Cuesta Fire Agate Mine: A Hidden Desert Gem
WOW! I’ve been dreaming of coming here to mine for fire agates for years, and I finally got the chance. Although I wasn't as prepared as I should have been, I know I'll be ready next time and will find many more beautiful fire agates. Plus, I had the delightful experience of petting burros in the charming town of Oatman, Arizona.

Over looked Un Dug Dugway Geodes :Just add water
Переглядів 586День тому
This is my second video from the same trip to Dugway Geodes. In this one, instead of digging, I decided to walk around and do some ground picking. I’m really glad I did because there was so much good stuff just lying on the ground, ready to be picked up and cleaned. This is the perfect way to rockhound if you don't have the tools or the health to dig deep.

    Man, you are brave to even think about hard rock mining, in that weather. Of course, there, that weather is all the time! Maybe not triple digits in the late fall or early winter. Those were some awesome fire agates! The formations and those colors are just beautiful. How do you polish them? Do you contour polished them like they do with the Mexican fire agate? Can you do an episode on polishing them? I think that would be awesome! Thanks Jeff, for always taking the time to explain exactly what you are looking for and how to do it And even better, do it for us, and take us along virtually! It's the only way to mine!💗

      Lisa, I'm not sure. Brave is the word you were going for. I think you meant "Wacko" LOL I for sure will hit it again but I think I'm going to do it in the fall or spring next time, may hold off me next year trip till it cools off and do the south west. The polishing them is still something I'm learning and have been practicing on , next week's video I find my pieces that are great for practice. I love to give folks and idea of what I'm doing and why incase some one else has a better idea and can toss me some pointers and of course vice versa for any one who already mines it and sees what I do and says "Hey why didn't I think of that" And I think I will do a polishing video, it may be wrong but it will be fun lol

      So I'm still learning and have been checking out other youtube videos, some of em I have polished down the more bubbly parts of the chalcedony and then I'm going to start slowly polishing with a rotary tool, that's how I have seen people get the most bubbly looking fire out of them. Next week's video I do a creek walk where I found more but not as nice so I am experimenting with it to see how it turns out. Fingers crossed

      I am a huge fan of the national Audobon Society rocks and minerals book . For free look at the area I would recomend checking mindat.org it will also give you a really good idea of what can be found there. A lot of books like to show pristine museum quality pieces, which can be found but for most of us rockhounder types unless we are underground we probably won't find them (Due to weathering and the such) I also use an old book "The Golden Guide to rockhounding" It's not bad for a cross reference but for a new Rockhound the Audobon Society is very useful. Oh and also Mindat covers the entire world so any place you may look you can type in state name then look for the county you will be in. Good luck I hope you find some AMAZING pieces. 😃

    Thanks for the video! I had an awesome visit in June and highly recommend anyone who’s interested check it out! WAY more copper minerals there than you can find in Michigan’s upper peninsula these days. And make a several days or week roadtrip out of it to visit the surrounding rockhounding & nature lovers paradise. There are many other places to collect nearby for druzy quartz, barite, hematite, galena, etc.

    Will they allow ya to extract the galena on site or do they not allow the breaking of rock

    • @huntingrocks
      @huntingrocks 18 днів тому

      I went before they were fully open so you would have to ask them, I usually don't break rock in the field so I can't give an accurate answer

    Hey, Lord Jeff! I really love those colors. So it transitions from azurite to malachite over time, is that what you said? At some point it must become my favorite color(cerulean). Thanks for sharing the adventure. Can sure hear the cicadas in the background at your home. 😁

    • @huntingrocks
      @huntingrocks 18 днів тому

      Yep it goes through a metamorphosis being a copper mineral it changes from that beautiful blue to a beautiful green. But I have found pieces that are cerulean blue, I have also found pieces that are cobalt blue which made me wonder if I had found cobalt , they were not sadly according to the giger counter I used LOL. The cicades had quited down for a bit but recently they got loud again, guess it was a late hatching brood or something . I like the sound they make

    It is mind blowing how fast those washes fill with water. That's a valid warning you gave. Man, this has us missing the desert. Funny we watched your newest vid first and you mentioned what came first, turquoise the rock or color. 😂 our guess is rock because rocks are heavier than light (as light is what makes color). Therefor, the rock would travel at a higher velocity. Although, it couldn't beat the speed of light, so maybe color would come first? Hm... Lol, anyway, the turquoise is super beautiful. Hoping these Western vids never run out.

      It's an amazing place with soooo much history those tailings piles are hundreds of feet tall and football fields wide there are so many goodies at that place that have not seen the light of day for over 100years ... if ever. And thank you so much for the kind words I just want everyone to be able to enjoy finding treasures, I love it when people find amazing things digging in the ground

    Ok, so we do realize there is a thing called Google, but why use that when you have your hunting guide, Jeff? So... "ok, Jeff! What came first, azurite or malachite?" and here is another.. "Ok, Jeff! Is Disneyland just a giant people trap created by a mouse?". That's all we have for now, but have to say that pyrite piece is epic.

    • @huntingrocks
      @huntingrocks 16 днів тому

      Hahaha Azurite first then over time, it chemically changes to the Malachite. It's all a copper ore, so it turns that pretty green.... Now I'm not sure about free float copper. I really haven't looked into it yet. And Disney is 100% a people trap set by a mouse .... it's a fun, overpriced, overcrowded people trap, but they got cool put put golf soooo I give them a B (-/+) 🤣🤣

      Yes, and no, they have been running it slow to start, this first year, they have been testing the waters. Most of them didn't think it would be as big as it has been.Im thinking next spring they will really start cranking the open days
