1950's Flathead Garage - Burned To The Ground

I met an older gentleman that was interested in selling some old engines and truck parts. He has 70 acres full of stuff. He wanted to take me to show me his old garage from the 50s. The place was terribly overgrown and wooded. When we got their he learned that it had burned long ago. This place is deep in the woods and he didn't even know it had burned. Thank you for watching! Anyway, he inherited a property that belonged to his great grandfather. On that property sits an old barn and a blacksmith shop. STUCK Starter Drive Repair - Ratcheting Gear Drive Bendix - DIY

I bought this modern starter with a ratcheting gear drive. They have a clutch drive (ratcheting Bendix) that can easily get stuck when moved prior to install. I didn't thoroughly read the instructions so I got mine stuck as soon as I opened the box. Once it's stuck open then it will not fit into the opening so I immediately started looking for the fix. I found a few options but I came up with t...

A great idea if you had a single angle valve seat/valve. Similar to just using a valve cutting paste and back lapping with the valve inserted into the drill bit. But how would this work with a multi angle valve job?? Wouldn't you risk sanding the valve multi angle machined cuts off? Probably.
Probably. I only use this method on old flathead blocks that have very pitted seats that valve grinding compound probably wouldn’t help much.
@ChadDrake4185 OK. Great method for those types of heads I reckon. Head machining where I live is stupid expensive. Something like your idea keeps coin in your pocket.
@@Doctoradhd1I agree. Not only money but also time. Where I live, no one will take a flathead in for machining. The last place closed up a couple years ago. Machine shops are becoming extinct and those still alive are notoriously expensive and SLOW. People don’t like waiting 6 months to get work done. At least I don’t.
Thanks bro for the tip

wow!!!!!!
I just found this video, its Kool , you kicked its ass, I hoe your little Dog dose not get Dirty when watching you. , i has a cat that would watch me work on my cars , she would get oil on her sometimes
Very helpful. Thanks for taking the time and sharing it. Much appreciated.
You're very welcome! I'm glad it helped.
What keeps it from locking out again when you start it? I unlocked mine, then when I spin the starter up it just throws it out and locks it again. Doesn’t seem to have a spring on it either to pull it back to its starting point. I don’t quite understand. Does it have to be installed to function properly?
Once it’s installed in your engine you’ll see. The centrifugal force of your turning engine will unlock the drive and spin it back in. It’s definitely a weird thing. But you’ll see once installed.
Why dry? I have strong urge inside to try that with oil..
@@hessuhopolainen good question, I don’t know. I don’t recall if I tried it with oil. Seems like my sandpaper lasted longer and cut better without oil or water. But I honestly don’t recall. I think oil would work fine
Hell yeah! It works and I love it! Thanks!
You're welcome! I'm glad it worked out for you.
Good gravy, I literally brought home a '52 F-1 about 2 weeks ago and I ordered a rebuild kit last night. You just saved me a lot of time looking around how to do it. Well that and the carb kit also. Actually I ordered a new pump and the kit just to make sure of the quality of either so I'm glad I did now.
Thank you! I ordered a 12 v starter and it came with paperwork that mentioned 6V. So “dum dum” removed the little cardboard sleeve and bench tested to ensure it was in fact 12v. Of course that locked up the bending. Your video made my day!
Exactly what happened to me. I’m glad it helped you.
Beautiful music.
I’ve tried EVERY METHOD POSSIBLE. I’m not a tool. I’ve rebuilt engines. I CANNOT get this stupid Bendix unlocked. I can’t even get the collar back to punch out the pin. WTF 🤬
Whata stupid retarded design. Dumb engineers
Where did you source that vintage looking instrument cluster from?
For the rectangle gauge that goes in the 41-47 cabovers I use Classic Instruments 1940 Ford Gauge Sets FC40OE. Summit part number is CIN-FC40OE. They are just 1940 ford style gauge clusters. For the earlier COE 1938-40 I use the equivalent 4 3/8 1951-52 Ford F1 gauges by New Vintage USA 37215-02 2 Gauge Kit Woodward Series 4 3/8" Beige. I hope this helps.
@ChadDrake4185 🙏
You do good work
Thank you.
Keep the battery off of the cement floor, the cement will drain the power out of it.
Surely you don’t really believe that.

Nice truck what chassis did you use
@@guscabrera561 2002 Dodge Dakota chassis
Worked like a charm thanks so much! Question when installing the starter do you leave the nuts on the starter bolts or remove? Thanks in advance I’m struggling getting it in.
Yes, remove the nuts from the end of the bolts, leave the bolts in the starter. Those bolts will secure the starter to the block. Just be careful with the body of the starter once those nuts are removed. Be sure to keep it all together
Really do appreciate this , started the revival process on my mother in laws 52 f1 that’s has been sitting in the woods for 25+ years , got it dug out moved , had to do some rewiring on the ignition system, has spark from coil to points , just waiting to get some money to buy new spark plug wires as mice have destroyed the originals , then I believe I’m gonna rebuild the manual fuel pump but plan to do a temp fuel system just to get her started
Gas leaking, sparks froth jumper cables a wall of wooden drawers net to him. What could go wrong?
Forgot the exposed fan
My new starter is like the one in the video. Mine isn’t catching the flywheel. It’s spins good when you hit the starter button but just not catching the flywheel. No missing teeth or anything like that. My old starter done the same thing but I just thought it was old and worn out. Any help would be nice. It’s a 41 ford I saved from going to the scrap yard.
Flathead v8 with stock transmission? What kind of starter are you using?
@@ChadDrake4185 all stock. The starter is just a aftermarket one. It has the same bendix like the one in the video. I can move it fine it’s not locked and seems to move fine. The old one is the spring style bendix.
@@buddygotchamake sure the bolts on the end of the shaft are long enough. I bought a flathead starter from power master a while back and it just spun and didn’t turn the flywheel. Determined the problem was because one of the bolts holding the bendix to the shaft, was too short. The shaft was spinning in the bendix. Let me know once you check. I’ll think more about your situation to see if I can help.
Excellent hands on feed back! Thanks.
Hi Chad, where did you buy the rebuild kit? Thanks your video is very helpful
I bought my rebuild kit from a seller on eBay. My pumps are the tapered pumps. I tried searching for a rebuild kit recently for another subscriber and I wasn’t able to find one online. I’m sure they are out there. Check with the seller “NJPARTS” on eBay. Find one of their listings and send them a message asking about a 60hp water pump rebuild kit. The part number I used is BB63. The Ford part number is 52-8591. I hope this helps
Thank you. I had to do this twice since I must have caught the ring gear on the way in and locked it again.
@@CedarTrailsLiving you’re welcome. Glad it worked out.

Sweet sounding motor!
Great video. So is the wood frame you painted black bolted to the metal bed frame? Thinking of doing something similar to my 2002 ranger.
Yes. I built metal stanchions and welded them to the metal chassis. Then I used 4x4 treated lumber to lay on those stanchions giving me a flat surface to lay the 4x4 cross members. Then, I lay the 2x12 lumper on those cross members. Everything is welded or bolted with galvanized 3/8” carriage bolts.
@@ChadDrake4185 I don't have a MIG welder, but if I end up having to do some on frame welding I will probably pick up a stick welder. Took welding back in highschool a few years ago. I'm also considering getting an old flat bed truck in the future, would you say they are worth it? It seems like you did a full on restoration for this truck, I would more likely be buying something already running. I've seen a lot of older flat bed trucks (not the collectors kind) going for around $5k or less.
@@Death2Compromise I highly recommend a MiG welder. Super simple. I use a Lincoln 140 weldpak. It only uses 120v and welds everything I ever need. Plus, it has an aluminum spool gun so I can MiG aluminum too.
@@ChadDrake4185Thanks, I'll look into it!
@@ChadDrake4185 Luckily, with the simple frame design of the ranger, I won't need to do any welding! 👍

We have traveled the 127 in Tennessee several shows I wish you would have said where this stop was at thx nice video
It’s on signal mountain TN. I’m not sure how to describe which stop exactly. Most of these vendors are there each year. It’s the best stop on the route, in my opinion.
Thx for getting back to us we live in Dandridge Tn
Exelente❤
In the 60's and 70's did valves and seats come from the factory with the three angle or were they pretty much all 45 degree
I don’t know.
Worked like a champ with my tie rod fork. Felt like a dummy for taking it out of the box and locking it open almost instantly. Only had to feel that way for about 10 min :)
😂 I felt the exact same way. I even removed the big orange label that says “do not turn or it will lock” before I even read it. I actually locked mine before I even pulled it out of the box. Im glad this video helped you.
I like your oil pressure gauge
I have one of these and can not get it to retract. Tried what your showing and no luck. I went ahead and installed it thinking the engine will kick it out when it starts but that's not working either. And it's a brand new bendix and starter.
Hmm. There’s another video showing a bench grinder menthod in order to get it spinning fast enough. Are you using a good, strong 12v battery? It has to spin fast.
@ChadDrake4185 I'll give the grinder method a try. Battery is in good shape. I took the starter back out so I can at least pull start it and drive it lol 1963 f600 with a 292
