I've been using these a fair bit, and find the paint flow a bit on the high side, so they are more like a loaded brush than a conventional felt tip or Sharpie, so you have to be careful not to flood areas. I personally find the tips a bit on the big side, as I think most people will be using them for detailing, rather than big slabs of colour. It might be nice for AK to offer a finer tip version. As for the metallics, AK offer a different range in silver, gold, copper and old bronze, but unlike the "Real" series, these are more like real metal, so the silver is actually chrome, and the gold is very bright. The other two are somewhat more "granular" and less reflective, but all are very useful and can obviously be dulled down with a bit of wash.
I have been waiting for this one. I still cant get my head around this concept - colouring in minis 😂😂 The end results look great - the tank, with the added shaded and weathering, looked no different to when using paints. A great little product, but im old fashioned and love my brushes too much. Great little preview/review/tester. Thank you.
@@7thson726 I belive you. The idea of flexibility of even poping the cap open and doing something under 5 mins without prepping the paint and doing the cleaning is mind blowing.🔥
Thank you for sharing this review with us. I've seen these pens advertised in several hobbyist magazines, but have been leery of purchasing them. I definitely see using them on gaming structures, especially for architectural detail work on the western buildings for Dead Man's Hand. A new tool to experiment with in the figure painting realm 🙂
If you cut a pair of strips of masking or painter's tape, fold part of each back on itself, you can stick the two strips to the side and underside of the upper insert at the ends so the folded part sticks up an inch or so, and that gives you handles to lift the upper insert out of the box without having to fumble at the tabs between the slots.
How do these compare to acrylic markers like Posca or Molotov? It would be great if they had dual tips, a square chisel one for coverage and a thinner brush for detailing. Including a blender market like most illustration brands do, would make blending possible.
These have me interested. I travel for work at times and normally take some hobbying with me, I feel like taking some of these instead of paints would be a lot easier!
They are sadly sold out in our country, but nevertheless, i pre-ordered myself 2 of these big sets, which you‘ve gratefully shown us. That’s a must have 😍
@@7thson726 Indeed. Sometimes you spend to many hours on details and when you have a game you notice that you and nobody else even notic your hard work from distance. 😀
@@NicGamz this happens so many times, i went to the effort of making sure all my Napoleonic units have the right savings etc, half the time the bases end up mixed up on the table as I'm rushing to set up... No one notices 😅
for those interested as well as the ak interactive set i also bought an "Arrtx" 30 colour set off amazon to see how those compare , i would say that the pens are near enough identical in performance and quality to the AK ones and as to painting small figures , i finished a 300 viking 10mm army over 3 days
I’m really enjoying my markers great video Martin 👍 AK has another line coming soon called play markers. I have been using them a lot on scatter terrain and for vehicles
Yeah I would like to see some smaller tips as well, hopefully they are in the pipeline. They have another range called "Play" markers coming which looks smaller. Maybe they were trialing the system with these first 👍
AK pens look good will have to try a few out the yellow does seem nice. Have you ventured to Miniature Kingdoms yet ? Will you be home Sunday the 1st of September as I will be taking a trip to B ST E that day morning or afternoon. Cheers Grant
Thumbs number 1.... hah!!! beat you number 2. They most certainly do look very interesting. I was in Hobbyshop not so long ago and notice a similar system that got me thinking (unsuitable for figures of course) and hey ho AK release these. Most interested indeed.
Once they've been applied, how long does it take to dry? If they are acrylic, I wonder if one can use a brush afterwards to push the pigments around before it dries.

I'll have to try the metallics out, I have seen them at a shop in town 👍
I got some to try and mostly use the black for tank road wheels, etc. But after seeing this, I am getting the yellow to use on my Spanish Dragoons:)
That yellow is ace 😁
Try the "Rubber" black. It's more a very dark grey and good for road wheels.

Thank you! Cheers for watching 👍😁
The ones I own I have really enjoyed using them for blocking in and then washing and picking out highlights after
Absolutely, I've found they are spot on for tackling edge highlights as well 👍
These are the best thing to happen to scale modelling the last decade. Id honestly pay £10 each as theyre that useful.
I do enjoy using them, I have already had to pick up a few more to replace the ones that have run out through all the use 😁
I love this! Just seeing this makes me feel that I can finish my Genestealer Cult Army! All those crazy colors
They are very handy - im using mine alot at the moment, on weapons in particular

I think dual tips would have been ideal. A finer point especially. They flow better than the posca pens I have for sure but are thinner 👍

Absolutely, I even coloured in the base coats on some epic Carthaginians while I was cooking dinner 😁😅
An excellent review Martin, another great way to get people into the hobby
Cheers buddy, I think this would also help keep people in the hobby who maybe we're starting to struggle with traditional brushes 👍

Nice review Martin, picked some for my large scale vehicles
Glad you found it helpful mate 👍
Nice review, Martin. I'm certainly interested in getting some of these for my ww2 vehicles
Glad you found it useful mate 👍
Very nice video. I like the epic scale figures, well done. 👍
Cheers buddy, I could go back and make them neater but honestly I think they'll do. 3ft rule and all that 😁

Hello mate, I'm not to sure as I may be away, pop message nearer the time 👍
@7thson726 OK will do
I am super missing gold tones. I would love to try them on trims on my power armor dudes!
I would love some gold ones, I think the new range that's more aimed at Wargamers has golds (Playmarkers I think they are called) 👍
@@7thson726 thank you very much for the info, I will take a look at that :-)

Haha thanks very much 😁 they are definitely worth a look, I've found myself gravitating towards using them more and more for certain jobs
I can think of a few applications where these would speed things up so much!! I'm reporting you for cruelty to tanks though 😂
I'm also leaving it unbiased and decal-less 😁
Hmm,might give them a try
They are worth a look 👍
Once they've been applied, how long does it take to dry? If they are acrylic, I wonder if one can use a brush afterwards to push the pigments around before it dries.
It dries very quickly, by the time I had finished the right hand side of the tank the left was completely dry. You wouldn't have long 👍
I have this set on order, I want to try using them on the Epic Hannibal range.
So I found them a great help, especially for the weapons. Doing the spears and swords at the end took about 10 seconds a strip 😁
I think these are som kind of game changers
I have found myself using them more and more over the last week for hard edges on armour 👍
Would these be good for the epic napoleonics do you reckon or is that range of epics too fiddly for these?
I think they would be, certainly for the muskets, bayonets and crossbelts at the end 👍
@@7thson726 thanks Martin
How long do you think they would last or have any of the more used ones become unusable .
The ones I've been using are still going well, a couple of the tips aren't as pointy but as I'm not detailing with them it's not an issue for me 👍
Need to find a place to buy in the US
Hopefully they'll get a distributor there👍
Are they suitable for actually writing letters
Depends - if you mean text on miniatures, then no 👍 If you mean calligraphy then yes 😉
One less excuse for not painting my Flames of War and Bolt Action pile of shame. Bugger!
😅 ass this to base ready mix, fast drying glue and ryou can knock out a tank in-between conversations
What is the point v a brush? I don't get it
On the pen?
A whole lot less messy, for one thing, and you don't have to keep reloading the brush.
Too bad these sets are out of stock everywhere in the US.
Yeah it's the same here in the UK, I think sand has been huge 👍
