THERE ARE ALWAYS MORE ISSUES THAN YOU PLANNED ON / ONE STEP FORWARD THREE STEPS BACK
This week we begin our assembly of the Cow Pie Transmission and, as usually, nothing wants to go smooth. Big John drops by and we get a chance to discuss where its at and were we got to go. I tried to salvage as much as I could, to make the pain a little easier, but good intentions do not always work out and some times things just cannot be saved. Check us out as we give you an update around the shop, get at this transmission, and have a great visit with a good friend. Thanks for all the support!

NOW SHE'S OUT/ SEALING UP THE PRIMARY / MACHINING 4TH GEAR
Переглядів 2,1 тис.22 години тому
There are many steps to take to getting things to seal up tight and right. Plugging the holes on the primary and doing a bit of machining on 4th gear and it should be the end of your leaking problems. The old 4 speeds need some work but they are tough transmissions and will last for years if they are assembled right. Hope you enjoy! Thanks for all the support! Thanks for visiting our channel. “...

    My 80' shovelhead engine has an evolution S camshaft. Is there a difference in lift or crossover with respect to the correct camshaft? I think the correct one is H. right?! I bought it working like this, making its noises but due to bouncers with play in the blocks and when disassembling I found it, is there a risk with that tree?! Thank you if you answer me, Ralph.

    • @itsmytimeletsgo
      @itsmytimeletsgo 15 годин тому

      You are crorect that the H grind is a stock shovelhead camshaft. I do not think the evo cams would work properly as the rocker arm ratio for evos is different than shovels, changing the lifts. Evo rocker arms are t 1.62 I believe when shovel ones are at 1.43. That might have created some of your problems. Not sure what you mean by risk with the tree. Thanks for commenting.

    • @ioriochoppers1031
      @ioriochoppers1031 13 годин тому

      @@itsmytimeletsgo I meant: if the camshaft changes with respect to the original and that the evolution one causes that knock between valves to occur at the moment of the crossing that you show in the video. At some point everything inside the box broke and they replaced it with what they got, an evolution S camshaft and a plastic gear for the re-jacketed ventilation and whoever put it together put the hydraulic lifters with the hole in lubrication facing outward, which means that they do not lubricate and take play in the original cast block. I don't really like what I have but I assure you it worked. I couldn't hear it properly but the engine was running. Tanks ralph nice you works motorcycles!

    Another great video. However, at 27:33, I'd be concerned with cutting an o-ring groove in the shaft. Removing material reduces the strength of a vital part. If the shaft were solid, I'd be less concerned, but the groove will reduce the remaining cross sectional area of the shaft, which will raise the stress level on it. Although I understand that this is how Andrews(sp=?) reportedly does theirs, I assume that they have done their analysis and know what they can get away with. Additionally, depending on how sharp the edges of the bottom of the groove are, will concentrate stresses on that shaft in one area and increase the likelihood of the shaft shearing in two. Although that o-ring groove appears to be shallower than the depth of the splines, the stresses on splines are spread along the length of each spline. That, and the fact that the spline groves have a more gentle ramp to the full shaft diameter at the inner end make is less likely to fail in that area. I hope I'm worried about nothing, but just felt I should mention it. Again, thanks for sharing these videos.

    • @itsmytimeletsgo
      @itsmytimeletsgo 7 днів тому

      Glad you enjoyed the video. I have done lots of them with no problems. I never seen one break thus far. When I cut the groove I do not cut sharp edges, instead I make it more rounded, like the "O" ring, so as not to create a stress point. Remember that these gears already have a groove in them, in that exact spot, with sharp edges, when they are stock. I am just opening it up a bit and rounding the edges instead of leaving the sharp one that is there. Most of these old machines are not torchered, like the new ones, and people drive them accordingly. No reving it up and dropping the clutch so to speak. But there are always concerns for sure. I use a very small "O" ring as well. I know it looks pretty big on video closeups. Thanks for the input and commenting.

      @@itsmytimeletsgo Yes for sure . The problem is than, here in France, there is maybee two or three people who can work like you do on this box . And even if i decide to give my box to do to anybody here, that will cost the same price than a brand new gear box .

      No I do not think so but do not know for sure. I don't know if there would be enough room for the lever to work. It is designed for 1965 to 1984 BT and 1980 to 1988 Softails as I understand it. Thanks for commenting.

      @itsmytimeletsgo 13 днів тому

      You have to have a starter relay. The wire goes to the #86 terminal on the relay. If you email me at ralph@itsmytimeletsgo I can send you a pic of the wiring diagram. Thanks for the question and commenting.

    I have a three-finger clutch hub and two of the threaded studs or rods coming outward that hold the steels and the clutch material. They're slightly bent can they be bent back so that the plates move freely or is that something that it's the clutch hub is shot

    • @itsmytimeletsgo
      @itsmytimeletsgo 13 днів тому

      You can replace the fingers with new ones but if they are bent, or have grooves in them its time for replacement of the hub. Thanks for commenting.

    • @itsmytimeletsgo
      @itsmytimeletsgo 13 днів тому

      Yes there are different strength springs, often set by different colors. Not sure right now which are which but they usually state that before buying. I have found that many times the heavy springs are a bit to much and they give you a harder pull than a person would like. Thanks for commenting.

      @@itsmytimeletsgo yeah most of the stuff I get is used so it's kind of a gamble. But I used stock springs and some red springs The red springs came in the 1980 when I got it but it was really pull really hard to pull the clutch in. So I alternated stock which I had a bunch of and the red ones it seems to work out pretty good
