Bamboo Shark ~ And, it briefly walks!
Back in Lembeh, Inodnesia I was fortunate enough to have my dive guide spot this juvenile brown-banded bamboo shark. This shark belongs to the family Hemiscylliidae and are commonly called epaulette, carpet, or bamboo sharks and are known as the "walking sharks" and you can see a brief walking stink as the shark repositions itself on the mesh debris that it is resting on.

Back in Lembeh, Indonesia in 2023, I had the good fortune of observing several blue-ringed octopuses. There were incredible to watch when flashing their colors to warn that they have deadly venom called tetrodotoxin. No touchy touch! Group of 7 Spotted Eagle Rays at Mahukona shore dive

Made the trek up north to shore dive Mahukona along the Kohala Coast and was lucky enough to see this group of 7 spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) out over the sand channel. Coleman Shrimp on Fire Urchin Symbiosis Living

Back in Lembeh, Indonesia my dive guide found a grouping of 6 Variable Fire Urchins (Asthenosoma varium) that had a couple Coleman Shrimp (Periclimenes coleman) living on them. I don't get to dive this site often enough! It is one of the very few places I haven't attempted to get to from shore as the current is normally ripping through this area making it very risky to do on my normal paddle-board dive adventures (never say never though!). Ventured over to Monterey Bay, California for my first dip in cold water diving. Stumbled across a couple of these big "Rainbow" nudibranchs (Dendronotus iris) crawling around on the sand. With a little patience, I was able to see one stealthily crawling up a tube anemone, extend its buccal pouch (mouth) and dive into feeding on the tube anemone. This was a shore dive off Honokohau Harbor.
Planning on doing this. I have a few questions: 1) I saw you guys trapped some prawns, did you bring the prawn trap, or was it already there? And how did it taste like? 2) I am assuming nobody goes there often as it is remote, were you the only ones camping when you stayed? 3) Did it rain at all when you were there? I saw you had a tarp over your hammock. 4) Mosquitos at night? Can you make your bon fire?
Aloha, I actually did another backpacking trip in April 2024 to Waimanu Valley. So here is the up to date info. 1. the prawn trip used to be there, but I did not see it last month, I'd bring your own just in case. 2. Last month there were 4 others on our first night, and then a large group (~10 people) up on a Saturday night. If you want the place to yourself go mid-week. Yes, its the windward side of the island, always plan for rain! Mosquitos are not a problem at the campsite, but are prevalent at the drinking water source waterfall. Yes, each campsite has a campfire area. You need a permit to camp and figure out logistics of how to get down into Waipio Valley. Good luck, happy trails!

Aloha! For Kona side, most locals prefer Kona Honu Divers, Aquatic Life Divers, or Pacific Rim. That being said, all of the charter companies are pretty highly rated and should give you a good experience. The manta ray night dive and the blackwater dives are a must do while on island - truly unique experiences! Hope you have a great trip!
I live in Hilo now. Did you dive all around the island? I’ve only found one species of nudibranch there? Recommended entry and route to follow?
@@MrNicholaslarghiyes, I dive all over the Big Island. If I can get to the waters edge, I’m thinking about how to get in and out with dive gear on! For this Coconut Island dive, we hopped in off the rocks at the northern tip and set a compass heading going towards the rocky outcropping. Happy exploring!

The Honokohau Harbor dive site maxes out at about 105-110’. But this video was shot mostly in the 20-80’ range

Hey, we just returned from a trip to Lembeh and would like to find a muck diving spot to stop off at while travelling on to Palau this summer. Do you have a dive shop you work with who will focus dive trips on macro (along the Kona Coast)?
Aloha! Lembeh and Palau ~ Living the good life 😊🤙🏽. All of the muck diving sites around Kona are done as shore dives so the regular shops don’t necessarily focus on macro specific dives. Your best option is to hire a private guide who is familiar with our Nudi Madness dive site. If you’re familiar with shore diving & navigation you could also just go out on your own.

Lava beds?
Coral dying?
I didn’t film any coral in this video, but there are some big healthy antler corals here. The sharks aggregate in a canyon formed from the old lava flow in 1801.
