Replacing the ignition coils and plug leads on the Lotus Elan M100
The Lotus Elan M100 uses a fairly sophisticated engine management system with a distributerless ignition system. Misfiring on the cars is pretty common and can be caused by all sorts of things but if the culprit is the coils or plug leads here you go. Running on two cylinders is almost diagnostic of a failed coil.

Rebuilding the rear brake calipers and replacing the brake pads on the Lotus Elan M100
Переглядів 5 тис.7 років тому
The Lotus Elan M100 uses rear brake calipers derived from the USA General Motors W body range of cars. It's a single piston sliding caliper and the most common problem is sliders seizing. Here we strip and rebuild them. We also show you how to replace the brake pads for which you'll need a caliper piston rewind tool. The jokes will make more sense if you've been following the series and saw the...

Everything you need to know to make your own interface cable to allow you to communicate with your Lotus Elan M100's engine electronic control unit. What parts to buy, how to put them together and how to install the software and drivers. The same procedure should work for your late 80s, early 90s Esprit for use with Freescan. And presumably the Carlton. 2020 update: The web link for ElanScan ha...

USA special edition version of replacing the soft top on the Lotus Elan M100

This is a replacement version of the video in this series on replacing the Lotus Elan M100's hood especially for our viewers in the USA. Due to an utterly trivial copyright infringement, the original video was blocked in the States. Here then, especially for you, is a replacement copy with the problem edited out. (Have I just committed another copyright infringement by using the title of Jason ...
Replacing the hood (soft top) on the Lotus Elan M100
Переглядів 4,5 тис.7 років тому
In this video we replace the hood on the Elan. Not the thing that covers the engine; that's the bonnet. The soft top that covers your head. I couldn't say it's a job I hugely enjoyed and the neighbours' five year old boy learned a few new words which are destined to get him in trouble when he repeats them at the dinner table. But it is perfectly possible to do it yourself. In fact, it's one of ...
Replacing the heater valve on the Lotus Elan M100

The valve that opens to let hot water flow to the heater matrix on the Elan is a known trouble causer. Here we swop it out for one made for a Volvo 760 which is functionally identical but made of non-corroding plastic.
Lotus Elan M100 buyer's guide

Buyer's guide for the Lotus Elan M100. Bit of background and history followed by things to look out for and what they might cost you to fix. 7:59 A tip given to me by my local Lotus garage. Before refitting the main gear, file the lip down in line with a few of the teeth. I did 3. This then allows the plastic gear to be refitted without any force. It is unlikely you will need to remove it again, but it does make it very easy if you do.

Excellent video. Again. 7 years ago for you, but a current project for me. Glass back in. Can I get the glass to run smoothly up and down? Not a chance. I'm manually helping the glass up and down in the hope that the slightly loosened runner bolts will find their sweet spot(s), tightening the top ones with the glass at the top, lowering the glass and tightening the lower bolts....and it still sticks. Mostly at the opening (back) end of the door. The rear glass runner seems to want to twist. I can't afford another full swear jar. Has anyone else experienced and overcome this?

I have messed around with my cars for years with the emphasis on 'mess' and in all those years I've looked at dozens if not hundreds of on line content to try and find the information you have in your video and I've failed so thank you for going to the trouble to go through the steps for curing rust. I've been looking for this explanation for two main reasons, firstly to prove what I've always believed, you can cure rust and prevent it from reappearing contrary to many opinions I've had from body shops over the years where the headline often seems to be 'it will always return'! Secondly, this information will help me find a body shop I can trust as I'll be able to check if they use a similar process, and before anyone points it out, yes, proving it is another thing! Finally, I agree with Brian Poston, if this video was more generally titled, for example, 'how to cure/get rid of rust permanently' then I too think you would eventually attract millions of views worldwide. I've subscribed and thanks once again!!

A brilliant video I have to add that to ease reassembly I cut the bottom ring of the worm gear in 4 places in the teeth position and it slipped in no bother, I dont see the need for the ring as the thrust washers hold all in place otherwise this video was a great help thks

Exactly the same catastrophic damage that my trim panel has received. I actually found this vid anout halfway through repairing mine but im glad to say my process is just as yours. Except i melted a fine metal mesh into the back face to hold the broken pieces together prior to glassing. The grab handle plastic is much thinner and more brittle than the main panel though so too thin to weld. I used plastic pipe solvent and then fibreglass. Yet to paint the front face though. Great video, and quite entertaining too 😁

Loved the video on rust, this dude could have millions of followers in the U.S. alone if he generalized his videos to simply “car restoration” and a new channel name to match! I could safely bet 5-8 million guys in America, who are restoring something with metal and an engine in their garage, who would appreciate his in depth knowledge of the technical elements and applicable solutions to the processes often encountered on a restoration! Not trying to be a critic, but this video should have 7-8 million views by now! Thanks

Another great video Toby. Im going to have to attack my drivers door soon since its apparent that the front top guide slider has come loose and now punches up through the cheater. But got to say, its no wonder these cars were so expensive to build with an assembly process like this!

A great explanation… Thank you… You lost me when you started talking about fiberglass cars though… I’m driving a Jeep, so I have lots of areas of folded sheet metal… Does the surface rust have to be mechanically removed, prior to using chemical rust removers like muriatic acid and/or chemical rust conversion products, or could you use those products right off the bat? I’m only halfway through your video, so perhaps you address it in the video as well, but I’m also curious as to how oil based rust proofing products, manage to keep the rust away… It would seem that it prevents the oxygen and water from coming into contact with the steel…

Make sure you learn about what they are and what they aren't and that you are ok with it. Most will not tell you that they are much closer to a Geo than a Lotus. Some don't care, but for me, I had to sell the car in less than a year because of that.
