Worked like a champ with my tie rod fork. Felt like a dummy for taking it out of the box and locking it open almost instantly. Only had to feel that way for about 10 min :)
😂 I felt the exact same way. I even removed the big orange label that says “do not turn or it will lock” before I even read it. I actually locked mine before I even pulled it out of the box. Im glad this video helped you.
Thank you! I ordered a 12 v starter and it came with paperwork that mentioned 6V. So “dum dum” removed the little cardboard sleeve and bench tested to ensure it was in fact 12v. Of course that locked up the bending. Your video made my day!
Worked like a charm thanks so much! Question when installing the starter do you leave the nuts on the starter bolts or remove? Thanks in advance I’m struggling getting it in.
Yes, remove the nuts from the end of the bolts, leave the bolts in the starter. Those bolts will secure the starter to the block. Just be careful with the body of the starter once those nuts are removed. Be sure to keep it all together
What keeps it from locking out again when you start it? I unlocked mine, then when I spin the starter up it just throws it out and locks it again. Doesn’t seem to have a spring on it either to pull it back to its starting point. I don’t quite understand. Does it have to be installed to function properly?
Once it’s installed in your engine you’ll see. The centrifugal force of your turning engine will unlock the drive and spin it back in. It’s definitely a weird thing. But you’ll see once installed.
I have one of these and can not get it to retract. Tried what your showing and no luck. I went ahead and installed it thinking the engine will kick it out when it starts but that's not working either. And it's a brand new bendix and starter.
Hmm. There’s another video showing a bench grinder menthod in order to get it spinning fast enough. Are you using a good, strong 12v battery? It has to spin fast.
@ChadDrake4185 I'll give the grinder method a try. Battery is in good shape. I took the starter back out so I can at least pull start it and drive it lol 1963 f600 with a 292
@@PrayludeRecycledParadise alignment or tolerance around the shaft perhaps. I’ve noticed that even when mine sticks, it will unstick itself and it still functions properly once it unsticks. Is yours the same?
My new starter is like the one in the video. Mine isn’t catching the flywheel. It’s spins good when you hit the starter button but just not catching the flywheel. No missing teeth or anything like that. My old starter done the same thing but I just thought it was old and worn out. Any help would be nice. It’s a 41 ford I saved from going to the scrap yard.
@@ChadDrake4185 all stock. The starter is just a aftermarket one. It has the same bendix like the one in the video. I can move it fine it’s not locked and seems to move fine. The old one is the spring style bendix.
@@buddygotchamake sure the bolts on the end of the shaft are long enough. I bought a flathead starter from power master a while back and it just spun and didn’t turn the flywheel. Determined the problem was because one of the bolts holding the bendix to the shaft, was too short. The shaft was spinning in the bendix. Let me know once you check. I’ll think more about your situation to see if I can help.
I’ve tried EVERY METHOD POSSIBLE. I’m not a tool. I’ve rebuilt engines. I CANNOT get this stupid Bendix unlocked. I can’t even get the collar back to punch out the pin. WTF 🤬

Exactly what happened to me. I’m glad it helped you.
THANK YOU for posting this video. Just tried your idea and it worked like a charm.
Awesome! I’m glad to hear this helped someone!
Thank you. I had to do this twice since I must have caught the ring gear on the way in and locked it again.
@@CedarTrailsLiving you’re welcome. Glad it worked out.
Thanks for the video! I got myself in the same pickle with the start on dad's car...😅

Can't get my brand new bendix to retract this way either.

Worked first time thanks. Any ideas to what call Suzette to do that while it’s installed?
I’m happy it worked. But I don’t understand the question. What are you asking? Thanks for the comment!
Sorry! Any ideas to what causes it to stick?
I’ve got a brand new starter and about every other cranks it sticks.
