double 1s continues to confound the laws of probability! I've been on a mission to paint up my Hannibal starter set since July, I have 2 divisions and a bit of Carthaginians, and 1 division of Romans and still sticking with it. In fact I could probably have a similar sized battle to what you and Robin played with a judicious use of allies, just the inspiration I need to keep going - thanks!
This has not been my year for dice rolling for sure 😅
Keep up the EPIC good work. I’d love to buy into this, but having just finished Reb epic ACW the thought of more little bases drives me a bit spare.
Yeah, totally understand the need for a palette cleanser 😁
I have been waiting for this! I might go all in on epic hannibal because of you all
😁 I mean, could be worse 👀 hope you enjoyed it buddy
Libyan infantry have long spears and deny the charge bonus to hit.
Yeah, forgot that 😅
Great battle report as always! Models and board looking great again. Quite liking the scope for mass battle on a normal size board this scale allows, only issue for me is my eyesight is a challenge even painting the Gallic wars! We have a similar deployment event where your commander had been fed false information so your opponent gets to redeploy one of your units.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 👍 I think events around deployment are great fun and really add to the fog of war, so many times armies were drawn up in rubbish positions because of poor intelligence or other reasons 😁
Exciting battle and very well presented. You knew just how to edit it. Didn't know about flaming swine before. I'll have to Google that up!
Look up the siege of Megara. The pigs were lit and sent towards the elephants which caused them to turn and trample their own troops.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Must have been quite the sight.... And smell 😅
Great game guys. I think Martin will soon field just a Gallic army as soon as the troops are painted
That's my new plan and I'm sticking with it 😁
One of your best battles. Excellent.
Really pleased you liked it, was great fun 😁
I've been using these a fair bit, and find the paint flow a bit on the high side, so they are more like a loaded brush than a conventional felt tip or Sharpie, so you have to be careful not to flood areas. I personally find the tips a bit on the big side, as I think most people will be using them for detailing, rather than big slabs of colour. It might be nice for AK to offer a finer tip version. As for the metallics, AK offer a different range in silver, gold, copper and old bronze, but unlike the "Real" series, these are more like real metal, so the silver is actually chrome, and the gold is very bright. The other two are somewhat more "granular" and less reflective, but all are very useful and can obviously be dulled down with a bit of wash.
I'll have to try the metallics out, I have seen them at a shop in town 👍
Are these regular Incendiary Swine, or the eco-friendly reusable ones? 🔥🐖🔥
😅 definitely not reusable 😅🔥
@@7thson726 Unless you use them as army rations.
Another great battle report. What a treat
@marcwormmeester7548 thanks 😁
Hi. I have a Hail Cesare question. What size bases do I need for Germanic warriors .. or any other Romes enemies for that matter Thanks Chris
Hi there, so I tend to base my warband style units 60/65mm wide the same as my normal units but make them alot deeper so I can fit more models on the base, normally 75x80mm
@ Thank you.
Ive now played these rules 3 times now - solo - all three games ended prematurely IMHO - VP system is too rewarding and needs to be scaled back to allow more action on the game table, maybe no VP awarded for melee wins, rally and or disruption = no bases. Alternatively arbitarily mutiply the VP break point by 1.5 or 2. Otherwise I do like the feel of the game and the bursts of action with consec special events cards. Some house rules coming me thinks.
Hopefully have another game coming in a few weeks 👍 I quite like the VP system but agree that arbitrary ending a game can be frustrating, I'm coming round more now to the use of timers for battles
awesome battle report. can i ask everyone where is the long haired mats from? Will we see another Black Powder game this Christmas with Hayley?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 👍 so the long haired Mats are just made from teddy bear fur off eBay 😁 we may see a Napoleonic game with Hayley though she did like using the Romans 😅🤔
Awesome!! Can I ask your tress for your games. You make them yourself? What you use or what scale you roughly using? I’ve been looking at HO or O scale trees that are pre made.
@josephsaliba9514 so some are home made but the majority are from Last Valley Terrain, he sells through FB and at shows 👍
What is the point v a brush? I don't get it
On the pen?
A whole lot less messy, for one thing, and you don't have to keep reloading the brush.
Have you considered GDA2 at all?
I have wanted to give it a go but not many local players who want to 👍
Great stuff, I think these will also make good Australian bushrangers
Good shout, would like to see some used that way 👍
i am building a 28mm small british army of the Zulu war. How many figures should i have per company? So its to scale?
So, from my understanding the British army was changing quite a bit at this point. Usually each battalion had eight companies of roughly 100 men inc officers however these were often under strength. I have between 18-24 men in my units of British Infantry so roughly 4:1. However I prefer more dynamic and scenic diorama type basing so someone else may fit more in neat lines and files. Hope that helps
quick non fighter question which type/code/sizes of Big red bat bases did you use for your English civil war infantry regiments and cavalry
Ah, I think I just answered this on another comment on an ECW video 😁
My local game store has a saga night, I'm interested as i already have Viking models, but reading the rules, I'm blown away by how simple it is compared to something like Warhammer.
That's the thing, the base system is very simple, it's the battle boards and how the abilities interact with units to create the synergy that can be really engaging and tricky
Excellent episode, Midgard sound really good and what a good chap James is! Thank you.
That was a top conversation, so many throwbacks but also just a wealth of information 👍
It's a pretty crunchy game with lots of mechanics and interesting crew skill checks. I like how you need to carefully plan what ammunition to load, as there is a significant time delay (except for a light tank) before ammo selection and the round being loaded and ready to be fired. Can this game be integrated into a game of Bolt Action, or are the systems unable to be combined into one epic battle of armor and infantry?
Glad you enjoyed it. Personally I don't think you could integrate this as a whole, maybe a few mechanics, like the time and maybe the cards but I think this level of crunch wouldn't gel well with the relatively "quick" play of BA, though if someone does manage it I would like to see it 👍
Excellent show - seems James and I had very similar childhood interactions with the original Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Fighting Fantasy books and Rogue Trader in the 80s, with the small difference being he went on to be an acclaimed rules writer and I didn't! Really looking forward to giving Midgard a go, hope you'll be doing some battle reports
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 👍
Hi just starting a new ECW army found big red bat bases , but what sizes do you buy for your infantry and cavalry
Hi there, that's awesome to hear, it's a great period. So my musketeers are on FK&P13b , the pikes as standard are on FK&P3 (I've used bigger ones for large pike blocks) and my cavalry are on FK&P6 Hope that helps 👍
