I don't quite understand what is admirable about serving in German naval forces in a war of aggression, initiated by Germany, that slaughtered tens of millions of people. Even when all evidence... including the destruction of German cities, the deaths of loved ones and comrades, and reports of Allied advances on every front... should have told this man that the leaders of his nation had lied, and had badly miscalculated in starting the war in the first place, he still believed their lies. Even if he knew nothing else about the decidedly-evil character of the regime he served (a questionable assumption), he should absolutely have recognized that it was driving much of the world into death and ruin, by that time... yet he continued to follow the orders of that regime, and persisted in efforts to kill and destroy, on their behalf. I do not question that he exhibited courage, but I don't see courage, in the service of such a regime, to be admirable.
METOX: Actually, the British had changed the Frequency to "microwave" wavelengths. The Germans trying to figure out what was happening found that one of the Amplifiers did send out a very weak radio signal and assumed (ASS-U-ME-d) that was how Coastal Command (and the US Catalinas) wee tracking their U-Boasts
Metox also emitted a weak signal, a property common to many radio receivers, especially superheterodyne receivers. In an indirect way, this had serious consequences. In the spring of 1943, the U-boats suffered badly because of the introduction by the British of a 10cm ASV radar. But a captured British officer told the Germans that their misfortunes were caused by the transmission of Metox, which were detected by Coastal Command aircraft. After verifying that this was technically possible, the Germans believed the story. This delayed the introduction of Naxos by some months, during which the U-boats suffered heavy losses.
i love this series..i live on the east coast of virginia and have done a scuba dive on the U 352 in north carolina..swam inside the conning tower in 115 ft of water off morehead city..
I could not Imagine being on that ship in that big bad sea. Not to mention everyone trying to destroy you. Or even worse losing power and going to the bottom slowly. My God. War is Hell. Pure uncut Hell.
It played a part. But the information from the Enigma had to be carefully used so as to not give the secret away. The new radar, and radio detection systems combined to aircraft coverage was responsible for the majority.
There is an old story (I can't vouch for it, but it is a good story nonetheless) that the Brits and Americans were able to figure out the logic of how the German wolfpacks worked, but could not predict where the Italian submarines were going to be operating.
Tactial analysis, HF-DF, Ultra, Hedgehog, Sonar, acoustic torpedoes, long range heavy aircraft, convoys, radar, HK groups, escort (sea and air) production volume, the Uboat was quickly relegated from major threat to the sidelines... and yet it continued to be resourced on the basis of its earlier acheivements.
Another dedicated German serving his country. Incredible ingenious capture and cracking of the enigma code caused the demise of many German U-boats, reaping the same destruction they had caused.
Another excellent episode! Also interesting - it shows a thoroughly decent fellow, part of a huge war machine, with cognitive dissonance - resentment of the destruction of German cities without, at present, being aware that he was as responsible as the "tommies" and their friends in pressing the bomb releases. Trying to starve a society into submission will always have consequences. Waiting for the next chapter.......
Unfortunately for those dear dead departed 😇 submariners. Admiral doughnuts 🍩 refused to accept the fact that Bletchley park broke the enigma code. Due to his arrogant disposition.
Germany had so many high expense weapons that, in retrospect were too expensive for the results, V2 missiles, most late war german heavy tanks, and the jet and rocket fighters, Germanys battleships and 11 inch armed ships. Germany spent WW II doing R&D for the Allies. Even had they perfected most of the technologies they pursued, they would not have been a difference maker. Had they slowed us down, it would have just meant Germany would have been atomic bombed, rather than Japan.
Goring was always about Goring. He didn't care about Nazi ideology but used it to solidify his position with Hitler. He then used his position to enrich himself.
This is like reading a novel. I couldn't stop listening, and so greatly admiring this man.

You are a gentleman and a scholar.
What is metox, btw?
@@bottlethrower1544 It's the radar detector that they believed was giving away their locations, apparently an allied deception.

When U realize the death of an unassisted dive,U wonder did any escape out that conning tower?
yes quite a few lived and were captured including the captain@@markhonerbaum3920
Ten seconds in, having never heard your content, I hit subscribe.
Metox was not the problem in itself the issue was the allies were using a search radar with a higher frequency than the Metox could detect.

Nothing like listening to ww2 stories while ww3 ramps up.

The refueller/replenishment UBs were only about 10 or 11 in total and all were eventually sunk by the Allies by the end of 1943/early 1944.
Sounds like Gaza.
Is this account from Herbert Werners "Iron Coffins"?

To who? All of the Nazi leaders could be considered to be traitors.
To a certain extent, he was set up by Hitler’s secretary. And fell for it.
