Okay, this is a slightly off-brand video calling back to the launch of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While I usually focus on forecasting and analysis, I also think there's space now and then just to sit back and be wowed. I've been sitting on this video for a year and it still makes me smile. It's easy when looking back with a critical eye to forget the sheer joy of something new. If this video...

Shuntaro Furukawa has announced that more information about the next Nintendo console, the successor to the Switch, is coming. You make an interesting point of Nintendo reusing to be used in other games. It would make games like botw and totk more cost effective if they use the technologies they developed for those game into new games.
Yarn would be boring and yarn games have never done well. Toy has already been done both by mario vs dk and original smash bros.
I wish you had commented on your old comments more haha I enjoyed it but I still missed many classic Zelda elements. Shrines aren't very motivating long term.
When visual entertainment is mentioned it includes movies and TV (in live-action and animation), but also can mean graphic novels (manga, comics, illustrated children’s books). This likely references the previous Dyhamo Pictures acquisition that got rebranded into Nintendo Pictures.
How did the Pikmin 3 Deluxe sell in Japan in the beginning? I think the massive ad campaign in Japan was a big factor for the success of 4. I like that Nintendo stays true to Japanese culture and not pander only to "international audience" (whatever that means). I think the game awards aren't important anymore. Just a little feather in the crown.
I could see Nintendo utilize Shiver in a similar way as Sony does with their XDev Studio, where the main focus is to co-develop third party titles releasing on Nintendo Systems. This could be a great way for third party studios to utilize the Switch 2 hardware
I was reading that they initially worked on their own titles like a decade ago. I think it would be nice if they got a chance to take a swing at a little Eshop game down the line!
when are they aquiring Frye
or what about big man
As a Floridian, I'm so happy we have a nintendo affiliated studio here
Shiver said they were working on an original ip which adds another first party franchise to Nintendo’s library Wonder what kind of game it is
8:03 I coined the term olive branch studio
Interesting take, acquiring the leadership team... Question: what is your name? I'd like to thank you for your insightful videos but can't just say "thank you, John" or Mark, Alan, etc.
Given how seldom Nintendo aquires companies, this is a very interesting one.
I definitely agree with you that they probably wanted this team because they wanted to increase support for potential ports to the switch. A lot of third party games were pretty big on the switch, specifically 'cozy' or more casual games, and that's something they likely want to keep going. This also can probably help them get bigger games onto the platform. Now, this is a very out-there possibility, but I also wonder if they might want to use this studio to port over their own games. Very specifically, I'm talking about games made for the next console being ported over to the switch as a cross-gen release. If the next console is at about ps4 pro levels of quality (which is a rough estimate but the best we have right now), then I think that a port is doable. This means that the team can focus on taking advantage of all the new tech without having to hold themselves back, like they've had to do for other cross-gen releases, but it would still be a cross-gen release. This would also make the difference between the two versions more noticeable, likely, which could act as a way to encourage sales for the next console. Anyways. I see lots of flaws with what I said, mostly about how the timeline of game development wouldn't really line up with this if they wanted to do cross-gen title(s), if they even wanted to do cross-gen titles, so I'm putting this idea in the category of 'interesting to think about and technically possible, but probably not true'.
That's a really interesting idea. After all, Just Dance continued releasing annually on the Wii until very recently so there could be a demand for this sort of thing for a certain type of game.
I was looking forward to this video once I found out about the news
There’s kind of a bitter irony that the developers of Scribblenauts Showdown ended up being acquired by Nintendo but not 5th Cell, the original creators of Scribblenauts (as well as Drawn to Life). A good chunk of gaming in my youth was dedicated to both Super on the DS (as well as DtL: The Next Chapter) and Unlimited for the Wii U, so to see Shiver flaunt their mediocre Scribblenauts spinoff game on their website and get promoted to being a first party Nintendo developer makes me unreasonably sad.
It's possible that Nintendo acquired them not for their developing games, but for their porting capabilities, which is why it is possible you're seeing it the wrong way.
@@stripedrajang3571 I agree that Nintendo bought Shiver primarily for porting and not for their spinoff skill set, and I’ll also admit they’ll probably do some decent port work, but I’m still upset by the way things have worked out for very personal and silly reasons. 5th Cell went from being a compelling Nintendo-focused third party developer to a gutted company on its last breath, while Shiver went from being an unnoticed spinoff/port assistant developer to becoming a part of/an assistant to Nintendo’s first party. Neither Shiver nor 5th Cell are at fault here, as they were never in control of what’s happened to them, but I still feel that the fate of each company is deeply ironic especially given their relationships to Scribblenauts.
Although I don't know much about Scibblenauts nor Shiver nor 5th Cell, I think I can relate with a situation similar to this, but at a much larger scale, with Nintendo and RareWare.
Nintendo getting this gen’s Wii ware shill to barf out ports lol.
I really enjoyed your insights into how the acquisition could be used.
I also find it interesting that their landing page says they focus on "original IP as well as big AAA titles" Seems the only console game they've developed so far is Scribblenauts Showdown (not an original IP, but a unique type of game for the series) Makes me wonder whether or not they have any original ideas in the pipeline and whether or not Nintendo will let them see them to completion or not.
Nintendo really is the king of gaming. Everyone else thinks the only way to make money is expanding their budgets, closing studios and bet everything on graphical fidelity. But Nintendo know that what’s important for games is fun. Not the amount of As your franchise has.
Absolutely. I said the same thing which why they make the best first party games hands down and have sales numbers the other two only could wish for especially with shit box doing so bad they had to go they party. Nintendo always focuses on the most important thing of all. The fun factor. Not how to make a system worthless by moving games to PC, not releasing one game a year like Sony, not having garbage nonsense woke shit like fat uglified woman because omg I'm today's world it's bad to enjoy a pretty girl... No, they focus on the most important thing. The fun factor.
I do wonder what Panic Button is up to - they were pretty active in the early days of the Switch, and their name would come up a lot. Recently, however, I haven't heard anything.
Nintendo overpriced tech !
If you're broke just say so.. 😂
@@kolz4ever1980 😂
Well, Nintendo is a not into losing a lot of money for each console sold. It's just not their style of business.
Really? I disagree. I think that they are the best budget console company out there currently. I can get a switch lite right now for only $200, and that's without looking for any deals or anything- *and* it has a large library and fantastic games. For the price, it provides very good quality. I quite literally could not get a gaming device for cheaper than $200 right now, unless I know lots about computers and am willing to source and then build parts, which is a lot of effort, or if I want to get something low quality with a limited (probably retro) library. Even their basic switch is just $300, which is a pretty good price. I will give it to you that some of their accessories can get pricy. But really, compared to industry-wide pricing, Nintendo is very affordable.
I hope they expand their publisher portfolio beyond WB now that Nintendo has embraced them. I also wonder what kind of technical know-how they'll gain from working with Panic Button now that Nintendo owns them. That might help out a lot.
AlphaDream and Vanpool are literally told like "yeah, we don't need the paperwork, come around to work on Mario Kart".
Wild you don't have 50x more subscribers than you do. You make excellent content.
I think another thing worth noting is that John Schappert apparently had some sort of friendship with Iwata - he was the one to present DICE's Lifetime Achievement Award to the late Iwata, with Reggie accepting the award on his behalf, and spoke a bit on Iwata's impact and loss, stating that "my friendship, admiration, and respect for Iwata is so great." So there is more of a prior connection than initially appeared to be the case. Given the circumstances as well, maybe it's possible that Nintendo was partly moved to acquire Shiver as a favor to Schappert instead of seeing them wind up closed by Embracer Group? Of course there's other merit to owning Shiver, but it wouldn't be the first time Nintendo made such a purchase simply as a means of paying back an individual or organization who'd greatly benefited them. When the Seattle Mariners were on the brink of being moved to another city, Hiroshi Yamauchi made the call to acquire a majority stake in the team so they could remain in the area because he saw it as a way to give back to the area that'd allowed Nintendo to set up shop in the US. Nintendo's leadership may be fairly different now, but perhaps a similar philosophy is at play here.
I believe this is a fairly common mentality among Japanese executives, they have a very collectivist culture over there so paying back people who've helped the company is not uncommon.
Fantastic post - and I agree. I think those long-cultivated personal relationships are often at the heart of Nintendo's dealings.
If I may... You might also look into past relationships with Nintendo and ArtX (now AMD) along with other topics I myself are very much interested in knowing more of. For example, why did Nintendo not simply buy Capcom and Atlus when these companies where in need of capital, or at least buy out Ip's that have had trying history on their platforms. I like how Nintendo see more potential in investing the actull people behind the sucessfull studios/developers rather than just buy a company. But then again why did they leave AMD for Nvidia? Was it bcoz the key people they trusted left the company or was it simply a security reason? These kind of questions are very interesting in my opinion.
Before watching this it's my belief that Nintendo only bought Shiver to secure a steady stream of ports for the next console. Panic Button is also a studio known for Switch ports however Panic Button was not at risk of going under so there was no need to secure that studio.
Finished watching. Haha, looks like we figured the same thing. Nintendo not only has to worry about its own games but it's console ecosystem and ensure third parties have an easier time with their new console.
Not quite. More that they have a use for that foothold in the Western market, like recruits through Next Level Games. Company assets are very minimal to "secure" but it's a big problem even getting anybody to APPLY. Especially when in USA it's legal to profit and pirate games as long as it's not ON the market, like adSense and google just advertise for your Patreon. Then FTC comes to take Nintendo down if they actually HIRE somebody, who "learns to make emulators" on the "open" source community. Universities do the same thing, coming from Ivy League literally just means you used the libraries that are their private property and ONLY sellable in the brains of Ivy Legaue graduates. Come from community college and it's stolen IP to possess work skills. Gotta love capitaliSTS that Marx identified and invented a word for.
Yea nintendo doesnt just acquire companies cuz they can. it's only if they see an opportunity to really. Monolith, nextlevel games, and now shiver were all companies that were prime time. Compared to alphadream or rare, despite their histories, there wasnt really an incentive to buy them (tho luckily from what i heard alphadream employees did get hired and microsoft did end up buying rare)
Also, not mentioned as a premise, but porting games also means you have acquired at least some experience in developing for those genres. Another angle, then, could be that Shiver will be helping out with a fighting game or an open world game.
All the "AAA" games that were broken on arrival on Microsoft and Sony's consoles, including the games that had big budgets and still were considered failures may see the light of day on Nintendo's next gen console.
The switch 2 will be the holy grail
Yay Forspoken and AC Bloat games 🤢
Hi
Hello. 🤗
I really appreciate all of your deep and incredibly insightful videos. I can tell you put a lot of time into these. I would love to see someone like digital foundry hire you to do a Nintendo Corner for them.
I will only play Totk at 60fps because after playing Botw for 100 hours I have had enough of how slow and bad it felt, hopefully next year with the switch 2!
what do you think about the aquisition of shiver by nintendo?
My next video will cover this - up in a few hours.
100+millions USD for the amazing world like Hyrule is still too cheap comparing to fast-food Hollywood movies.
prime 4 is definitely gonna be a display of the next systems power and if it had online multiplayer thatd be crazy. Ur vr theory is really good and now that i realize it its what im hoping. a sold seperately VR would be amazing and it might help vr gaming reach critical mass. i can imagine prime 4 being vr compatibile. i hope it isnt open world though
With how good mario kart 8 deluxe sold and how long its been im expecting MK9 to be life changing XD
Nintendo working with J&J. We are so screwed in the next 20 years.
Correction* “How Pikmin Broke Bad”
Wait an minute. Does this mean, that there could be Developers at Nintendo, who spend probably 10 years, a whole damn decade of their life, on working on this two Zelda games? That would be wild.
damn it man you just reminded me that ardman just ran out of its modeling clay because the guys you supplied them were shutdown. so the company's future is uncertain...
I loved Pikmin 4, but I can't help but feel it strayed a bit too far from what made the first three games great. It also feels a bit more janky, especially in regards to Pikmin movement. I hope they try to go back to the roots a bit for the next installment.
So glad that i've found your channel - proper quality analysis
There are three things I fear regarding AI: - Human beings' work being fed without their consent to AI programs - People losing their jobs after their own work was fed to an AI program as they are not needed anymore - The inevitable loss of creativity and dull repetition in game design if AI becomes more and more common in games. Not every game should be a rogue like, not every game should be minecraft, and I hate the idea of soulless NPCs talking like chat GPT in my Zelda games!!
Nice video!
They will feed their own assets in to ai and that's how they will use it in development, while for hardware they will use for upscaling, frame gen, and to improve on compression. They will also bring back mii's that are ai avatars and you can communicate with them. They also might make a games with ai.
Nice video!
