  • There are always more things to do when you are working with a "Basket Case" bike that's 46 years old. Tearing it down and figuring out what you can save, and what is trash, can be a good feeling, or bad news all around. But I am determined to bring Margaret back to life so it is what it is. You feel good when you can rebuild something, and see the dollars out the window when you can't. Join us on our journey as we try to bring her back to life!

Now I used 45% vinegar I got in the jungle site. I left it too long in my tanks and the little pipe that goes underneath to the other tank just rotted right off..
Somebody had put sealer on top of rust in this shovelhead tanks I got with my bike so I mean they're trash but I thought I'd try it but you do after not let it sit too long mine was like a couple days

An old tractor mechanic buddy of mine told me about this mix many years ago. To try to get seized pistons out of cast iron cylinders so that they will loosen up. Sometimes this will work 50% acetone to 50% Type F Ford Automatic transmission fluid mixed in a spray bottle. Spray the solution around the piston rings and the walls of the jugs and let it soak. Better than liquid wrench, much better it's just an idea that might help you.

Great video bud reminds me of my first dirt track race-car engine. Small block Chevy laid in a shed for years with no heads. Had to soak cylinders with PB blaster for a week. Got some of them to move enough to get rods undone and crank out. We had to use a 4x4 with the corners trimmed and a sledge to drive most of the pistons out. Believe it or not we honed the cylinders new pistons and rings and ran that motor my first season. We didn’t have much money and had to do what we needed to. You take care and ride safe.

I bought an ultrasonic cleaner about a year ago and have good effect with WD-40 in breaking things loose with it. Works well with lube or with vinegar getting down in the crevices. My dentist gave me some "worn out dental tools" which work well in holes and grooves.

Add 1 part kerosene or diesel to that and it’s an OLD , tried and true armorers formula called “ Ed’s red”. It’s been around for a very long time. You can mix the diesel and trans fluid anytime, add the acetone at time of use to for safety and to stop evaporation.
