sure strip the block first but when the valves are stuck like yours then hot tank it first so you can get out the valves easy. Then using En-Rust will work good because all the oil will be gone completely

I never had your trouble removing valves & guides with original for tools but I think your first big mistake with an old engine is strip it & get it hot tanked with caustic chemicals. make sure to remove the rear Pot metal oil seal retainer as it will be eatened up with the hot tank chemicals. Then all your valves should not be a problem. What you are doing is sure the hard way. And too after hot tank you may find you have a shot block beforehand.

I’ve always stripped down totally before taking a block to be cleaned/tanked. In the case of this block, I’m not taking anywhere. It’s gonna be stripped and built 100% in my garage.
