I saw an interview with WW1 veterans taken in the 60s. They asked one old soldier if fighting in the first world war had been worth it. The old soldier emphatically answered 'NO!'. He said if he had his time again there is no way he would have volunteered for the war. But back then many young men volunteered for the war, but they had been sold a lie. This old soldier said the things that him and his army mates went through was utter hell. He said those that survived all thought it was not worth it. This soldier believed that absolutely nothing was achieved in WW1 except the brutal slaughter of a generation of young men.

I came across this series of videos about a month ago and have been looking for them, ever since. One of the most riveting and intense tellings of warfare I've ever heard. There are like 3-4 of these series that really struck something deep down.... being a prior modern day soldier, I have a slight understanding of warfare and combat. Albeit, I've never engaged a tank or had air forces rain hell down on me... I've never been out numbered some 11 to 1 and pushed on my back foot, torn between the uselessness of mine and mine comrades effort and the need to do something, to defend my homeland from the hell that has been brought down on it. What do you do in that situation? "It don't seem right to give up the fight, but it doesn't make sense to try". And that is the end side of the campaign... this is after surviving the most insane, brutal, violent military actions that had ever and hopefully, will ever, (though sadly, I somehow doubt it,) scar this planet, for possibly years. Can you imagine pushing into the Soviet Union, feeling that victory was at hand, to spend a year fighting, killing, watching your comrades dying, each day, everyone with you, including you, basically playing "shortest straw" with the gods, to see who pulls the short straw, and thus, meets their end, which most likely, will be horrible, morbid, and one of the worse ends that a living thing can come to. You go through years of this, just to be routed, pushed back, lose all ground, and invoke the wrath of the Soviet People and The Red Army on your homeland, the women... the children... (as you did to their people, though, I guess.. it's always more dreadful when you're the victim or the one facing wrath). What an absolutely fucking insane thing to have lived through... or just lived long enough to take a part in. War is hell and The Eastern Front in WW2 is the gold standard of that hell, for sure.

The author fails to tell how the Alpini saved his Nazis after they failed to be able to break through after their screw up at Stalingrad. It was the Italians that took a heavy Soviet strongpoint.

If you're going to use copyrighted material you should at least list the author and book at each video so that people can go out and buy the book themselves. I know some of these are from smaller diaries and they're not copyrighted but a lot of them are from books that the author had to take time to create and should thus be compensated.

lol some comments about the accounts being fictional... honestly, the best accounts along this line that I have come across always seem to be. Another example, I cannot remember the full name of the author, or his first book, but his second was called "The Last Panther" where he was a Panther Commander that found himself south of Berlin during the Soviet's Assault, and himself and a couple other Panthers, a couple King Tigers, and an assortment of Hetzels and Panzer-Grenadiers were attempting to fight across the autobahn and make their way to Elbe, in order to surrender to the Americans instead of finding themselves at the mercy of the Soviets and all the horror that would bring. The author and narrator was a Feldwebel named "Faust" and he had a LT in another Panther with him, which he and his men called "The Coppo". There is another book of his, where he is on the Eastern Front, and they take a Female Soviet Communications Officer prisoner (and he interacts with her a good bit). I never did learn the title of those stories, or book... would love to find out so I could purchase them. Really enjoyed reading it all those years ago. Good stuff... This series is right up there with them... some are just not that interesting and a lot of naming units and specific officers and such, but nothing all too interesting really is described (or the exciting parts are passed over quickly, not at all like this story and the one I mention, where the attention to details are very interesting)
