Growing ROAD RAGE Towards EV's | Is it REAL? | What's Your Experience? | Electric Car Australia
In this video, I make the observation general road rage appears to be on the increase on Australian roads. Maybe also becoming more targeted at EV drivers? This led to my decision to remove various stickers (sometimes called Bumper Stickers) from my EV or battery electric vehicle (BEV) advertising the cars "enjoy the silence" electric propulsion method.
Historically I had used these stickers as a community education method to show there were more than just Tesla electric vehicles on the road and prompt people to ask questions about my EV ownerships experience. Recently however my better half was thinking these 'proud to be an EV' stickers were unnecessarily aggravating fossil fuelled, mainly diesel, vehicle drivers who hate electric cars so the EV stickers had to go.
He's what you'll find in this educational EV video:
- Observations road rage within Australian cities is on the increase.
- Questioning if the increasing numbers of EV's on Australia roads may be leading to more aggressive behaviour from EV haters.
- A personal experience with road rage leading to hospitalisation
- Asking EV owners and drivers if they are experiencing more road rage?
- Asking drivers considering buying an electric vehicle if targeted EV road rage was a consideration?
- And much more....
I trust you enjoy the video discussing road rage in Australia, particularly from a real world EV owner and drivers perspective. If you haven’t please click ‘Subscribe’ and hit the ‘Bell’ icon to make sure you don’t miss my next Video.

welcome to the cyclist world
Thanks for a great summary. Looking to buy a used EV. The MG is one of the options.
What does your stickers say because a lot of EV owners put stickers and promote that i own an EV and you dont becauuse you are an horrible person destoring the planet and you are a bad person and that tics people off and personally i think evs are rubbish and over priced and dont like the fact that kids are working theones to get the minerals that are used. Dor the battries to make them but everyone can drive what they like i dont have the money to buy one and sont want one yesterday i drove about 700 km left in the morning and got home about 9.30pm and i went to the servo filled the hirw car an MG took 3 minutes and srove home it was for a medical appointment and 5 hours both ways an ev i would have had to add another 3 to 4 hours to that so its not a good option but I dont like to be told by perople that are not machinal minded and think that other are better and knowore then me because they drive an EV and there are a lot out there that arelike that got their heads you no wwere so putting stickers over your car as your better theen other because you drive an EV is a cowards way to say something if you stopped got out and said have you though about an Ev and id not interested then leave and say ok but do do it with a sticker it like your boss firwing you by phone text you would like it so pratice what you preach andd dont tell others they are not good people because they dont see the world in you view . I just tell some reasons why people ho off as i say what does to stickers say .no one should do road rage and even on close calls and i have had small crashes not my fault i get out ask if they are ok and not hurt or if close i kust think they are idiots calm down and forget about it no damage done and get on with my day and i dont care if they drive an EV so. Long as they drive carreful and dont do anthing wrong and yes people do make mistakes but if genuion than ok but i dont like and think people should pay the price for road rage and i have had people angury as hell because i dtopped juat as the lights about to turn red and i stop as it hits red they yhink keep going they go off and i just ignor them as i did the right thing and if they go to attack me well look out i will reuin their day and they will get areested
Last Dec i got my 1st EV a BYD Seal and love it will never go to ICE car ever again, but i must say road rage is been on the rise for years now in Melbourne and mostly comes from the UTE drivers 90% male drivers that's for sure i personally haven't noticed if it's worst because I'm driving now a EV most don't even know if it's a EV well maybe they do as we takeoff from the lights without even trying EV's are just that much more faster and silent that probably they are just not happy that you leave them in the dust.
Electric Cars are Just Overpriced Garbage!
Mate,I think you and your stickers have pissed off these people. Just get rid of the stickers as your sensible wife has suggested. I don't think people care that much about EVs. If they do they will have to distinguish between a hybrid,. a phev and a EV.

The anti China rhetoric doesn't help
I don't think driving an EV is the problem, but the stickers wouldn't have done you any favours. I dont really like learning about people's personal interests from the stickers on the back of their cars, less is more in that respect. 😅
I suggest that you put a new sticker on, “ dash cam recording “.
Mate, get rid of the stickers. You can't stop the idiots. you and your wifes' safety comes first. I dont have any stickers on mine. Thanks for you videos, they have been very helpful :)
Hate to break it to you, EV owners are not special. Every day at some point there's a Ford Ranger on my arse.
So true and I own a Pajero 😂😂
Haven't had any EV related issues here. Maybe Chines EV?
Lead by example, be considerate and generous when driving. Don't give them any oxygen. Its not evs or bikes or anything - its young, aggressive males. Half of us were that once.
Just more road rage in general. Crowded roads, bigger vehicles, busier more self entitled people. My $0.02 worth.
In addition to young men in diesel utes, I also have men aged 50s - 70s confront me in carparks (driving a Tesla makes me their target). When challenged about how long it takes to charge, I smuggly reply "it takes 30 seconds to charge - 15 seconds to plug in and 15 seconds to unplug - and the rest of the time I'm at home anyway doing other things."
@@mspalmboy 30 seconds to change?
It was really interesting for me watching this episode , as I grew up some 50 odd k's across the border, now Serbia of course. I live in Australia for the past 44 years. Last time i was in Szeged, (2012)I couldn't believe the sizd of it. Thanks for the update. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. More to come soon.
I live in south west Sydney and haven’t experienced anything out of the ordinary yet in my Tesla. Maybe that is due to people knowing Teslas have cameras?
I hear you. My next car will be a Tesla anyhow. I do not believe that the the attitudes will change on our roads any time soon. Driver education is still on the same level as it was 40 years ago. Road rage if fueld by many different factors, mainly stupidity and impatience . Having a EV sign on one's car coud be an open invitation to senceless violence by ones high on diesel sut...
This is truly disturbing behaviour if it’s actually “a thing”. I mean I know road rage is a thing but to single out EV’s is truly bizarre behaviour. As for the 4x4 ute drivers, can you just imagine how challenged their masculinity will be when all the BYD Shark utes start popping up in early 2025 😕.
I have an old ICE vehicle (soon to get an EV) and I’m amazed at the aggression and impatience on the roads. Not necessarily young men but often young women as well. Makes you wonder if there’s something in the water😂. So sorry to hear you’ve had this behaviour!
I see so many women driving past our house, doing the school drop off and pick up thing for their children each day. They are driving at mach 3 down small/narrow neighbourhood streets paying zero attention to their speed, as if they are on an 8 lane freeway. I have even seen a female neighbour driving on her way to work each morning, eating a bowl of breakfast cereal. Spoon in one hand, bowl in the other. What is doing the steering?
I cannot say that I have had any road-rage events while driving my EV that have been any more than the tail-eaters because I am following the speed limit (in 40kmh road-works areas is the WORST one. EVERY driver seems to completely ignore these and I often see many flying past at 60-70kmh). But specifically because I drive an EV? Yup. I suspect this might be because my EV (Hyundai Ioniq 6) is not outwardly badged as being one, and is just a slightly unusual looking sedan. Most people are really cool when they realise what it is. My prediction is that the sticker-removal will make almost 2/5 of bugger-all difference. Such 20-40 year old males in diesel SUVs are just arrogant jumped up twats to almost any driver who follows the road rules, especially on speed limits and ESPECIALLY if you dare to slow them down in their headlong rush to the next red-light! Or to the undertakers' services. They cause great abuse towards ICE car drivers as well. I know this because until last year I had to deal with them in my old Ford Falcon, and I have faced their abuses for decades a s bicycle rider riding on main roads.
Really. The first person you blame on no evidence whatsoever is the blokes girlfriend. In my experience men don’t need a reason to be aggressive. There are a lot of Facebook negative posts about electric cars. I think this is feeding the agression.
Thanks for watching and the comment. I'm happy to hear everyone's experience and evidence. Thanks for sharing.
I think you mean some men, also I have seen more aggressive young women driving than men, but that may just be a New Zealand thing. So many of these young women are driving very nice cars and sometimes have children in the car. It's usually around school drop off and pick up times and after work.
@ my experience is singularly male aggression. My garage is in a rear access lane. I recently opened the garage door to see a workman’s Ute parked across my driveway. Couldn’t see anyone so I beeped my horn (once) and he came out, asked him to move his truck so I could leave and instead of a ‘sorry’ and quickly jump in the car to move it, he starts yelling at me saying I didn’t need to beep the horn I could have come looking for him. He went on and on about the horn making out the whole thing was my fault. 2nd incident: Busy street, I parked behind a car giving me enough space to exit easily. Whilst sitting waiting for my very ill daughter who is having an X-ray nearby, the car in front of me drives off and is immediately replaced by another smaller car. I get an aggressive banging on my driver’s window. The young guy is going off at me for parking too far away from the car in front making it difficult for people to park behind me. This guy was in a Ford F150 which is 1.5 metres longer than my car and he was still able to park his truck on the street two spaces behind me. He was so aggressive that it rattled me for the rest of the day. I’m a 70 year old woman, and truly think that this entitlement expressed by male drivers, often tradies is out of control. Where is the courtesy gone?
I don't have an EV, but will change soon. We live in a "mostly" bogan country, where noise=power. Being a site mechanic, I have workers constantly tell me the machine is not performing, with a new and quieter exhaust. A machine that is old and slow, very noisy. The workers love it and thinks it "works" harder. I hope people wake up and soon.
Thanks for the comment. Now that you mention it, yes I think this is often the thinking of some people.
Thanks for the video. Id invest in a dash cam, dont have an EV but intend to get one. Got the dash cam after presumed dope dealer harassing me on the road(20somthing ys old) in a 90000 BMW. To much entitlement in our society many dumb one's seem to believe TV commercials about how important they are etc...
So sad your wife is incurring this bad behavior from idiots. Lots of EVs in my area, Fig Tree Pocket. My next car will be an EV too. Enjoy your vids, keep them up.
Thanks for watching :)
A road rage's biggest fear is being videoed I have shut a number down this way. I found it was always a Toyota 4x4 then the ute drivers I also like the MG's as they look like cars, not bathtubs on wheels. I often think Tesla drivers buy for the status and a lot of bogans see that as a target.
Where can I find stickers like those?
I bought them online years ago. Sorry cant remember where
Never been the victim of road rage here in Eugene, Oregon, but I do think driving standards are poor. I frequently see people wandering out of their lane, and many people fail to use their indicators. Lots of EVs and hybrids around though.
You are right there has been an increase, really since Covid hit. Deisel Dual-cab Utes and drivers are the main problem. They overtake and try and smoke you with their particulate blow out. Others are BMW SUV's, who try and drag you at lights or Holden HSV V8's doing the same thing. You get a little edgy on the roads not knowing what they are going to do. I had a Holden Ute try and drag me at the lights and lost control and completed a 360-degree turn. These are not provoked at all. Perhaps there is a need to educate people about why there are electric cars. I keep saying 'We need to stop burning fossil fuels so we can breathe easier'. But people seem to think Hybrids are the answer - it goes over 1,000km on a tank (but they don't understand they are still burning stuff getting there). It is strange why this is happening now, especially for Tesla's. Maybe its Elon. People don't care about BMW, Audi's, Mercedies vehicles at all these days. Whereas once thought of as rich men's vehicles. Maybe it's because they have committed to an expensive Dual-cab and the government sets a mandate to get all vehicles to alternative energies by 2035, eh who know why the mentality has shifted.
Thanks for this video, I appreciate your efforts. Yes! I am amazed that people will flash you and blow their horns if you overtake them on the country roads. I was warned about this from another Tesla owner before I purchased mine. And he was right. You can accelerate quite quickly in a Tesla and I think that scares people, but I’m only guessing. But I’m thankful for the many cameras my car has to record aggressive drivers. I always make sure I get their number plate first in any encounter. It helps to protect yourself a little. I would recommend getting a front and rear facing dash cam I your vehicle isn’t fitted with one already. And don’t be afraid to report anything to the police. That need to know what’s going on with people. Cheers and safe driving everyone.
Thanks for watching and the comment.
Very informative. Thanks mate.
Glad you enjoyed it
Driving EV’s since 2016, I’ve noted an increase in road rage in general, but not against me or EV’s in particular. What I have noticed is more EV & ICE drivers that run under the speed limit in right hand lane or side by side with another car, so I’m not surprised some feel they are being targeted. (Raging is not an acceptable response to inconsiderate driving BTW)
My observations of the last 20 years The standard of driving has, dropped significantly. Exactly what that looks like from what I observe is...... 1/ People tending more and more to make up their own road rules, having contempt for or ignorance of the actual road rules. 2/ People commonly fail to anticipate stages of their journey, leading to unexpected and very unsafe last second decision making. 3/ Growing and ongoing disregard for traffic signals! Absolutely insane behaviour! 4/ Driving as if no one else is on the road, drivers operating in their own little world. 5/ Lack of courtesy by working with other drivers in the interest of overall traffic flow. 6/ Contempt for, or ignorance of road line markings that are their for a reason, to warn drivers and help keep people safe. 7/ Speeding. People sook about speed limits. But the bulk of our driving is within suburbia. It is almost impossible to save or gain a time advantage. 8/ Very fundamental driving mistakes, like ending up on the worng side of the road, going the wrong way on a one way road, failing to be aware of surroundings and obstacles. 9/ Driving in an overly timid or overly agressive mind set. A lack of confidence or over confidence can be equally as dangerous. 10/ People seem less inclined these days to have an awareness or appreciation of their vehicles physical dynamics and limitations. 11/ The standard of learner driver instruction is anecdotally at least, flawed based on many new drivers I have spoken to, with them very commonly saying the focus was more on passing their driving test rather than teaching them to "drive". They usually say their parents gave them better on road driving education. 12/ The disturbing and irrational contemporary irrational phenomena of the "anti-government" sentiment movement. You know the type, that think ALL regulation is aimed at them personally and they are going to resist it at all cost, including at the cost of their own safety as well as those around them. Stupid is as stupid does. 13/ The problem of drivers that are past their best and should not be driving anymore. Think of a single car embedded in a house or shop front for example. Then throw in the spice to the recipe........... Mucho morons in big hideous vehicles ready to go troppo in an instance at anything that they irrationally think is a slight against their day. Drugs, as well as drugs, as well as drugs. The underlying persistence of drink driving. Unlicenced driving (including in unregistered vehicles) As per this video content, idiotic and ignorant political ideology being applied against drivers and their property, EV haters for example. The failure of people to be driving insured. It's probably not an exhaustive list, but I have bored everyone enough at this point. Throw it all in the pot, stir well and simmer for three seconds and you have road rage. More to the point, often we have tradgedy for someone!
I drive a Mustang Mach-E and I’m not sure most people even recognize it as an EV. I did have an ICE Mustang driver try to get aggressive with me once but I was able to put her in my rear view pretty easily 😂
@@Thunderbuck I've had the same issue with Mustang drivers as I own a HSV GTS. They tend to lose the back end when pushed so I keep my distance.
But geez, 120km a day just to take kids to school? Stuff that.
Short term, special circumstances. Thanks for watching.
Maybe remove the EV badge next to the ZS badge as well. Not much you can do about the government-mandated blue EV sticker on the number plate, of course.
I've been driving an EV for over a year and can't recall any road rage directed at me. A few "demonstrative" overtakes and one-way drag races at traffic lights, but meh.
I think having that Electric Vehicle enjoy the silence, is abit cheesy and is looking for trouble from the pea brains we share our roads with. I've had my Ioniq 28 which has the electric word on the back and have had no issues, (have had tailgaters but this is without a doubt every car I've owned in my past 30 years of driving). I have been driving this car nearly 5 years. I think my wife has more issues with her little Picanto with tailgaters and peabrains in they big 4WD's and trucks.
ive had road rage in my MG4 X power ( but i think its been because they dont like to be told they cant do WHATEVER THE LIKE ON THE ROAD ) Im usually the one slight road raging at idiot drivers .. We all know the ones driving way under the limit , cant figure out what the lines on the road means by driving in between them , failing to indicate , I love the sheep and usually give them a long honk who just keep pulling into a intersection blocking oncoming traffic .. simple idiot stuff that if they payed more attention to driving instead of everything else they wouldnt do stupid things !! Failing to keep left unless over taking on the freeway is my biggest annoyance !!
Australia follows the US in most tech developments. The rage is general & widespread & growing. The stupid are exploding spontaneously. Australians are so obese that they need $80K SUVs to carry them around & they are too lazy to look left or right or even process what they see if & when they do. They barge thru. They use oncoming lanes & change multiple lanes without checking. It's not about EVs.
Stuff it. Being stereotypical here. I have been abused often by the same type of vehicle owners… large SUVs & Utes. I don’t own an EV. I have been abused for slowing down on a residential street whilst entering my driveway! Yes, I indicate. It’s ridiculous. Do they expect me to pull the handbrake whilst I drift into my driveway? Had a guy in a Ute approach my vehicle for stopping and indicating to park my vehicle. I think they feel invincible or their tools will be used to save them? There should be greater policing on our roads. Authorities relying on cameras only these days is an issue. Take your EV stickers off and see if it improves.
in most states Vic included its illegal to remove the EV stickers or to the point not display them on the number plate .. while im not sure the reason i assume its for fire brigade to know what type of car they are dealing with in an emergency !!
Nope, more about bogan Brisbane than EVs in any of my experiences in driving EVs in the last five years.
Suggest the road rage increase around mornings & school pick-up time relates to people being (more) stressed by hard time deadlines, Eg Getting to work/job on time, picking up kids, etc., and being delayed by ever increasing traffic. Also think road rage is generally increasing because of the increased stress from cost of living pressures. Tradies especially trying to fit in that one extra job to get extra money. Then running late to pick up kids & boiling over at anyone who, in their perception, delays them by a millisecond. As to the why EVs in particular become the target for road rage? Likely a perception by road ragers that the cost of living pressures from inflation are solely the fault of the current govt. And thinking that EV drivers are all woke leftards who vote Labor or Greens - in their logic making the EV driver responsible for their financial pressures. As to why 30 something males in particular. Probably because an EV left them in their big V-6 4x4 duel cab ute in its wake when going from a standing start when the lights turned green - and now their masculinity is threatened by any & all EVs.
Cost of living has to be a major factor. I mean what hasn't gone up in price in the last 12 to 24 months? I don't know about other major cities but here in Sydney the rental market is a complete joke. I couldn't imagine having to be young again and have to rent now.
Murdoch spreading disinformation on Sky is fuelling the hate.
I find the absolute WORST drivers out there are dual cab/4WD ute drivers, especially those wearing hi-viz!! I tend to drive to work early in the morning, and most cars on the road seem to be these types of drivers. I tend to stay away from them and just let them go their own way.
Sadly the Australia media is to blame in part for whipping up EV fud and portraying EVs as some Chinese spy device. There is then the Redneck element and emission spewing young 4WD and Ute owners. Sad you are doing this but can see the rational.
I've seen as well as experienced this behaviour over the last 10 years in my 25 year career as a professional public transport driver. The authorities are too weak to tackle these particular matters head on. Firstly when driving highways where speeds are generally between 70km - 100km/hr , very few motorists adhere to the correct speed. I always noticed that was this aggressive , intensional bullying of larger off-road vehicles with huge lumps of steel dangling of the chassis trying to intimidate the smaller vehicles to either go faster or get the hell out of their way. A highway patrol or visionary cameras could deter these idiots who consistently flout the law, better still crushing the vehicle for scrap, but I guess we're to soft. I haven't seen or probably will see a politician, or a judicial person that has been willing to tackle these issues that haunt every descent motorist on a daily basis. Come on, get your act together Australia.
Seems the problem is isolated to your region.
Thanks for watching. Comments suggest problems in other areas as well.
