A super battle report. Had the joy of watching this on a sunny holiday morning overlooking Barmouth Beach this Friday 😂 Yesterday, I took the plunge into Hail Caesar. I brought the two standard Battalion boxes and the rule book. Looking forward to painting them up and having a few beginner games with them. Thanks for your video, you showcase these games so well.
Really good battle report, thanks! It's very helpful to see the game played, and it's also keeping me motivated to get through my Hannibal box. I think you may need to give your dice a bit of a talking to, the threat of decimation might inspire them to roll better.
As always, thanks for taking the time to share your game. I am just coming to Epic Hannibal and have not read all of the rulebook, but I have been playing SPQR, a boardgame from GMT and in that game, the Triarii have restrictions that make it hard to release them unless the Roman army are significantly under threat i.e. they are very much kept as the 3rd line of defence. I hope to find something in the Epic rules that puts the hand of restraint on them.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍 There aren't really any restrictions as such but you can only take the 3 types of Roman units in equal numbers. You could house rule something, like Triariai can only receive charge orders if at least 50% of the division is shaken.
Nice batrep, "fun with elephants" (happens a lot when we use them in our "Clash od Spears" games as well) and very good Romans. Maybe the Carthagenians should have been a bit "more en block"...while it makes foran interesting report as everything was a bit spread out, they might have needed the reinforcement. Anyway, the final word has the dice god!
Excellent report! I really enjoyed that! Its not so much that Martin had very bad luck throughout, he just did not roll as well as Robin at crucial moments. The table looked good , a nice simple teraian approach that is so effective. I have to say that having watched both vids, I don't think this is a game that I myself would invest in, too many other commitments but I could certainly be persuaded to play!
Thanks for watching mate, really appreciate it and your thoughts 👍 it's rather hard when setting up these tables to reign it in with the scenery so there is enough room to manoeuvre. We'll have to see if we can sort a gaming day one day, 1/2 Ruckus 1/2 Punic wars 😁
Hi there. First, my thanks for these great battle reports! I really love them and made me buy my own Epic Punic Wars set. Thanks! I totally enjoy how you shot them. Allow me to point out a few rule mistakes? Perhaps it already has been done in the comments but maybe this will help. I am trying to help for even better batreps. Sorry if this sounds rule lawyery. - if a commander fails an order, your commander may still move as normal. - if you swap manipels with the manipel rule, your unit that is now diagonal at the back cannot support that turn. - the -1 to hit if you attack open order units does only apply during ranged attacks. This penalty does not apply in melee. Battleline units shred open order units. - Open order units do attack in melee with a -1 though. - the +1 to hit bonus to open order units attacking elephants only applies to attacking open order infantry, not cavalry. (As it says in the text, unless this is FAQ-ed). - slings incur a -1 to morale saves at 6" or closer.
Thanks very much for taking the time to comment 👍 glad you enjoy the videos. Don't worry you don't sound rules lawyery 😁 to be fair we realise most of those after the fact. Been playing HC since it came out but when filming there are so many other things to think about the odd rule will fall through the cracks. I always go with the idea that as long as you are consistent for the rest of the game then it doesn't really matter, I just make a note when I'm editing and trying to remember next game 🙂
Really enjoying your Epic Battles content! As I've watched the first two battles, it makes me wonder if the elephants aren't best used as the second attacking unit along with infantry? They are glass cannons as you said, but their small base would allow them to join a lot of attacks made by infantry rather than being in support (although admittedly this would still be harder against legions with their smaller frontage). Seems like you might get better bang for your buck than having them fighting alone? It's an interesting unit to think about...
Excellent chaps. Yes I think you got the pilum shooting(or not) right in the end. Feels like the elephants need tend used to disrupt the manipular rule - just not sure how to do that!
I think so as well, cheers bud 👍 I think the answer with the elephants is essentially - let them loose. The thing is if you are building the army as per the restrictions in the list it's 1 elephant every 8 units.... That's alot of painting 😅
Pila can be thrown for a shooting attack because hastati and princepes have a short range value. They only have a short range value so they cannot make closing shots.
Hi, again a great battle report. If I woulnd't have my romans, gauls, knights and arabs in 28mm.....but I started TYW and ACW in Epic just recently. As for the terrain : which battle map ( if it is one ) do you use in the battle ? Looks great. I assume you place some books or similar under the mat to create the hills ? Keep up the good work...both of you 😊
Great battle report! One question, how did you build your board, especially the hills? It looks like you draped a mat over foam hills? It looks fantastic!
That's pretty much it, I form the ground forms from towels and t shirts as they look more natural, then I add roads, buildings and trees and then finally the scatter and scrub 👍
Pretty much, I think that the Romans are more "playable" out the box, the strength of the Carthaginians is the diversity within the choice of units, however that is also the issue, finding the best combination to play with 👍
@@7thson726 Yeah, the more I look at it the more I think the burden of game balancing is actually put on the players which is not very helpful when you are inexperienced player. However I am going to play about with the make up of my divisions and see if that makes a difference 👍
Interesting battle report; still confused as to why the hastatii on the right flank got support from the triarii who were directly behind them when they should be diagonal to provide support for combat. Got the impression the manipular units need to be in quincunx (checker board pattern) formation for support and unit changeover. Similar situation again on the left flank with the supports being directly behind and partial overlaps on the rear when they should be diagonal corner to corner.
The manipular support rule states that the units may be supported by units positioned diagonally behind them with the manipular rule and that they may benefit from both manipular supports and regular supports (but still by no more than 3 per combat as normal). It would be fairly easy to house rule if you wanted to. They may only Manipular swap with a unit diagonally behind.
