Just a dude telling the stories of video games and the people that create them.
How Fable 3 Was Made and Why It Closed Lionhead
This Fable 3 documentary goes in depth of the development of the game and goes behind the scenes of its rushed creation. This documentary will go through all of Lionheads and Peter Molyneux's decisions that were made for Fable 3 and how the game came to be 1/3 of its original size with cut content and rushed gameplay elements. This documentary will then timeline the closure of Lionhead itself as Fable 3 was the very first domino to fall in Lionheads downfall.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the "money as XP" and end money- i mean "morality" system, this game would of been great.
Fable 2 will always be my favorite fable game but 3 has a special place in my heart because I figured out how to beat the game without losing citizens and ensuring a better future. Capitalism. Instead of progressing the story I made pies and slowly bought property. While my passive wealth accumulated I made more pies. I only progressed the story when I ran out of property to buy. Repeat as the game progresses. When I became king, I was no different from my brother but I used the money raised from increasing the rent and shop prices to the max to preserve the lands, purify the water, renovate, honor deals, and improve working/living conditions. After I beat the game, I lowered the rent and shop prices because at that point what would I really need the money for? Tldr I beat fable 3 and ushered in a communist utopia by being the most ruthless capitalist as I could.
Biggest L take fable 2 was amazing. Not as good as the first but still fantastic
Fable 3 combat was one button combat so that definitely didnt work... at all.
assesibility
If it came out today they would have made so much money 😂. games have fallen so much todad point and example Dragon Age Veilguard 😂
Good video. Such a shame the game didn't reach it's full potential. But such is the legacy of Fable.
Microsoft should pause killing the Halo franchise for a bit in order to give us Fable 4.
Crazy how different gaming is now.
So basically PM was just too old by this point and was way out of touch with what gamers of that time actually wanted. I'm sorry but every quote from him in this video just makes me scream "WTF???" Hand holding makes you feel more powerful???? Are you kidding me? Removing health and experience? No traditional menus? Dumbing down everything so that a toddler can play? What on earth was this guy smoking? It's no wonder I hated Fable 3 so much. It honestly sounds like the guy just wanted to make a boring interactive story/sim game, devoid of any actual rpg elements or gameplay. Like go ahead and do that...with a new game, not your existing franchise and destroying it.
After every fable entry he went further and further down the "casual" route. I really think his end goal was to just sell to a large amount of people and to him, specifically targeting people who weren't gamers and getting them into games was the answer.
i adore the soundtrack for fable 3
Its great! First tike i heard it was making this video lol
Its a great game for couch coop. My wife and i like playing it
oh thats cool! Didnt know people were still playing fab3 in 2024
@ todays games do not have an emphasis on couch play anymore. So i picked up a old xbox last week and a handful of games including fable 2 so my wife an i can play those golden age games together.
@@tristondoyle9286 it's true! It was an era that died when online came out. I remember playing fusion frenzy, time splitters , marvel ultimate alliance, halo
I hated Fable 2 being dumbed down compared to TLC. But over time I fell in love with Fable 2 and dream for a PC port one day..
Maybe one day... hinestly dunno why it hasnt gotten it yet, but were in the age of remasters and stuff so maybe itll be coming...
Brotherhood of the wolf is one of my top movies, what a revelation, cheeeers for that
anytime =)
I absolutely loved the Fable series. The games were great and really fun, so I never much understood the complains. That was, of course, until I hear PM talked. The man is, to put it in the most charitable words I can, an absolutely moron. The devs were the ones who slaved away to make the games great, and he was the one who proceeded to ruin everything.
I feel he did genuinely care but he was just attempting to make something for people who just werent interested in games instead of catering to the success and audience they already had. Its like they worked in reverse
Tbh if you want to make the player feel powerful, you've got to do it through game mechanics. Games are an interactive medium, so I don't think that narrative is the way to go here, for example I think having the combat system be more complex and function like a sandbox could definitely make a player feel very powerful. The dumbed down combat in Fable 3 really just isn't it, I also really disliked the road to rule as the way it's designed made me feel like I had a lot less control over my build.
yeah the idea didnt work. PM goal was just to try and market the game to non gamers to try and sell a certain amount of copies ><
A tale as old as time.
It sucks that they decided to scrap the heroes guild and the concept of multiple famous heroes for this game. That was an enjoyable part of the original Fable’s story.
What's also crazy is Lying Peter original said in an interview that the original king/queen in Fable 3 was going to be your hero in Fable 2 ported over. Then you'd over throw your father or mother in a epic fight... we all saw how that turned out.
I never saw this while reading interviews. Interesting
There was a lot about Fable 3 that I really liked. The start of the story was strong, the combat was ok, and the evolving weapons were amazing. Sadly, the story's charm faded halfway through, the combat was too easy, there were too few side quests, and the ending felt forced and hollow.
sums upfable 3 perfectly lol
My favorite series of all time. Including games, movies, books, and television.
it is really great! mayb one day an ending will be created
Dead sun had nothing to do with legacy of kain series, just using the name for a horrible game. Glad it was cancelled
Nothing like two dudes holding hands running across fields
lolol. Just made me think of LoTR
I tried to hate Fable III but I still love it haha
Fable 3 is an okay game without someone screaming in your ear that it’s the worst game on Xbox
UA-camrs and their beloved shitty background music
its literally music from the game, so..
@@GameStudioLore Sure, got nothing against the songs. Just hate the trend of youtubers putting music in their videos because in 99% of the cases its too loud.
@buritomaster was mine too loud? Honest question.
@@GameStudioLore Yeah. It kill the vibe of just chilling and listening to strangers talk about video games
@buritomaster dang aight. I'll keep this in mind and try and lower it. It's odd cuz I keep the decibels rather low, but when editing on my MacBook it sounds louder on the PC then with headphones. Guess I'll go a couple dbs lower. Already at -30. Thanks for the input and thanks for watching
bro I just discovered your channel from the algorithm randomly, but it seems really obvious to me that you put a ridiculous amount of effort into your videos. This deserves so much more views and attention, and I wish you all the best. Amateur tip, I'd advise maybe focusing on more modern/recent games since the algorithm usually recommends those over older boomer games like this.
Thank you so much! Appreciate it! Is fable 3 boomer now =((( Im old!
Going on from here, we have a Fable 4 announced from Microsoft. Peter moved on to create 22Cans, and produced The Cube and Godus. Godus is abandoned incomplete.
Im really interested to see how Fable 4 comes along, if they can somehow recreate the atmosphere of Fable1 in an open world setting, it would be a great start for them bringing the series back
Trying to appeal to casual gamers when Fable is known for being an easy RPG has the most stupidest thing I've ever heard. They didn't even need to do anything to the magic from the first game, it was already pretty good. Why are some of these developers so dumb? Now, this game is piss poor easy. Any and all challenge or fun is taken out of it, which is a shame because Fable 2 looks amazing. I still love the game's aesthetics and overall feel of the world. That part is a step up from TLC plus a few more but this game is flawed beyond belief. There is no reason to ever use magic besides it looks cool not because you need it because guns are insanely overpowered.
yeah its like they worked in reverse lol. usually it starts easy and goes up from there, not the opposite >< Dude was trying to appeal to non gamers
1 piece of gold for 1 person. Our brother did it the evil way and struggled so much. I said, bro hold my Jameson. Did it the good way. Too bad that meant not building the brothel. If you want to play a game, that's very interesting and made by the creators of Fable. Play Kynseed.
Wow it does looksuper fable-y. Ive never heard of that game, thank you
Fable 3 sucked. I never even finished it. Played the other two loads of times
yeah its pretty poor =(
Would love to play as raziel before his punishment !
I love uncharted it's my favorite game series uncharted 4 is my favorite
Uncharted is so good. I recently only played them a few years ago. The story and the cinematics are insane
At least it was on PC unlike some other Fable...
yeah i never got that. It has to be some license issue or something ><
Damn. So it's giving me "The Founder" vibes. :/
Fable 2 was also crap lets be real. Fable 2 didn't even have armor. It sold well because back then you mainly bought stuff based on previous titles. Fable 1 was great so fable 2 was always fonnf to sell Fable 3 didnt get the same benefit since fable 2 was bad. But fable 3 also messed up a lot. The most noticable issue being you have to load like 30 times to do anything worth mentioning. If fable 2 and 3 were just fable 1 but a new area and story both games would have been more successful.
Yeah and thats exactly what PM didnt want to do... He was ultra focused on selling copies rather than expanding upon the already working formula because he thought it was boring.. Like making the game ultra simple wasnt ><
Whoever thought Legacy of Kain's IP needed multiplayer needs to get the teeth slapped out of their stupid head. It's a shame the controversies revolving around Silicon Knights copyright issues were not discussed as they had major impact on the LoK fate.
Monoluex was wrong, people want more of the same stuff they love from the same franchises, to do new stuff u need to create another game but new stuff is what makes games original and amazing iften, we rarely get that these days but its not a good idea to do it with the sequels otherwise people lose interest and trust as soon as they realise they arnt really playing a sequel but a different game just with similar basic appearance.
I do think game sequels need to grow and incorporate new ideas, but it is a fine balance of keeping what made the original so good and creating a new experience.
I just wish the spy had another gun that was good. Yeah it’s good you get a quiet gun with suppressor but you can’t really rely on a small pistol when there are like 1m guards unless you some how got some assassins creed stealth skills
I just recently returned to this game and I just love how they give the hitman all these cool skills and then they just have the loudest gun. I also wish they made it more like hitman games where you can have a skill to camouflage as smth so you can be an officer in disguise. If you think about it, isn’t that the whole point of a hitman ?
indeed! But i htink that would have been a lot ot incorporate for everything else that was already there lol
@ yeah plus they already added disguised characters
I felt like fable 2 was also rushed
I am a wife of a gamer. I watched but nothing of this list seems fun. I played Sea of Thieves with my husband after he begged me to play, thought it was fun but now since the new season he does not like it anymore and want me to play Tarkov but I hate killing others in gaming. Thought I would find something we could play together in this video as he is begging me but there is litteraly nothing. Anyone has advice on something fun like sea of thieves for me? Help
You could try deep rock galactic. Its a co op game where you plays as dwarves mining in caves. Grounded is another chill co op base building survival-esque game. Same with Raft or potentially No Mans Sky.
BETTER THAN SO MANY GAMES TODAY ESPECIALLY FAILGARD and fable3 was actually my favorite fable I think it was only a failure from the devs perspective and that influenced popular casual opinion
One of the craziest things about these games to me was the decision to pull them off PC. I completely stopped following the games when I couldn't buy Fable 2 on PC. Surely the money made from a PC audience would have helped.
Good that we're having the Soul Reaver remasters! I wonder what they plan for Blood Omen and Defiance? Full remake seems to mame sense for Blood Omen 1.
I played 2 and then 3 and honestly I loved both! 3 actually really helped me come to my own in politics, understanding why politicans some times make the choices they do! In the later half of the game, when you become king and your brother the old king explains to you WHY he was such a tyrant, everything starts to make sense, and now you have to face all those promises you made to all those people you recruited! Give the people what they want? Or save the nation! I some how managed to get what I thing was the best ending of the game, a measured split down the middle, the casualties and damage to the nation after the invasion was minimal and yet I was held in high regard in the eye of public opinion! I got to hear my former prime minister Steven Harper speak a number of years later, talking about the 2008 automaker bailouts, see Harper, a trained economist, didn’t subscribe to government bailouts, businesses must survive and fail on their own fruition free from government intervention, see in 2008 America was suffering greatly due to the recession and we honestly didn’t have it all that bad in comparison! but on the day of his birthday, George bush wrote a check to bail out the auto sector, I think it was GM and Chrysler group, who have plants across Canada, notable Chevy in Oshawa and dodge in Brampton! Against Harper’s own convictions on the matter, his training, his belief system, he also issued a bailout to the same auto makers that bush did! He knew if he didn’t they would close up their plants and move them south, hundreds of thousands if not a million jobs would have been lost! In what was already a tough time! It turned out to be the right choice! Sometimes you gotta do what makes sense for the moment and not what your flavour of politics permits! And for that i have a deep approach for fable 3 and Mr Harper!
0:38
Fable 3’s biggest flaw was the outrageous amount of bloom that makes it practically unplayable in the best of circumstances.
just hit me with flashbacks of having to turn the contrast down every time
I loved Soul Reaver. I dunno about Blood Omen, but even though the moment to moment writing is great, the plot itself is weak in SR, very simplistic. I'd say it gets better in SR2, but most people haven't played that. P.S.: Crystal Dynamics always on the wrong side of things 🤦🏻 shame on them
