Hi Gaz could I bother you one more time. I watched your video on connecting a midi keyboard through a hub. I connected my keyboard as per your video and it works as a midi with the present keyboard sounds in the R12 however I want to use the keyboard independently as it has more sounds but I can’t seem to use it on its own. On one song I’ve made with drums bass and guitars Im trying to add keyboard and when I press the little keyboard icon on the armed track it tells me I cannot change the track type delete regions or convert to an audio track first. I guess I’m asking how do I use my keyboard independently without using the midi presets. If you could help me out mate I’d be so grateful
So if your keyboard/synth has it's own sounds and you want those keyboard sounds, then don't connect the keyboard to the R12 via USB. What keyboard/synth are you using? Like an AKAI Mini Play? If that's the case, then just run a cable from the headphone out of the keyboard straight into inputs 1 and/or 2 and record it as audio, just as you would a guitar or a bass. Just adjust the volume out on the keyboard to probably be between 40-75% and then adjust the gain on the R12's input(s) accordingly. Plug your headphones into the R12 to hear everything. I hope that's what your asking...?
@@rothloaf1980 Hello, thank you, what parameters do you use to compress standard in the R20? You deal with the other question at the time of recording or after editing the compression, Regards
@@jorgehernaz I usually don't compress the track when I record it. I do use the individual track's limiter (under "track settings) set at -2db to keep from hitting the zero. Recording compression makes tracks sound dull when mixing, unless mixed with a direct signal, like one trk of uncompressed dry guitar, plus one trk of compressed guitar ... During mixdown I use "optcomp, blackopt, or LMT-76" which act like multiband compressors. You can separately dial how compressed the lows and highs are in the mix. I used to record live jazz and classical music so I record the natural sound without compression or fx, then compress individual tracks, if necessary, at mixdown. Hope that helps. Feel free to respond or ask anything else. Audio nerds unite!😃 Edit: "parameters": i usually set compressors at the 20-30 marks, with quick releases of 3-10ms. On the R20, tracks lose high end if over 30, but I do go higher on kickdrums.
Hi could you help me, I’m unable to use different guitar effects on different tracks, the same effect loads onto all tracks. Am I doing something wrong?
You're not doing anything wrong. I made this video about the effects for the R20, but it's very similar for the R12...I think you'll find your answers here: ua-cam.com/video/xEbVO_L3l9Q/v-deo.html
Hi Gaz, thanks so much, problem solved. If it wasn’t for people like yourself taking the time to make these tutorial videos there would be lots of frustrated people in the world….many thanks brother
Hi Gaz, hope you’re well. There’s a nice slow drum beat Modern R&B Verse BPM75 I’m trying to use. When I select it and playback its sped up much faster. I select track settings and lower the tempo but it doesn’t adjust. Can you please help mate
When you use a preloaded rhythm loop in the R12 (or R20) it's optimized to work at it's listed speed. However, the R12 will time stretch it to the tempo of your song ONLY when you first drop it into your project. So if your project is at 120bpm, and you drop in that Modern R&B Verse BPM75 loop, it will automatically drop it in at 120bpm. But the R12 had to do some serious CPU processing to make that happen because the drum loop is really a .WAV file. It's not a MIDI file. So when you hit play and discover that the beat is now faster at 120bpm and you try to turn the project tempo down to 75, the already time-stretched drum loop can't "go back" to 75bpm. You have two options to proceed: 1) You can select that drum loop audio region and now manually time stretch it to a tempo that you like and then proceed with recording the rest of your project 2) (recommended) Just delete the drum loop that you dropped in that sounds too fast. First set your project to the tempo that you really want---that might be 75bpm-- and then drop in the Modern R&B Verse BPM75 loop. It should be loaded into your project at the correct tempo now and you can proceed with recording the rest of your song.
Thanks Gaz for this excellent and informative video. videos about using the R12 are a bit thin on the ground!. Could you tell us please if the combo sockets on the R12 are too tight like the ones on the R20? Cheers!
You're welcome and thanks for watching! The combo jacks on the R12 are good. They grip 1/4" or XLR plugs but you don't need an excessive amount of force to pull them out. They are what you expect them to be. They are not like the ridiculously tight R20 combo jacks.
Hi Gaz, love your videos. I did a "mix down" but can't locate the mix down version to playback to see how the mix sounds. How do I access it? Sorry if this is a basic question.
After you MIX DOWN...that stereo .WAV file will end up in your AUDIO folder. You can easily hear it if you pop the SD card into your computer and select it there. However, if you want to hear it on the R12, you'll first need to re-import that stereo .WAV file into your current project or a new project. Here's how to import .WAV files on the R20, but it's pretty much the same thing on an R12: ua-cam.com/video/JMmjrkenS8s/v-deo.html
Mate i do have a trouble.I import a file, add an effect to it and try to save it with an effect but when i press Mix down the effect immediately disappears,so i tried to export just a single track instead of mixdown and same,it plays with effect but saves the file without it.
So you are imported a .WAV file onto a Track, but you can't get any effects on it during Mix Down? Hmmmm... 1) Are you importing a mono or stereo file? And is the file 16 or 24 bit? (I've almost exclusively used 24bit and it works for me) 2) After you import the file, are you selecting a Send Effect (don't select an Insert Effect) and then going to the track where the imported .WAV is, turning on the Send Effect, and moving the Send Effect Level slider up for that track? 3) Are you moving the master Send Effect fader (the blue one) up during Mix Down? 4) After Mix Down, you are looking for the new mixed down file in the AUDIO folder of your SD card? Here's a video about Send and Insert Effects for reference. It's for the R20, but most of it also applies to the R12: ua-cam.com/video/xEbVO_L3l9Q/v-deo.html
Each track has it's own manual fader control. You can leave a fader in a position, leave a Project, and come back to it, and it will remember where you left the fader. However, they are not motorized faders. So if you hit Play to listen to your song, the R12 won't remember how you dynamically moved the fader during that playback. It only remembers one static fader position. If you want to fade individual tracks in and out during playback or mix down, you still need to move them individually with the faders. That's sort of demonstrated in this video a little past the 7:00 minute mark. You can see me adjusting the volume of two tracks back and forth in real time with the manual fader control. ua-cam.com/video/9ma_3CZbxCM/v-deo.html
@@GrowingTreesEasy Yes. You can independently move all 8 Track faders during a final mix down. During a mix down you can also apply 1 effect patch and choose to apply it to any or all of the tracks. You can also adjust that send effect level in real time with the send effect fader on the R12. When you mix down, you get a stereo .WAV file stored on the SD card.
@@GazRendar Last question:so i can use that final stereo mix to add more instruments and to start a new project? If it’s stereo probably i will need to assign it to two channels so i will be able to add 6 more channels to it?
Yes. You can absolutely do that. I highlighted that in my R12/R20 bounce track video. It's also specifically demonstrated here with the R20, but the process is the same with the R12: ua-cam.com/video/JMmjrkenS8s/v-deo.html
No. The R12 is the smaller unit and it only has two combo 1/4"--XLR inputs. The larger R20 model has two combo inputs along with 6 XLR inputs for a total of 8 inputs.
