Thanks Ralph, this video jogged my memory!! Lol. Used to do both the generator shovels as well as the cones. I've been messing with these new fangled twin cams for a little while. My favorites are definitely the cones.
Ralph thank you so much for mentioning our Merch custom 1999 and you showed the front page of the magazine. You almost knocked me off our couch. I woke my wife up show her your video. Thanks again.
No problem Alex. beautiful bike and I did appreciate the pics and video. I always like to see what others are doing, or have done, and give credit where credit is due. Some time, effort , and money went into your build. Just wanted to share it with others. All the best. Thanks for commenting.
Great vlog once again , it's very helpful getting your knolage Ralph, as I live in a pretty remote part of the planet in rural south australia , and information and tricks for working on my 1986 fxstc is always appreciated , unlike Canada, and the usa , there are very few people that know much about these bikes of ours down here , so ,thank u 👍✌
You are more than welcome and big thanks for letting me know where you are from, as I find that so interesting and still blows my mind of how far Yout Tube reaches. Thats about the only place on the planet that I have not been to and always say "if i won a million bucks I would like to go to Australia! Have a good friend that moved over there many years ago. He had a nice little custom I did a lot of work on and he shipped it over with him. Loves it there and plans to stay. Thanks for commenting.
Ralph- I'm really grateful to have found this channel. I have '79 fxef 80ci that is so similar to this bike. I know I will be referring to this particular video in the future. Great explanation of cam cover differences. The service manual for this era (even my '03 twin cam) have limited information which is key to successful maintenance and repairs. Thank you for work! Respect from Texas
Sorry for your loss but glad you figured it out! Knew ya would! Would you mind sharing the music list for this video. Couple cool songs Thank you. Pretty sure we all learn something from ya 👍🏻👍🏻
So glad I can be of help. You have to pay attention to these things as it is the "life blood" of you motor . One little mistake can cause a lot of grief. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks for the kind words. I am not always right but I try my best to pass on what I have learned though the years, and value others input. Never to old to learn. Thanks for commenting.
Excellent video, i really enjoy the technical parts you get into, many channels miss that part. Looking forward to the basketcase shovel. Excellent as always.
Just trying to pass on what little I know, no need to hide secrets from others, and hope I am helping some out there in keeping these old machines going forever. Should be starting on the basket case next week I hope. Thanks for commenting.
Time is at a premuim this time of year, its summenr time man! Time to get out and ride all we can. I have the same problem trying to catch up on things. Thanks, it is always appreciated!
Thanks Tbone and you are more than welcome. Just hoping I can help others keep these machines going for many years, after I am gone. Thanks for commenting.
You aren't the only channel I watch when it comes to working on Harley Davidsons. The oiling system for some reason seems to be a constant source of problems?
Great video Ralph. When i rebuild a shovel i most often end up putting a new S&S pump on, i still check the old pump like you do but most often it needs a new one. Can not count the number of cone shovel's that have been in my shop with wrong gasket.
I like to use the S&S pump when I can but they are over $700.00 up here so sometimes money becomes a factor for some people, me included. ha ha Yes the wrong gasket is a common problem. Anyone who runs a shop has probably seen it a few times through the years. Hopefully this will save a few people probelms in the future. Thanks for commenting.
If you haven't found her channel let Red Rider has some good content. Sometimes they do some indepth work on her old shovel. She is north of the border also, judging by your accent. lol She is in Okenogin BC. You mentioned the oil catch can , Red Rider has a catch can on her kick only shovel.
I have seen her channel as well. Always interested in what others are doing, and maybe she has this problem and maybe this will help her out hopefully. It is at least something she might look into. And yes I am in Canada, east coast, to so the accent is probably the same. Thanks for commenting.
70-72 is a side oiler and the latter is an end oiler pinion . Have to know what you have before using the cover you think is correct . I have a 72 and somewhere in the last 52 years it was switched to an end oiler pinion shaft and uses the later shovel early evo cover .
Thanks I did not get into pinion shafts etc as that is another area of discussion. Just trying to point some differences out to help those who may pick up cam covers at swap meets, or from their buddies etc. Quick visual check can save some grief in the end. But thanks for sharing the pinion info for others. Thanks for commenting.
Yes you are correct in the manual, although I have seen it the other way also in new pumps, and many explain with it installed the other way to keep return feed from bleeding into the feed cavity. Might have just got a bit ahead of myself there, I am not an expert, and can make mistakes, but have had no problems thus far. Thanks for pointing that out though and I will metion it in the description. Thanks for commenting.
Hey Ralph, great video once again! I got a question for you, on my shovel (79) wit a 1975 FL Glide front end, Im experiencing a lot of up and down movement in the sliders ( very little damping goin on) I changed the fork oil, per the manual, cant remember the weight right off the top of my head. But it didnt seem to help it. What do you suggest doing, or is their something I can try (heavier weight oil) , or something, before disassembling the tubes and sliders. Any help greater appreciated, thanks and take er easy 🤘
Hello Terry. I'm not right up on front end stuff but you could check the preload on the springs at the top how much they stick out.I think in most cases it should be about 3/4 of an inch. You could put a "little" longer spacer in there to help stiffen it up a bit. But old springs just get worn out and often need to be upgraded, many miles on the old girls. I always use at leat 20 fork oil in my stuff and it seems to help a bit. Great to see you with Hippie on Slicks video this week. You gotta start some where and it is a grind on You Tube but very satifying in the end. All the best and Thanks for commenting.
@@itsmytimeletsgo Thanks for the input Ralph! I'm thinking she's probably worn out, just thought I'd pick your brain before I tear it down. That'll be a winter project, I'm having too much fun riding her this Summer! Had a great time with Hippie and his family! Super people! Have a great day bro! Thanks 🤘
Great video Ralph very informative. I learned a lot!!! quick question. What do you think contributed to that pump being warped like that? Do you think it’s just an aftermarket oil pump problem? Have you ever encountered a stock OEM Harley Davidson oil pump with this situation? 👍🍺 SLICK
Thanks Slick. I think someone, at some time, probabaly sanded the body surfaces down for some reason to clean them up and took off a few thousands more that they should have. Have never encountered another OEM one like this. Just my luck ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
I order parts from distributors up here in Canada. They don't sell retail. But there are lots of parts companies in the US. Drag Specialties, Mid USA etc. Check with your local shops. Thanks for commenting.
Great video ,I have a 2003 fatboy that's been kept in house it's hole life but rode around every week it only has 13.000 miles on it would you check cam chain tensioners or ride it ,I have only owned it for a month engine runs great and no noise from cams just wondering, thanks .
It never hurts to have them checked. I have seen them bad at 16,000 miles, and seen them good at 40,000 miles . There is no real rhyme or reason as to when they will go. Thanks for commenting.
Thats Hippie. I think so as well and after this weeks coming video I am pretty sure even the skeptics will have to agree. Its what I expected but wait till you see it so far ha ha Thanks for commenting Brother!
Say brom Ive got a 73 ith an S&S pump thats not pumping correctly, been watching lots of vids and saw one s&s that says both the small gears on both sides should gaged with, like you did with a .003 hight above the surface for gasket , not 003 & 007 that you were getting to high according to S&S in the vid guy had a new pump, cant see how it was out and over height, from wear. but they come from factory with the .003 under stright edge on both sides , both sides of pump all 4 gears measured the way you were doing it, can easily see that .007 on one side would be the high gear and bind, maybe you can find the vidieo.
The pimp I had I think someone tried to fix up the surfaces by sanding the body down but it got uneven on one side. Only thing I could think that would do that. If you are having problems, and everything measures out right, you might check, and replace, the oil seal as when they get worn out they allow oil to transfer from the feed to the return side. Also make sure the slide in the tall tower is free and not sticking in there restricting flow to the bottom end. S&S are generally very good pumps. Good luck. Thanks for commenting.
Hi Ralph. Have a 2000 Indian Gilroy era with a S&S engine with external oil pump my problem is it leak oil from bottom engine breather crank case I replace oil check ball and spring and still leaking what do you think or suggest.
Make sure that there are no restriction in any of your oil lines, to and from oil filter etc. If the crankcase breather hose has any kink, or bend, it can cause that. Thats pretty basic but it can be a number of reasons. Blow by from pistons causing to much pressure in the crankcase, it can be the Breather gear / hole bad as well. Quite a few variables, that I do try to cover in some of the videos. Sometimes I have seen guys change air breather assemblies, and put bolts in the head breather holes. You see all kinds of things. In any case I do not have a quick and easy answer for you. You could also check the small filter before your lifters, to the upper left of the cam cover, to see if its plugging up or has any metal or grindings in it. It sort of gives you a bit of a mini window on whats happening in the motor oil. In any case I do not have a quick and easy answer for you. Excess oil out there indicates a pressure problem of some sort. You can always drop me an email at ralph@itsmytimeletsgo if you have further questions. Thanks for the question, others might chime it. Thanks for commenting.
Lol had a guy come to my shop 15 years with a 1956 panhead , custom build STD engine case ,lol billet oil pump billet cam cover ,no oil pressure,so take it apart cam cover ok oil off ok right year oil pump , problem was std engine cases oil hole was not drill through enough!,merch lol I build the first 131 merch before they when into production in 1995 , they were so scared too run a 4 .250 back then terry merch lol ,made my own billet cast iron barrels
