What happens when biblical patriarchy, christian nationalism, and a theology of authority and submission become the pillars of a movement? Scores of abuse stories in marriages, schools, churches, families, and more.
Though these ideas have filtered throughout the United States for decades, they found a home in Moscow, Idaho, through the ministry and work of Doug Wilson. From there, they have influenced churches across the United States, and across the world.
In this series, you’ll hear from experts on all aspects of these movements, and the stories of abuse from those who survived. Some are Christian, some are not, but one thing they’ve got in common? They’re finally speaking out.
This is their story.

Probably a red flag when he says, "if we pursue men, we not CONQUER not only the men; we CONQUER their wives and their children." Do you want to attend a church that seeks to conquer you and your family?
I understand Trueman's lament, but I'd add this, many denominations lost sight of the mission and people suffered. So some of us stayed away b/c the brand became something else -- and we were in it, then left being disheartened by them.
Have you guys ever considered doing an episode on defining patriarchy? In my experience/conversations with people there’s a lot of confusion over the term, and many seem to interpret it differently than how it’s used on this podcast. Might be helpful for newcomers.
Coming in four weeks!
The authoritarianism found in CREC churches is found everywhere. Denominational conformism is an example of that. Rather than see it as a beneficially predictable product, we should see it as prohibition of growth into the likeness of Christ. Know the word of God, speak it no matter who you are, and be willing to receive excommunication as you seek the kingdom of God.
Great episode! Basically, Wilson and the CREC can be boiled down to the political right social gospel or as DeYoung called it, “right wing wokeism”
Its only woke is you realize that a neutral political and social sphere is an enlightenment myth and that the outflow of the Gospel is a transformed world, calling all of that woke is silly.
Thanks for the edification.
Respectfully, denominationalism/sectarianism is sin. Although a united local church seems impossible, at this stage of the Protestant Reformation, we must not deceive ourselves re. the clear New Testament model and teaching for the church to be one body and one Spirit. It's ironic to me that "gifted ministers", who administer the Word if God to the church, can be so dogmatic regarding their particular doctrines and practices that they form and enshrine divisions in the church, apparently oblivious to crucial doctrine re. corporate unity. It's right there in the supper and throughout the NT- one body and one Spirit. The New Testament example and requirement is for each church to be united at a local level, working in loving cooperation with neighboring local churches. There were ministers, with various giftings, moving around from church to church to serve and fellowship beyond the local church, establishing a sort of network of churches, but these should not be sectarian individuals assigned to these roles. I realize that this appears somewhat naive, given the present circumstance, but what's the point of building on anything other than the Word of God? We've seen many Reformed "denominations" rise and fall in much shorter order than even the "Catholic" church. The reality is "we all know in part" and leaders and teachers in the church, who know the most, ought to know this best. There's plenty of room for reasonable questioning and dialog within the church, while still being firmly built upon the doctrine of Christ. I this respect, I applaud Wilson for incorporating various views. It's just ridiculous that they make it into another "denomination" - the last thing we need now.
Thank you for exposing this abuse.
This is legitimately one of the worst things I’ve ever heard, and I’m a mortician- I hear terrible stories all the time. I am in awe of Stephanie’s sheer determination, although I regret that it was necessary. I think many people would not have survived the hardship she endured, and I hope she continues to recover and heal. Nothing I can say will undo what has been done, but I wish her the best.
Has she been able to get a lot of healing therapy? My heart was breaking throughout this entire episode. Thank you for being an avenue for her to tell her story, and thanks to her for the amazing courage she must have to speak!
She has!
@@SonsofPatriarchydo you know if she ever called the authorities and reported her sexual abuse? Did she seek to charge the pastor at presbytery? If not, someone should help her to do those things or do them for her.
@ So good to know! May God comfort and encourage her!
This poor girl. I'm not even done listening to this..😢 if you have a mustard seed of faith, you're amazing. So brave. I've been abused, too. Girl, may God's hand be heavy upon those vile people..
I am glad that she was able to tell her story and recover in her own way.
I think this was your best episode yet. I'm a huge fan of classical education, too, and it's a shame that it's been distorted.
Can someone tell me if John Belden was ever charged with sexual abuse? What is his status as of now?
Who is John Belden, as a Pastor was he ever excommunicated by the OPC?
From what I'm hearing, her parents are guilty of crimes against an adult, of kidnapping, and threats to harm.
Correct.
When she didn’t call the cops on her parents, I wondered if she didn’t trust the cops or didn’t know her parents actions were illegal. Either would be understandable in the context, but I wondered which was the reason.
Restart 27:11
Stephanie, I am SO SORRY for all that you've suffered at the hands of men and women. You didn't deserve all of the gross mistreatment. You deserve so much better. I'm so grateful that you recognize that in Jesus. I mourn with you, and I praise God with you, in the end, as you closed this very sad story in Him. May the Lord continue to heal you and vindicate you. You ARE LOVED with an everlasting love!
27:17 this sounds so much like Scientology
Did I miss something? How did she escape and what is she doing now ?
God reveals the sin before He judges. Presbybots at the top...God is watching you. Repent.
I now understand why a certain Presbybot ruling elder is divorced twice. Geeeeezzzzuuusss !!
Yikes. There is something about organizations that are extremely sexually repressive in that they almost pornographically obsess over the sex lives and experiences of others.
Thank you for your immense courage and vulnerability. You are not alone.
I've listened to almost all of the episodes in this series and am just blown away by the courage of these women, and enraged by how hateful, abusive, and unaccountable these awful men are. My one criticism is that almost all of these amazing women have gone public with their real names (and I totally understand why some would not) but the abusers are not listed anywhere. We need a public list of these men, many of whom are still ministers/educators in good standing with their church and organization.
I’m cautious because this is only one side of these stories, a prosecution without a defense, which is biblically unjust.
A prosecution would require an actual judge.
So victims of abuse shouldn’t speak out? Even when justice hasn’t been served?
@@jahnvantuttlesma8215victims need to be proven as victims by sufficient evidence and a cross examination. Anything else is slander. Or can I get on a podcast and accuse you of anything I want?
Stephanie. What an extraordinary human you are; I am in awe of you. When you say that God has been refining you, it is so powerfully true. Your courage to share your story sends me speechless and so very grateful for God’s creation of such a beautiful woman. These words you have shared will save untold many captives and embolden the rescuers who don’t yet know that they are needed. God bless you, sister in Christ. Prayers for continued healing and peace in your life.
Legalistic communities will inevitability foster abuse (regardless of denomination, branch/sect, or even religion if you want to go broader). Every denomination should be vigilant to root out and expose these happenings because I imagine all of them have some skeletons in the closet. The exposed abuses in some of these churches should be a wake up call. Sadly, in many cases it seems that it only gets addressed when it becomes headline news (like in the case of Catholicism or the Protestant Reformed Church, and even then I'm not sure it was/is being addressed properly).
This episode was the most impactful for me. To hear of Stephanie's horrific abuse helped me finally to realize the deep oppression of my own spiritual abuse. Somehow that truth helped to set me even more free. The demonic control and cruelty of these oppressive religious systems causes life long profound damage to those abused by it.
That "demon" would be a man named Doug Wilson.
My heart breaks for this woman! She was abused in every way, and kidnapped. The abuses done to her are so evil. Honestly, it sickens me to hear the repeated statements of “we aren’t trying to damage the OPC.” The OPC SHOULD be damaged! It should be completely dismantled, as its very definitions of male/female relationships are abusive!
"The OPC SHOULD be damaged! It should be completely dismantled, as its very definitions of male/female relationships are abusive!" Such an irresponsible, ignorant comment. Sadly, I'm sure others will join you; been waiting for it.
@@jeffdowns1038 Your presbytery is the very one that Stephanie speaks about. The PSE is one of the most, if not the most, abusive presbyteries in the OPC. Your comment shows no sorrow for the horrific abuse that has happened under your watch.
@@ahofland8343 I responded to a comment, as you can see, about the OPC, whether the PSE or (as is mentioned above) the entire OPC. So, given the nature of this kind of thing (social media comments) I was not commenting on the video (and its content), but a previous comment. I don't agree with your accusation about the PSE, nor do I agree that whatever happened here, happened under my watch, as you say, "horrific abuse that has happened under your watch." You write as if the whole presbytery knew something. You write as if I had been part of the presbytery. You're comment, as the one above is irresponsible and ignorant.
@@jeffdowns1038 No, my comment is not irresponsible nor ignorant. Let me try and be clearer. You are a member of the PSE. There are at least several abuse stories that have taken place under your watch, while you have been a member. Our daughter's story being one of them. I don't remember you standing up for Fred as he desperately tried to get the presbytery to see what was happening. What truly happened to our precious girl just got hidden and buried. If you are ignorant of what happened, then please go and watch my pinned post and read the attached evidence. Since leaving the OPC at least 4 years ago now, more abuse stories have come out from your presbytery and from under your watch. You have at least one pastor still ministering now who has been credibly accused. God sees it all Jeff. The PSE has a serious problem. Stephanie and Chelsea's stories are just one of who knows how many.
@@jeffdowns1038 why not listen to the episode and show some sympathy to this abused woman instead of demonstrating the very defensiveness and obfuscation that allows abusers to be protected in oppressive contexts like the OPC. As far as I can tell ALL of the hateful men in this episode are still pastors/members in good standing in the OPC so if the entire OPC is not the problem, why don't you do something about these horrible humans who minister in your denomination? That or just STFU.
Oh wow. This is terrible. Thank you for showing up and sharing your stories! So many of us from so many other churches can relate to some of these things. The poison has spread far and wide. May your work be come a healing antidote for many wrongly accused and abused Christ-folkowers!
The notable thing about the CREC isn’t how they are like all other Christians, it’s how they are like all other cults. All cults have a single leader or layer of leadership that is basically unaccountable to anyone.
Homeschool isn't all bad, but sometimes it can be, especially without oversight or if the parents are crazy or dumb... I know some geniuses that did homeschool (one kid got into college at 9 --- was homeschooled). I was also way ahead due to homeschool, but it all depends on the parent. The problem is if you get weirdos who make your kid complementarian ~ ABEKA books (cough cough) those guys are crazy!
This is an attack on Doug Wilson without any Biblical arguments as to why he is wrong and one should not follow him.
Sons of Patriarchy, your guests closing statement has me in tears. I have left the soft comp fellowship where my husband & I met. Jesus, or Yeshua in the Hebrew as we call Him, is not in their beliefs concerning women, so I left. My heart needed the reminder of leaving family for Messiah. I know this is completely off topic, but please give my deepest thanks to your guest. I hear his shepherd's heart for the flock. 😭💜
I will let Thabiti know!
What is the Chief end of man?.....
Do we get to answer from Westminster, or from Scripture?
@@keelyemerine-mix1051 Either one would work, they both say the same thing (1 Cor. 10:31) To glorify God...
1.) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of Knowledge 2.) He has told you oh man what is required of you, love justice, seek mercy, walk humbly with your God
Darn I missed out on classical Christian education. The private Christian school I attended was just public school minus evolution and with chapel on Wednesday.
After my parents became intwined in the ideas of white christian supremacy they became hardhearted and callous towards anyone who would not kneel to their dogma. They lost compassion, empathy and kindness towards others, including their own grandchildren. It was " the chosen " against all others, and they were soldiers in God's army. After my mom died in 1989, my dad went off the deep end, and told all of us that unless we adopted his brand of true christianity "you are no more to me than dogs". Wilson, Walnau and Copeland were his heroes. It destroyed our family. He had no mercy. Christian?!
PS -- This might be the most critically important installment in a series that I believe has the capacity not only to turn a lot of hard hearts to God, but to send a seismic shift through a largely unknowing, perhaps indifferent, white Christian Church in America.. God bless you.
The astounding and proud lack of care or concern for those children whose parents cannot afford Public School school or who are unable to homeschool is possibly the worst public shame to the gospel in the United States today. Doug Wilson has Sanctified indifference toward community, toward children other than our own, and toward the notion, once embraced by Christians, of the common good. I contend that this is an outgrowth of his Calvinism, which makes it silly, perhaps even sinful, to care more than a damning God for those perceived to be outside the Body. Wilson may die attempting to sanctify callous indifference to others, but he will die hard-hearted, unloving, and, I am convinced, bereft of any Fruit of the Holy Spirit.
I think you meant to say Christian school.. But yes 100%. There is a nasty NASTY hierarchy in Reformed and Calvinist churches where they really dislike anyone who goes to public school or went to one, and you are judged. You are extra judged if female (I think they think if you went to a public school you are now a whore- even if you've never had sex or partied at all). The conclusion is the unsaved attend public college, especially if female. If you are male you get a pass to go to a public school ,though you aren't as looked up to as those who attended a private college that is $60,000k+ per year... that means you are godly! I've met the most proud cruel people in Reformed churches who judge others by where they attended college, high school, or even grade school. It is disgusting and not Christian to have such an attitude.
Thank you for an excellent teaching program Doug Wilson’s brand of "reformed classical Christian education" claims to revive historic Christian and classical approaches to teaching. However, it is neither truly reformed, classical, nor Christian in its execution. The reformed tradition emphasizes the sovereignty of God and the work of the Holy Spirit in all aspects of life, including education, but Wilson’s model substitutes rigid systems and human constructs for reliance on the Spirit. Classical education historically prioritized critical thinking and engagement with diverse perspectives, yet Wilson’s version enforces a narrow, ideologically-driven curriculum. His approach also departs from authentic Christian discipleship by seeking to mold students into a specific cultural agenda, essentially treating education itself as a sanctifying force, a role that Scripture assigns exclusively to the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). By conflating education with spiritual formation in a prescriptive and authoritarian manner, Wilson's system undermines the genuine freedom and reliance on the Spirit that both classical and Christian education historically sought to foster. This model turns education into an idol rather than a tool for God’s glory.
I'd rather be friends with an uneducated but spiritually formed person than an educated pagan... same goes for leadership purposes.
An undereducated, but spiritually formed person... will not remain undereducated and will have drive to strive for both intellectual and spiritual growth. An educated but spiritually ignorant individual is how you get psychopaths.
@@spartakos3178 Yes, and we can't manipulate or conjure up faith in a child or anyone else.
@@1Whipperin There is no such thing as a neutral education. Children are being indoctrinated into the ways of the pagan or the ways of God.
Excellent analysis!
While I encourage parents to do whatever they think is best for their kids in regards to their education, I can’t help but see the pairing of the advocation for homeschooling with the movement to defund or flat out close public schools. One of the biggest dangers of homeschooling is the lack of exposure of kids to ideas that differ from or conflict with the worldview of their parents. If a parent teaches their kids American history from the perspective that the “founding fathers” were noble good men who cared about creating an equitable/free society, that child is missing the fundamental hypocrisy that those men were slaveowners and advocates for genocide against the natives. Or, those facts might get whitewashed if they’re ever brought up. That’s just one example. Kids, and adults, should be exposed to various perspectives in all subjects because the truth is derived from the dialectic of various perspectives in conversation. Plus, we have to remember that 1) the modern homeschooling movement was spurred on by desegregation in the 1960s and 2) this is a very, very, very American phenomenon. Most other industrialized, “first world” nations don’t allow this practice at all. America is weird. I’m from Louisiana living in Budapest.
Thanks for the excellent comments.
Yeah I would say its the parents right to fully raise their children and that would include education and the question should be if the state has the right to educate, and thus in a large part, raise children. Some (most certainly not all and not majority) of homeschool families fail to teach the flaws of the founders to theue children, but the state schools also teach lies and dont have the right to educate children (if its permissible is a different topic). Im a white passing biracial man who did private school, a large number of years in a charter school, 5th grade and middle school at home and then public school and dual enrollment at the l local college. Public school is a breeding ground for racial tension and tension against whites is most certainly no exception and while not all, alot of the history of public school is revisionist in the opposite direction of what this podcast has expressed concern about. The issue really isnt homeschooling. Also this podcast talks alot about abuse in the CREC, fair enough idk much about that so Im listening. I know first hand my counties public school system is rotten with child abuse. Unfortunately children everywhere are vulnerable. I wish real solutions were put forward.
We were very aware that problems could be had in any education system - and tried to do a balanced curriculum when we did home school.
Funny, you live now in one of the most fascist countries in europe... makes sense that you think that state owning of children is not weird, while teaching your own children is weird. Why do you talk about slave owners, while living in very racist place? Or perhaps you can move even closer to Russia and start moralizing from there.
Yeah. I'm also worried what they are teaching women if they are complementarian. I saw a child's book written by one and even at age 1 they are saying boys and girls have different roles... /scary/ their women are going to be told to never go to college or contribute to society except to get pregnant before 25.
Keep up the good work! It seems to me that God has appointed you for such a time as this! Still very confusing but I think that just speaks to the depth of the evil that is involved here! Causing true believers to possibly lose their faith is unconscionable!
I’ve always thought that with Rushdoony, he just said the thing…we’re gonna kill children and gay people if they don’t conform. The new Christian Nationalists, as edgy as they want to be, for the most part know they can’t say this. That’s why they meander in circles when you try to ask them direct questions. I don’t believe they don’t know what they want-I think they don’t want to be honest about it.
I’ve always thought the best way to think about Christian Nationalism or any other of the illiberal philosophies bubbling up on the Right as permission structures. What are they giving themselves permission to do that they don’t otherwise feel would be acceptable? What rights are they looking to strip from others, and how do they justify it?
I never realized how broad the CREC is. It is Located in so many different areas. And just the tragic testimonies of so many people. It is sad and painful to hear what these victims have gone through and the healing process that is much needed. First Mr. & Mrs. anonymous you went through a fire, but you did it together the only 2 in the room seeking real truth and a real example of living Christ through you. I say Amen you did not let them divide what God has joined together. Then Jane thank you for your testimony I am encourage by you stepping out of your comfort zone to shed light on the evils of the CREC may it be used to glorify Christ and help those still held in bondage.
The whole system is set up for abuse and hypocrisy. It is people and places like this that turn people AWAY from Christ so sad. How deceived is Doug Wilson and his followers.!!!!!
If there’s anything we’ve learned over the last decade from Christians, it is that morality is bullshit. They never meant it.
