My family and I left a church system that is very similar. My wife and I had reason to believe that someone who was on the fast track to becoming an elder wasn't qualified. We voice our concerns. We were assured everything was fine. Further conflict came up between us and the elder to be. Through "biblical" counseling, we were gaslit to believe that we needed to repent and forgive (take down boundaries), which we weren't willing to do. My kids and ultimately my wife were portrayed as sinners. It nearly tore our marriage apart, and we are still rebuilding. I never thought I would have to choose between my wife and the church. I chose my wife.

All the cruelty, manipulation, lies and abuse is seen as righteousness that
is justified to keep members in line.
It is a hive mentality that can feel safe
until it isn't, and you (or someone you
love) has the wrath of "God" turned full
force against you as you are punished
for daring to think, speak, or question.
The good news is that this can force us
to escape and to find a better life free of the prison of living that way.

Rebellious, angry, bitter. I heard those cutting words so many times before getting married.

Keep up the great work! It is all beginning to make morer sense to me now! What a sad story to see the pain in the abused and there push to leave the faith because of their abuse! I am praying! 🙏🙏💖💖

My family has close ties to Wilson's church. The abuse I witnessed was ridiculous.
The children screaming daddy or mommy please stop. Leaves an impression on you.

I tried listening to DW, there is lots of him all over youtube. at first I wanted to like him, but needed something concrete. and from his own lips. Listening to him was so boring. just couldn't get into him. now I realize it is because he talks in circles and also likes to state things and the opposite of same things and the taking in circles in between just distracts you from noticing the double speak. or blame shifting. or etc.

Uuuummm…PA does have more guidelines about homeschooling than some states. But it’s not “rigid” unless you aren’t wanting to educate your kids.

Remember that laws and guidelines change over time, so it might have been different. I don’t know how old she is but I know in my homeschool group in Iowa there were some kids my age who had older siblings who had been homeschooled when it was illegal in our state.
Edit: yeah just listened again and she said this was in the 90’s so laws were VERY different back then around homeschooling. Generally a lot more strict in most places.

@@JaredMillsIA i’ve lived in Pennsylvania, almost all of my life. I just lived in New York from 1982-1990. I know people who were homeschooling in the 90s. I guess I should explain my comment more. Someone who wants little to no oversight over their homeschooling is going to complain about even very reasonable regulations on homeschooling and my guess is that is what the first woman in today’s episode heard from her parents.

@@jennriedy6626 appreciate the clarification. To be clear, I do not doubt that they are far from “strict” as some states have and even as a homeschooled kid I am pretty ambivalent about it/would like to see stronger regulation. I just know that in the past there have been states (like Iowa) in which “strict” could be the right word whether right or wrong. I have not looked into PA 90’s homeschooling laws so I will defer to you on that one.
