Which Budget Multitrack Audio Recorder Should You Buy? Handy vs Mixer vs Multitracker
I often get asked, "Should I buy _____ type of multitracker recorder?" It's hard for me to answer that question because everyone has individual musical recording needs. So instead of trying to identify the one specific model that might work for you, this video will at least attempt to help steer you to the TYPE of multitrack recording device that will work best for you. Here I cover the pros and cons of handy recorders versus hybrid mixing boards versus true multitrack recording units. I also cover the somewhat unique Zoom R4 and 1010 Bluebox.

ZOOM R20 - using all the inputs with TRS to XLR cables (applies to many mixing boards too)
After watching your videos I finally pulled the trigger and picked one up. Beat choice I ever made. This is exactly what I needed to hook up my Move, MPC One, EP-133, and SP404mk2 seamlessly to enjoy them all together. Thanks for the detailed videos, I learned so much before I even got it, so it feels so easy.
I need 4 tracks of good bit resolution, an e.q. and a metronome. My guitar modeler has a tuner, effects and all the rest. I can use outside gear for my voice aswell. I don't want a built in drum machine, or a synthesizer. Ill buy a better one. This market is for musicians who want to capture ideas quickly and overdubbing is a great way to hear how the parts will fit. Musicians can capture ideas and share their vision for a song with other creative people. Serious engineers are going to use a Daw. That is just a fact. Give songwriters what we want. No menus. No extra features, and it doesn't have to be wallet sized. I want to be able to see the knobs. For the sake ending frustration, we don't all want to be studio engineers. No menues, a clutter free layout, no extra features, and big enough not to get lost between two couch cushions. Seriously, they lost the plot again.
You can't overdub because this device is aimed to podcasting, not recording and composing songs. I think it's meant to be used live, with later capability of editing individual tracks to publish a polished product. It's clearer if you think of podcasting with a camera. In this case overdubbing really makes no sense.
I think this device can definitely work for podcasting, but it's not necessarily ideal for it because there are only 2 XLR inputs and only one headphone out. I think it's best suited to synth musicians who have several instruments that feature 1/4" outputs who want an easy way to multitrack record and actually get dry individual tracks that they can mix and edit later on a computer, along with the full stereo master WAV file for reference.
I had retired my old Zoom R8 because the inputs had become unusably noisy. However, picked up a tip about using an oil spray to clean them and it worked a trick and brought the device back to life. Have been struggling with Cubase but it’s just so damn complex. Going back to my old device is such a blast.
Yeah, I've used Cubase and several other DAWs. They are great if you can invest the time in getting to learn them. But to me, nothing beats the immediately accessible and "fun" way of recording with these dedicated, stand alone devices.
Almost impulse bought this. But after some research i think it’s a little too clunky. Great idea though.
Definitely not for everyone. But for a specific subset of people it can be 4 or 5 stars. Just depends on what your needs are.
Can you record an instrument part to the pad and then play it while recording a second instrument in order to build a multi part track to build a song. Just thinking of a way to build a multi instrument track playing one instrument at a time. Just wondering.
Thank you for this really interesting detail on L6. It definitely helps for purchasing.
Happy to help!
My R12 is in the post, so thanks for this. It may amuse you to hear that as an oldarse with no mobile phone, I'd never heard of a touchscreen stylus until now. Luckily for me there are plenty of UA-cam vids on how to make one from a cotton bud and aluminium foil !
I made a video about the stylus usage for the R20, but it's the same for the R12. It works well, just be sure to get the type that I describe here: ua-cam.com/video/lwf71awiqmg/v-deo.html
Hi Gaz, I hope all is well! I'm one of those synthesizer guys too, and like you, I started with the Roland VS 890. Unfortunately, my CDR recorder no longer works, and the company that made them went out of business. So, I need a new Digital Multitrack Recorder that can handle everything from recording and arranging to built-in effects (basic, like the VS 890), bouncing (virtual tracks), and mastering. Given that I primarily use synthesizers and drum machines (MPC Live 2, Roland MC 909, JP 8000, MC 09, etc.) and 2 Android apps: Koala Sampler and FL Studio Mobile, what unit would you recommend? Thank you very much for your help. Best regards, R
I have boss br 800, it is one of the best.
It's a classic. And it comes with BOSS effects too, which is a nice bonus.
Good tip there mate. Thank you.

I'm really interested in buying this zoom l6 but first i would like to know if we can consider its audio quality (pre, latency, a/d converters etc) at the same level of the various audio interfaces now in the market ( audient , focusrite etc) . thank u so much in advance
What SD card do you recommend?
Zoom lists some compatible SD cards on their support page, but I've never had a problem with any cards. You can get a cheap class 10 V30 card and it'll definitely work. I suggest at least getting 32GB. But you probably don't need more than 64 or 128GB.
@ ok thanks for the info!

Anybody here have the L6? What’s the noice floor like??

Hi Gaz. Just wondering if I can use the effects on live instrument tracks during sequence playback. Thanks for a great video btw!
If you go to the 5:20 mark in this video you see a little bit about effects. Yes, you can apply effects, but you need to set them up ahead of time for each project (song) to the inputs/tracks where you want them.
@@GazRendar So I'll be able to apply and effect to a blank track to use with a live inst (dynamic mic in this case), rather than the prerecorded audio? Thanks for such a quick reply btw!
Yeah, so go to the 9:30 mark in the video and you'll see that I route instruments into blank tracks of one of the middle song. You can play a live instrument by adjusting the track routing. In order to apply an effect, you'd have to go into the individual project and select the effect there and make sure it's being applied to the track you want. If you want that to happen for every song in your playlist, you have to set up the instrument routing and the effects for each and every project in order for it to work....like if you want to sing along with all your songs and apply a reverb to the live mic, you'd have to do that set-up work ahead of time.
@@GazRendar Wonderful... thanks very much Gaz! I'll keep you posted... gig on Sunday :-)
@@GazRendar Thanks again Gaz... this is fantastic! Mic effect automation throughout our set... we'll be sing it at our Christmas gig this afternoon. You're a life-saver 🙂
Very helpful. Is it currently possible for a midi controller (like the Faderfox, Shik N32B) to control the CC on the L6 mixer?
I haven't tried it with those types of "lots 'o knobs" midi controllers, but it should work as long as you know which knobs are assigned to which CC signals.
@GazRendar So it's working as of the current firmware. That's great! Thanks for confirming :)
I haven't done extensive testing with it, but it seems to respond to MIDI CC signals that you can assign with the PC app and the drop down menus in the app. That seems to be working on this firmware update, but I've only done it as a proof of concept so far. I haven't actually tried assigning 8 different things to 8 different MIDI controller knobs yet...but I think it will work.
I ended up buying the korg oscillator because I wasn't sure if one of these graphic equalizers would work very well but now I see actually they would work pretty good... Awesome.
Is that the ebay one ?
I bought it off Amazon about 2 years ago as a DIY kit that I had to put together. But shortly after I bought it, it vanished from the Amazon listings. I got this one because it has an audio IN and audio OUT, which allows me to pass the sound through the display and still plug my headphones into it.
Thank you so much for the step-by-step it's so hard to follow a hour-long video like I barely remember anything other than the one thing I wanted to remember
You’re welcome! That’s exactly why I do these Quick Tip series of videos…just to focus on one specific question about a device to help people looking for one specific answer.
If you use an iPad ( lightning connector)and also the power from the iPad, then connect a usb hub (with no power) and then connect to the R12, … is this setup possible to get everything powered up … or power from the hub like in your example here and connect the iPad only with a usb connection … get the iPad also enough power from the powerd hub?
Usually no. If you have a hub between the iPad and R12 you usually need to send separate power to the hub. But more than that, it depends on what you want to do with the iPad.... If you want to use the iPad control app for the R12, I've only gotten it to work when I run a USB cable between the iPad and R12 directly. If I use a hub while trying to use the control app, it doesn't seem to work. That's because the control app takes up all the R12's USB bandwidth (I think). It's the same if you use the BTA-1 bluetooth adapter in the larger R20 and connect to an iPad control app -- if you do that the USB port on the R20 is essentially disabled for any other functions.
Hi, I’ve tried connecting my keyboard through the hub as per the video and it works as a midi controller but do you know how I can use the keyboard independently…..I’m getting no sound
Great video and after watching your video, I just bought one. I have the L8 so I very familiar with the interface, but there’s one thing I can’t figure out. How do you adjust the mix to the headphones?
The L-6 is not like the L-8 where you can adjust different mixes to the different headphone outs. The L-6 is much simpler and more straightforward because it only has the 1 headphone out. That headphone out and the L/R master outs output the same master signal. The audio bus mostly runs from left to right on the L-6, so the sound goes into the inputs, and then you can manipulate the EQ and panning, as well as the individual levels for each channel---then the sound goes to the effects panel and finally runs to the compressor and master volume. The mix in your headphones is the same as the master out mix. It's whatever you did to the individual channels. If you are only speaking about the levels of the individual channels, the L-8 has a fader for each channel. For the more compact L-6, you first have to select Level in the blue channel strip in the middle, then you can adjust the gain for each channel. I hope that answers your question...
@@GazRendar thanks for the reply. I can live with the bare bones features because the smaller form factor is worth it. But I really need a different mix on my headphones. I was playing around last night and noticed I can plug the headphones into the “aux 1 send”, and then you can hit the aux 1 button in the blue strip and adjust the different levels. The sound is only playing in one ear but it seems to work. Is this is valid work around?
It can be. The AUX outs only play in the left ear because they are summed mono outs. They are not stereo. However, depending on what instruments you have plugged into the inputs, they can have enough power that you can hear something in headphones. It's just not awesome quality because it's lower level summed mono signal. But if it gets the job done so you can hear something different, then it might work for you. But everything that you run into the L-6 will go out through the master out. So if you have stuff plugged into all the channels, all of that will run to the master out and the headphone out. You can isolate say, channel 3, to only go out of AUX 1, but whatever sound is in channel 3 will also go out of the master out and headphone out.
Nice!
Thanks!
On the L8, when recording, in order to get the master wav file, you have to put the tracks you want to record in “play” mode and then put the mixer in overdub record mode, the master track in record mode, and hit play to record it into a master. Are you saying that this one makes a master every time automatically?
The L-6 is more compact and it doesn't have an LCD screen to establish projects. It's simpler. Just hit the REC button and you'll get individual .WAV files for each channel as well as a stereo .WAV file for the master out. I cover it in more specific detail here: ua-cam.com/video/pKm4lGzMJgo/v-deo.html And here: ua-cam.com/video/yKX3VjImfo8/v-deo.html
I really just want it for the extra I/O over my MOTU M4. I have a mic, stereo guitar in, a stereo synth, and a stereo digital drum pad. The extra 1-2 ins are just icing on the cake.
Nice, I needed this!
Great. Happy to hear it helped!
Hi Gaz could I bother you one more time. I watched your video on connecting a midi keyboard through a hub. I connected my keyboard as per your video and it works as a midi with the present keyboard sounds in the R12 however I want to use the keyboard independently as it has more sounds but I can’t seem to use it on its own. On one song I’ve made with drums bass and guitars Im trying to add keyboard and when I press the little keyboard icon on the armed track it tells me I cannot change the track type delete regions or convert to an audio track first. I guess I’m asking how do I use my keyboard independently without using the midi presets. If you could help me out mate I’d be so grateful
So if your keyboard/synth has it's own sounds and you want those keyboard sounds, then don't connect the keyboard to the R12 via USB. What keyboard/synth are you using? Like an AKAI Mini Play? If that's the case, then just run a cable from the headphone out of the keyboard straight into inputs 1 and/or 2 and record it as audio, just as you would a guitar or a bass. Just adjust the volume out on the keyboard to probably be between 40-75% and then adjust the gain on the R12's input(s) accordingly. Plug your headphones into the R12 to hear everything. I hope that's what your asking...?
@ it is mate thanks again
I don't understand why they include a piano to play the synth but you can't record yourself playing it? What, do they think people are going to plug their r20s into a marshall stack and whip out some Jon Lord licks at the neighborhood open mic, instead of using a real keyboard??? PS. Thank you for the video, I did find it very helpful, it been a long time since ive used any recording device and this unit which ive just acquired is quite a bit different and more compact than my previous, greatly missed, Korg D1600. That had a similar situation with drum loops as far as a somewhat limited selection but you could make what they called, tempo maps, which really sped up the process for us non drummers out there. Plus I had a boss drum machine
Thanks for the video! Quick question: Are there any downsides to powering via USB? I have a Zoom R4 and usually stick to batteries, as I worry USB power might introduce audio interference. Since I’m new to routing lots of gear together, I figure it’s one less variable to deal with. That said, it’d be great to avoid changing batteries, especially since this will always stay in the same spot on my desk.
It depends. When I use that USB battery bank that you see in the video, I don't get any hidden line hum or noise. If I use the included wall adapter and provided USB cable, I don't get any line hum or noise. If I power the L-6 via a USB cable that is running to the laptop, I don't seem to get any line hum. However, if you have a USB power strip (where it has multiple open USB type A and/or C ports for charging) and I run a USB cable from that to my L-6, I can sometimes get line hum if I'm also using the strip to simultaneously power something else (like a cell phone).
@@GazRendar appreciate the info 🙏
I just found out that I can't assign input one to wherever I want 😢 as a solo artist using lots of 1/4 inch stuff, I'm screwed. This is what I get for not researching much but I would have figured this type of thing isn't some rare, high end feature. My Korg recorder from 20 years ago had it.
It’s not a big deal. You can think of the R20 much differently than your Korg D16 from years ago because this thing has a touch screen. Here, watch this ZOOM R20 Multitrack Recorder - overcoming the limitations of just two XLR 1/4 inch combo inputs ua-cam.com/video/EuVe58WC-ZE/v-deo.html
I just opened mine today and I have a feeling your channel will be a valuable resource for me, so thanks in advance.
What is the signal analyzer in the upper right???
It's just a $50 DIY kit that I bought close to two years ago. Among other things, it can give you a spectral analyzer view. Shortly after I bought it the thing it disappeared from the internet, otherwise I would have made a video about it. I included it here because it does provide some subtle visual cues about changes in the EQ settings.
Theres seems to allways be a gimmick with all these new contraptions😂
Excellent video, I just got a Zoom L-12 to record live concerts and to quickly record ideas at home. Thank you for all the information! Great stuff 👍👍👍
Thanks! And hope the L-12 works out great for your live shows and home recording!
THEY NEED TRIGGER RECORD TO START WHEN YOU START
What a brilliant idea! It's all I'll ever need for any vocal tracks I might want to record. I'm so glad I found your channel- good advice clearly presented and easy to understand.
Yeah, it's nothing special, and you might have to turn up the gain a bit or put some compression on the channel, but it works in a pinch. Thanks for the kind feedback!
Hi Gaz, hope you’re well. There’s a nice slow drum beat Modern R&B Verse BPM75 I’m trying to use. When I select it and playback its sped up much faster. I select track settings and lower the tempo but it doesn’t adjust. Can you please help mate
When you use a preloaded rhythm loop in the R12 (or R20) it's optimized to work at it's listed speed. However, the R12 will time stretch it to the tempo of your song ONLY when you first drop it into your project. So if your project is at 120bpm, and you drop in that Modern R&B Verse BPM75 loop, it will automatically drop it in at 120bpm. But the R12 had to do some serious CPU processing to make that happen because the drum loop is really a .WAV file. It's not a MIDI file. So when you hit play and discover that the beat is now faster at 120bpm and you try to turn the project tempo down to 75, the already time-stretched drum loop can't "go back" to 75bpm. You have two options to proceed: 1) You can select that drum loop audio region and now manually time stretch it to a tempo that you like and then proceed with recording the rest of your project 2) (recommended) Just delete the drum loop that you dropped in that sounds too fast. First set your project to the tempo that you really want---that might be 75bpm-- and then drop in the Modern R&B Verse BPM75 loop. It should be loaded into your project at the correct tempo now and you can proceed with recording the rest of your song.
Thanks Gaz it worked you’re a legend

Something like TouchOCS can probably be set up to send the midi CC to th L-6 for more control.
I haven't tried that app, but if it you can use it to successfully send the appropriate MIDI signals, it should work.
Thank you... clear video - such a useful tip.
Happy to help!
How does the compressor sound? could be used for a live performance ?
It's...fine. You can't tweak anything about it. It squeezes the top end a little bit and gives everything underneath it a fairly significant push. Depending on what you are playing you'll functionally feel an overall +2 to +4 dB gain in the master channel after you hit the COMP button, so you might have to turn down the master volume after you switch it on.
@@GazRendar just an mpc and a synth for live. At home two more synths only
The fact that it can not handle overdubbing is a deal killer. Amazing that a device with so many tracks/effects etc can not be used to build up a multitrack demo.
Well, I'm guessing Zoom made a conscious decision to not provide overdubbing with this unit. I think they were going for maximum compactness with super simple and easy recording by hitting one button and being able to get a multitrack recording plus master of whatever you were playing. If the wanted to add overdubbing they would have probably needed to put in screen. I'm guessing Zoom felt like they have enough products in their line up that can do overdubbing that they wanted to focus on something else with the L-6...and that something else is primarily a compact mixer that is well suited for synth players. I don't fault Zoom for not adding overdubbing, but I felt it was important to post the video to alert potential buyers for what they are getting in an L-6. it's a definitely a deal killer for some people, and a pretty perfect quick-recording mixer for others.
Hi could you help me, I’m unable to use different guitar effects on different tracks, the same effect loads onto all tracks. Am I doing something wrong?
You're not doing anything wrong. I made this video about the effects for the R20, but it's very similar for the R12...I think you'll find your answers here: ua-cam.com/video/xEbVO_L3l9Q/v-deo.html
Hi Gaz, thanks so much, problem solved. If it wasn’t for people like yourself taking the time to make these tutorial videos there would be lots of frustrated people in the world….many thanks brother
