Quality Control: The Downfall of American Sedans
Quality Control: The Downfall of American Sedans
Welcome to "The BrakeDown," where we dive deep into the intriguing world of cars, news, and reviews. In this episode, we unravel the story behind the "Quality Control: The Downfall of American Sedans."
🚗Why American Sedans Fell From Grace 🚗
At one point, driving a sedan was synonymous with American culture and consumerism. But over the past 40 years, American car makers have struggled to keep sedans in the game. While they've excelled in producing SUVs and pickups, they couldn't meet consumer expectations for sedans, largely due to competition from Japanese manufacturers like Honda, Toyota, and Nissan.
The Dominance of Japanese Cars
These Japanese brands have revolutionized the sedan market, leaving American manufacturers baffled. In this video, I explore why American car makers couldn't figure it out, despite their efforts. We’ll look into the historical context, quality control issues, and the relentless rise of Japanese efficiency and reliability.
The Decline of American Sedans
In recent years, we've seen a significant decline in American sedans. Icons like the Malibu, Impala, Fusion, and Chrysler 300 have disappeared, making way for SUVs and crossovers. But why did this happen? And more importantly, is there any hope for the return of the American sedan?
A Journey Through Automotive History
We'll start by understanding what a sedan truly is, tracing its roots back to the early 1900s. From the first American sedan by the Dureya brothers to the rise and fall of major American car brands, this video takes you through a captivating timeline.
The Malaise Era and Beyond
The 1970s and 80s marked a period of struggle for American sedans, known as the Malaise Era. Poor quality control, the Clean Air Act, and the 1973 gas crisis exposed the weaknesses in American cars, paving the way for Japanese dominance.
The Rise of Japanese Efficiency
Japanese manufacturers like Toyota and Honda focused on quality control and efficiency, creating reliable, fuel-efficient vehicles that American consumers couldn't resist. This shift in consumer preference led to the dominance of cars like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
Can American Sedans Make a Comeback?
As we transition to electric vehicles, there's a potential for sedans to regain popularity. With better driving dynamics and a sleeker design compared to SUVs, sedans have a unique appeal. But it all depends on consumer demand and a shift in market trends.
Join us on this fascinating journey as we uncover the factors behind the downfall of American sedans and explore the possibilities of their return.

Other than the outrageous pricing. The Z is basically a older model Z with cosmetic changes. Might as well get a 350 or a 370 Z. Mustang Dark Horse for around the same price would be a better choice in terms of getting a car with modern tech, more creature comforts, manual transmission for the special trim(manual in a new Nismo Z has yet to be officially confirmed as far as I know, but there are strong rumors, the last time I've heard), more power, nicer exhaust note due to the V8. I would even look into a Lexus IS 500 F Sport before looking into the Z even though it is a sedan. I have to give the Z thumbs down. 👎 👎

Awesome video! Kinda sad to see sedans getting the short end of the stick right now, but they will definitely not disappear completely. Especially if we're talking about higher-class vehicles, I bet seeing the current I7 as a hatchback will be pure nightmare fuel! 😂 Though I can see how they're trying to minimize their presence, since even the EQS, electrified a-la S-class is a liftback, and not a sedan. But again, their complete extinction is very unlikely!

The first guy in your video is just a lowlife car dealer who sells junk boxes to poor unfortunate souls I have seen him on social media spewing is uneducated self which is embarrassing to watch LMFAO!!!. Volvo is very well known to the world, there is no arguing that it’s funny how Volvo has always appeared in many movies TV shows since the early 70s. Volvo’s been well used in the entertainment business/industry. Americans and Westerners are well known to be followers and they will do whatever is popular at that given time they follow trends. Right now SUVs are the new trend and crossovers so of course they’re going to jump on the bandwagon with that and only buy those. However, many Americans if they do want to spend a little extra money, they will primarily buy a BMW or a Mercedes because they want to show off even though those cars are built like crap and die or develop serious problems at 70k. I know this because I grew up with a dad who is a mechanic. These people literally supported my dad and my family growing up with food on the table lol! It’s amazing how people will spend all that money just so that they can look a certain way to other people even though they know that those cars are built like crap and find out it was never worth from the beginging. However, we do want to be different! We don’t wanna be mainstream People Who drive, Hondas and Toyotas and look like everyone else. Volvo was never a cookie cutter car company and the majority of their customers are long term loyal car owners the only car company I've seen come close to Volvo with loyal owners is Subaru the rest of the people just go to different brands every 3 years thinking they will get something better!

I'm a sedan and coupe guy myself. I never like SUV's and most people don't know how to drive them *cough ...woman *cough, but seriously though it really should require a drivers license endorsement like a CDL does, as most of them aren't aware their a bigger vehicle + can flip over easier. People who drive them solely rely on the back up camera and don't know how to use their mirrors in tandem.

Well, I think there's an argument to be made that the new Buick Envista is a kind of a higher drive position, fast-back sedan. GM calls it a cross-over - but it's really more like a different kind of American sedan for the future, than a cross-over or SUV.

American sedans will return if the economy gets better. A lot of people can only afford one car, and if you can only have one, then you're going to pick something that maximizes practicality above all else, which usually means an SUV or corssover.

My neighbor had a last Gen Malibu, a Dart, and a 200. He had so many issues with every single one. Saw them broke down on the side of the road a few times. Heck he even had a rental Camry and I saw it broke down once. So maybe ignorance plays a factor. But the issues he had made it obvious not to buy American anything. He has a Mazda3 now. Seems to work okay. Was in a Fiesta once and I thought it was one of the worse things evern the interior was just falling apart with basically no use. Its materials and build quality were so low just existence made it rot away. I drove a last gen Chevy Cruz and it was so bad. The interior wasnt 10 years old but the plastics were falling apart. The shifter was the most flimsy cheapest thing I ever touched. The car was so low it couldn't get into the drive way. A problem many sedans suffer. Automakers are so desperate to make them look sporty they become very impractical pushing people to more reasonably shaped CUVs. If you see old sedans from the 40s or before they are higher up and about as tall as many CUVs. Just more practical. It seems consumers wish to return to such proportions. The Cruz wasnt very comfortable and had very little glass and felt like a dungeon to me. Even larger sedans in my experience arent at all comfortable. I think American brands also literally make no or very small profits with sedans and cars. If you look into reports, wording, and interviews many of them talk about how unprofitable or small the profits were on cars. I guess they just have decades of baggage with unions and suppliers and inefficiency. They barely make any American made cars anynore and still struggle with costs. Even their trucks have very low build quality and interiors fall apart. But truck buyers stubbornly dont care. When I asked a guy why his top of the line F-150 had shaky door panals and flimsy materials he said oh its a ford I knew that before getting it.

I think people are very willing to buy a 50k three row SUV/CUV with a mainstream badge. But nobody, especially here in the US, wants a 50k sedan from VW. They dont really have the best brand image and have fallen way behind even the Korean brands. Many of their models have had declines in sales. The car makes no sense, too. For a car to be this large with four doors yet a sloping roof that will have rear occupants heads hitting? It's a hard sale. Its a big car, yet not practical as a people hauler. More and more sedans have sloping roofs that make it a miserable experience sitting in the back, so by the end, the use of having rear doors makes little sense. You're better off with a coupe if you want driving dynamics and style. A 50k wagon, minivan, CUV is much more desirable place to sit in the back off than a 50k coupe sedan.

American brands also don’t care about brand recognition. Since the 60’s you could buy a Corolla and can still get one today. Chevy goes from Nova to Cavalier to Cobalt, to Cruze. Then there are the ones in between like the Sonic, Spectrum, Prizm, and those are just the compact cars. The same can be said for the Subcompact, midsize, and full size. An Accord is still an Accord, a Civic is a Civic, a Camry is a Camry, an Elantra is an Elantra, a Sonata is still a Sonata. There is a huge value in long term name recognition. Your great uncle may have had a Corolla, your mom’s first car may have been an Elantra, and you can still buy one of them for yourself, especially if they have fond memories of those cars.

Ever since the 7th gen, the first few years of an Accord redesign seem to be more of a “miss” for Honda (e.g., the pre-refresh 7th gen with that bleach-blonde bad-built Buick-looking booty and the 8th gen with that late 90s Camry-esque “Rubbermaid” looking front end). 🥱 The 10th gen sorta grew on me; but that droopy rear end - while it works on a W222 S-Class - doesn’t do it for me on that Accord. It just doesn’t have the taut look of some of the predecessors. Although, I do like the rear end of the 2024. It’s just that front end, the proportions, and general lack of character for me. Certain years of the Accord just had this “vibe” 😎 that is missing from the current generation. I love the vibe of the late 80s LXi, all of the 90s Accords (along with the early 2000s), and the 9th gen (especially towards the end with those LED headlights, front indicators, and that slim running strip for the rear tails 😘🤌). Those Accords had great proportions and detailing in their designs. The current one is just so anonymous to me. I would buy a 2017 Accord Touring model over the 2024 model. The 2017 is the last really good-looking Accord to me; but that’s just my opinion. 😌

    • @BrkDownMedia
      @BrkDownMedia 5 днів тому

The 9th Gen Accords were the most handsome. The 10th Gens looked the most sporty next to the 3rd gen of the 80's. I think Honda just has to put more emphasis on the Accord and lower the price by 3k and they've got a hit.

Sedans are gone for the most part is because they figured out how to cheat EPA guidelines with trucks and bigger profit margins for SUV, CUV and PU.The US brands made them crappy on purpose as well IMHO. The last few sedans were decent (Fusion, Malibu, the 200 was junk)I traded my 3G TL Type S and got the RDX. This is my first new CUV but it drives like sedan and I think they are more versatile than sedans. Lastly I like wagons as well but they have the same stigma as minivans.

I love my Arteon and I'm glad its so rare! Stage 2 tuned, Maxton Design full lip kit, Rotiform wheels, and Milltek exhaust. It really turns heads and is fun to drive!

ha - thanks for the vid. We had a 2005 for a number of years - was it wonderful? No. But other than a single fuel injector that needed replacing it worked great. Solid, efficient transportation.

It’s too big for most markets and there isn’t an estate version for dog owners. It isn’t sold in Europe and is practically an American, and possibly Australian, market product. All Hondas in Europe are hybrids now anyway, with the exception of an electric car that is too expensive.

What do you mean the FRS isn't sporty? It's one of the best handling cars ever made. It is fast when the road isn't a straight line. People don't understand why Scion exists but never question why other manufacturers do the same exact thing. GM has had Chevrolet, GMC, Pontiac, Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile, and Saturn. There are others, but they are from other countries that GM has owned or been affiliated with and noone ever questions it.

By sporty, I mean it lacked punch. We can argue that it was a handler or power car, but ultimately it lost to other competitors because many didn’t find it as a better choice of buy. It sold better than the BRZ but as I said before the new 86 did a better rendition of the initial formula. I have an unreleased video explaining Saturn, it got cut for the same reason Scion did - Unprofitable.
