Hey Ralph i commented before about how i went to AMI in 82'. You do things the way i do. Saw You got a good comment from Pacific Mike, that's like a youtube oscar. Like your channel.
We are both old school it seems, you were just a few years ahead of me going to AMI. Yes when Pacific Mike subbed up it made my day!! Thanks for commenting.
Great video Ralph. I really enjoyed watching it and it looks like the algorithm is liking as well. Good job on 5k views. That's huge for a long form video man
Ralph i F’in loved this video !!! It was so cool seeing you get out on one of your bikes and enjoying yourself, we need more content like this from you!!! 👍 oh and one other thing i wish i had hair that my primary turning over could blow all around like a sexy heart throb in a trashy women’s novel !!!! LUCKY!!! 😂😂 👍🍺 SLICK
HA ha. Thanks Slick. I do get out some so thought I would just stick a little in there, like you. Ya hair is getting long, and in my face. Due for a trim next week ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
Hey Ralph, I had a similar issue with my Merch 120. I had to replace the starter the solenoid and the voltage regulator.. Hopefully, I’ll get the bike back tomorrow. I only put 40 miles on it since I bought it in January.
yes, happened to me multiple times. Replaced it exactly like you did. Is that a BDL or Gates belt. My BDL belt snapped on me. My 93" shovelhead has some torque. I put a Primo Rivera clutch in her. Is that an FXE?
for me it was copper contact inside the solenoid. they just get so pitted that they won't pass enough current. a less expensive repair than the entire unit. those 7/16" socket heads are a bitch. i replaced mine with allen head bolts, easier to get an extended allen socket back there. also, it's very easy to cross thread those suckers
Thanks for letting others know your experience. I just like to put things on new if I am going to sell something. Good trick with the allen bolts. Thanks for commenting.
@@itsmytimeletsgo Ya I kinda thought that when you removed the basket and hub together . I also added the Tamer unit in there as well . Harley never made clutch unit for the shovel ...
Great video, Ralph! I like that Primary cover piece you made. I may have to make me one. Is that a BDL belt drive. My 83 has a BDL, but mine has a belt tensioner.
They are really handy Ed as you can get a good look inside at what is going on when you crank her over. Make one and you will be surprized how much you will use it. I do believe it is a BDL drive. The early ones did have the tensioner as I recall. Thanks for commenting Ed.
I thought when this video started, I would finally understand what a Bendix drive did. Okay I got that. But what is the part that you replaced? It doesn't look like a part that would wear?
When you are 70 come back and tell me what you think then. ha ha The Frankenstein trike kits are great. I have a bad back from stuff I did in the early years, new bikes are to heavy, and the trike lets me ride all day. Had one back in the early 80's as well and really enjoy them. Thanks for commenting.
Had this happen to you? Let us know your experiences. Like and leave us a comment.
That’s a great looking shovel
Thanks. Not to many of them left around. Thanks for commenting.

Who am I to argue that fact .. ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
I also picked up a 81 FXS recently. Took a lot of work to make it correct and safe.
Nice. Just finishing up on mine now. Thanks for commenting.

Glad you ejoyed it. Thanks for commenting.
Good to have the knowledge to fix these things!!!!
Thanks Tbone. Been fooling with them since the eary 70's and you have to learn a few things to keep them running. ha haThanks for commenting.
Great video Ralph. I really enjoyed watching it and it looks like the algorithm is liking as well. Good job on 5k views. That's huge for a long form video man
Yes got lucky on this one Hip. Thanks for commenting.
@itsmytimeletsgo it wasn't luck man. The algorithm is telling us what people will watch. Kudos bro. It was a good one
Thanks .. means a lot Hip. Have a great holiday weekend!!
It must feel awesome to know how to work on these bikes. It looks like an art form
To avoid the solenoid problems, i have put a pull start instead. And the starter, is now an All balls. That moove well the pistons.
Great idea. They seem to do the job. I use a lot of All Balls stuff. Thanks for comenting.
my 83 dual belt shovel same colour etc nice
Nice!! Thanks for commenting.
Very good video , I liked the trick on loosening the starter solenoid to get the bendix out . Great to know for sure . Thank you .
Sometimes it 's just the little things that can make your life a little easier. Thanks for commenting.
Great looki g Shovel Ralph. Im starting a ground-up on my 83 as soon as i can find some time (and get air conditioning in my shop)
Thanks, that sounds like a great project. Hoefully the channel may be able to help you out with some things. Thanks for commenting.
Looks even better out in the sun.
Could be your bendix drive as well if it's grinding. Thanks for commenting.
Check the gear in your starter same thing happened to me😊
It seems to be fine now, but thanks for the suggestion and comment.
I have the lever solenoid bypass too - haven't installed yet. Can you do a video on that install process?
Looks like you found the video that you needed to install it. Thanks for commenting.

help full info for all us thank ralph for taking th time, what length are those shock ?
Glad you are enjoying it, shocks are11 inch eye to eye. Thanks for commenting.
The music fits.
Thanks I spend a lot of time putting the music in, as I believe it adds to the video, but alway nice to hear some enjoys it.Thanks for commenting.
Thanks for the video. Which strength of loctite do you use for your motor sprocket nut, red or blue? Thanks again
I use Red. Thanks for commenting.

Not sure on the belt, I'm thinking it;s BDL. Big torque often brings it's own set of problems in the drive train. Thanks for commenting.
Did I hear you say you were getting ready to sell that beauty ? That would be hard to part with. It's a beautiful bike, unmolested.
Yes but making sure it is all right and proper before I do. And want to enjoy it a bit myself. Thanks for commenting.

You didn't say but does this bike have the big bearing set on the clutch basket / hub ?? I had one on my 82 FXRS and what a difference ...
Yes it does have the "Big Fix" in it. I use the long bearings in most cases now. Thanks for commenting.
@@itsmytimeletsgo Ya I kinda thought that when you removed the basket and hub together . I also added the Tamer unit in there as well . Harley never made clutch unit for the shovel ...
Ran some Tamer's in the early years as well. I think we all tried everything we could to get a better clutch. Thanks for commenting.

They lose their ability to lock in one direction, for starting. Then they will make that sound if not engauged. Thanks for commenting.
Is that an FXE?
Yes it is. Thanks for the question and commenting.
Sounds way better than my 82 shovel mine makes a grinding sound when I hit button so I just kick it lol
Could be your bendix causing that grinding sound. Thanks for commenting.
🏍️👍👋👋
Thanks for that Moe!
I don't get the whole trike thing? To each his own.
