Bamboo Shark ~ And, it briefly walks!
Back in Lembeh, Inodnesia I was fortunate enough to have my dive guide spot this juvenile brown-banded bamboo shark. This shark belongs to the family Hemiscylliidae and are commonly called epaulette, carpet, or bamboo sharks and are known as the "walking sharks" and you can see a brief walking stink as the shark repositions itself on the mesh debris that it is resting on.

Diving Weekend in Monterey Bay, California - Point Lobos / Whalers Cove / Wharf / Beach Hopper Boat
Переглядів 15821 день тому
I did my very first cold-water dives in Monterey, California in the fall of 2023. It was quite a steep learning curve getting used to the bulkiness of all the extra exposure protection gear you have to wear for cold water diving! But my trusty friends took good care of me and showed me some incredible sights around Monterey. We dove a late afternoon, turned to dusk, dive at the wharf, then had ...
Blue-Ringed Octopus - North Sulawesi Island, Lembeh, Indonesia
Переглядів 33Місяць тому
Back in Lembeh, Indonesia in 2023, I had the good fortune of observing several blue-ringed octopuses. There were incredible to watch when flashing their colors to warn that they have deadly venom called tetrodotoxin. No touchy touch! Group of 7 Spotted Eagle Rays at Mahukona shore dive
Переглядів 81Місяць тому
Made the trek up north to shore dive Mahukona along the Kohala Coast and was lucky enough to see this group of 7 spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) out over the sand channel. With a little kicking (okay, A LOT of kicking!) to catch up to them, I was able to fly over the group. Music from Artlist, license # 749789 Song: I Can Learn to Fly by Ge Filter Fish
Coleman Shrimp on Fire Urchin Symbiosis Living
Переглядів 692 місяці тому
Back in Lembeh, Indonesia my dive guide found a grouping of 6 Variable Fire Urchins (Asthenosoma varium) that had a couple Coleman Shrimp (Periclimenes coleman) living on them. The coleman shrimp and fire urchin live in symbiosis where the vulnerable shrimp gets protection from predators by taking advantage of the host's venom-tipped spines and the urchin is unharmed by the association. A kalei...

This is a continuation of videos from my dive trip to Lembeh, Indonesia in 2023. This video features cuttlefish from 6 different species including the famous flamboyant, broadclub, crinoid, golden, needle and lots of dwarfs. Our guides were excellent at finding them and we got a chance to witness all sorts of behaviors ranging from walking, color changing pulses, camouflage, defensive posture, ...
Snorkeling in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park @ Remote Backcountry Site - Keauhou Bay, Healthy Coral
Переглядів 1062 місяці тому
I planned a backpacking trip deep into the backcountry of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the view at the end of the hike was absolutely stunning! and absolutely made the grueling hike worth it! We arrived at a gorgeous rocky bay that has a natural lava rock break-wall outside the reef which provided a fairly protected area for swimming and snorkeling. From the shoreline you can see all of t...
Mandarin Fish Mating Dance (Synchiropus splendidus) - Spawning on a Night Dive - Lembeh, Indonesia
Переглядів 863 місяці тому
During my 2023 dive trip to Lembeh, Indonesia, being able to watch the nightly mating ritual of mandarin fish was on my bucket list. Like everything else on my trip, NAD nailed it! Our guide set my dive buddy and I up along a group of staghorn coral just before sunset and as it got darker, we could see the normally skittish mandarin fish starting to dart around looking for a mate. I was told th...
Octopus Fighting Showing Signs of Aggressive Behavior - Day Octopus (Octopus cyanea)
Переглядів 2513 місяці тому
After an abnormally rough winter here in Kona, the ocean conditions finally calmed down enough for a safe entry to shore dive again (Hallelujah)!! Initially, I just thought the octopus was hunting along the reef for a quick meal; but I soon saw a second octopus and realized I was witnessing signs of aggression between the two. The aggressive signs were flashing (or bleaching) to an ash white co...
Coconut Octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus) walking, running, and carrying shells - Lembeh, Indonesia
Переглядів 7 тис.3 місяці тому
A fabulous trip to Lembeh Strait, Indonesia in September 2023 provided lots of encounters with coconut octopuses. They were popping out of their home shells, walking backwards back into the shells, and being delightfully entertaining! They also spread their tentacles and carried their shells around - bonus! Enjoy this compilation of a variety of our sightings of the coconut octopus during this ...
Aggregation of Gray Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) - Kona, Hawaii - Baby Grey Sharks!!

I don't get to dive this site often enough! It is one of the very few places I haven't attempted to get to from shore as the current is normally ripping through this area making it very risky to do on my normal paddle-board dive adventures (never say never though!). This site is home to a gray reef shark nursery where lots of juvenile grey sharks aggregate. The topside conditions were beautiful...

Rainbow Nudibranch (Dendronotus iris) feeding on Tube Anemone - Monterey, California November 2023

Ventured over to Monterey Bay, California for my first dip in cold water diving. Stumbled across a couple of these big "Rainbow" nudibranchs (Dendronotus iris) crawling around on the sand. With a little patience, I was able to see one stealthily crawling up a tube anemone, extend its buccal pouch (mouth) and dive into feeding on the tube anemone. Such a cool thing to witness, it's a crazy world...

Planning on doing this. I have a few questions: 1) I saw you guys trapped some prawns, did you bring the prawn trap, or was it already there? And how did it taste like? 2) I am assuming nobody goes there often as it is remote, were you the only ones camping when you stayed? 3) Did it rain at all when you were there? I saw you had a tarp over your hammock. 4) Mosquitos at night? Can you make your bon fire?

Aloha, I actually did another backpacking trip in April 2024 to Waimanu Valley. So here is the up to date info. 1. the prawn trip used to be there, but I did not see it last month, I'd bring your own just in case. 2. Last month there were 4 others on our first night, and then a large group (~10 people) up on a Saturday night. If you want the place to yourself go mid-week. Yes, its the windward side of the island, always plan for rain! Mosquitos are not a problem at the campsite, but are prevalent at the drinking water source waterfall. Yes, each campsite has a campfire area. You need a permit to camp and figure out logistics of how to get down into Waipio Valley. Good luck, happy trails!

Hey, we just returned from a trip to Lembeh and would like to find a muck diving spot to stop off at while travelling on to Palau this summer. Do you have a dive shop you work with who will focus dive trips on macro (along the Kona Coast)?

    • @shoredivingalongthekonacoa6450
      @shoredivingalongthekonacoa6450 3 місяці тому

Aloha! Lembeh and Palau ~ Living the good life 😊🤙🏽. All of the muck diving sites around Kona are done as shore dives so the regular shops don’t necessarily focus on macro specific dives. Your best option is to hire a private guide who is familiar with our Nudi Madness dive site. If you’re familiar with shore diving & navigation you could also just go out on your own.
