Quick question - I've always been advised to use the Blue antifreeze in the Elan, not the longer life OAT based solutions as the engine design pre-dates LL antifreeze and there might be some adverse chemical reactions with certain parts of the cooling system. Are there pink/red solutions that are not OAT based or is the advice I've received been incorrect? Many thanks, Steve
Good question. Both blue (silicate) and red (organic acid based) antifreezes are covered by the same British Standard which specifies the same maximum corrosion rates for both and covers all the metals used in the M100's cooling system. So I've always assumed red would be fine. However I wasn't certain so when you asked I checked with Lotus Cars. Their response was "As we have not tested OAT on the Elan so [sic] cannot comment on this" so it's probably best to stick with blue. I've commented the video at the appropriate place. Thanks for pointing this out. Yours, humbled.
