In this video I declutter 3 major storage areas in my lounge / dining space that I have been wanting to tackle for some time. It turned out to be a huge task to go through DVDs, laundry items, receipts and an ad hoc collection of household items. But the results were fantastic and it's really simplified my daily life. I also show you some towels that I recently bought for my new apartment. I ho...

    Maybe you should try to come up with a solution to keep your laundry items closer to your washing machine, towels in the bathroom etc… I also live in a small house & things work best for me if everything is were I use the items.

    Hi Lilibet, great job getting all that decluttering and organising done. You tackled quite a lot. I find it so interesting to see the ways you manage your spaces and thee types of things you group together. Moving into a new and smaller space requires some adjustments but this sort of work is continuous as we try out new systems or as our lives change. It can be physically and emotionally tiring. I have some exciting news. We have bought an apartment and our settlement matches our house settlement at the end of the month. We will have much less storage and therefore I have taken note of your organisation. Recently, ecofriend.lia (youtube) said that she didn't think it was healthy to push ourselves to live outside our comfort zone, but that we can live anywhere within in and, when we feel like it from time to time, try something new and a bit less comfortable. Some people are very comfortable living on the edge and need the excitement, not me. High cortisol levels are bad for my health. In my opinion, people are innately valuable and that does not change whatever they do. ♥

    I think you did with this declutter and I've gotten even more ideas from you.I have RA and Fibromyalgia so I make tea and put it in a hot thermos in case I get a flare or fatigue.That way I don't have to make it throughout the day or night. Hi Lilibet, brilliant declutter! The organisation just gets better and better. I didn’t like that saying at all, it felt harsh and judgy (and not necessarily true). Doesn’t suit your simple and honest style at all. The only item that caused a sad reaction was Milly’s big blanket. Not because she used it, which is sweet in itself, but it’s such a lovely blanket and looked really nice on your bed. Just my opinion, hope you don’t mind me saying.

      The key thing you said was “cluttered”. It sounds like you still have too much stuff for your living space.

    • @teawithlilibet
      @teawithlilibet 20 днів тому

      Thanks for your very kind feedback Whitney! Your comment has really got me thinking. To me, my home is still very much a work in progress (remember those messy drawers and my storage cage?). So it's really nice to be reminded that I've actually improved things a lot. I hope you don't mind this very long reply. It's a brain dump of what I've learned so far, which I may turn into a future video. One caveat is that I live on my own. So only have 1 person’s stuff and habits to deal with 😄 My process 1. Identify and prioritise the biggest problem areas in my home and work on fixing on those in order of priority. I have a rolling list of the spaces that I want to declutter/reorganise. 2. As I work through that list I decide the purpose of each and every drawer, cupboard, shelf, surface, corner, open area or wall. This can change over time as my needs change. So I may have to circle back to some spaces that are no longer functioning well. 3. The declutter: - I’m realistic and brutally honest with myself about which items I do and don't need, the items I actually use on a regular basis, and what I can truly fit in each space (this includes furniture and wall art). This step can take a lot of emotional work and it is sometimes quite a while before I'm fully ready to be honest or let go of an item. - I get rid of everything that doesn't fit the purpose that I've assigned to that space. Those items either leave my home or get moved to a more appropriate location within my home. If I don't yet know where they should go, they go into some temporary storage. -If I'm really struggling with decluttering a particular item, I don't force it. I might seek advice from someone who knows me well. Or I'll put it into temporary storage and revisit at a later date. - I make room for items that I like and enjoy that don't have a functional use, e.g. decor and plants - I don't use up all the space. I leave room for doing exercise or a landing place for temporary items that may come and go. For example a space where I can put down grocery or shopping bags when I arrive home. - I set up the space well, so that it is efficient to use and each item can be easily accessed (I use a lot of containers) 4. I do daily maintenance. I go through my whole apartment and do a quick tidy of surfaces, either all at once or sporadically throughout the day. I focus on the most visible surfaces.This might only take 15 minutes in total. If I have more time, I wipe surfaces down to give the apartment that feeling of being extra fresh and clean, with particularly attention to noticeable dust and smudges. I rarely go to bed with a messy house. 5. Finally, I accept that there are spaces in my home that will not be pleasant or efficient to use until I get around to addressing them, e.g. my storage cage. I have short term strategies for clutter e.g. using containers (my white fold up boxes) or a drawer to hide that stuff away until I'm ready to deal with it. The declutter usually gets done when I can't stand the situation any more because it's causing too much stress or time wasting. Perhaps you just wanted to know about step 4? But from experience I've learned that I couldn't maintain my tidy home without all the other steps. Hope it helps! 🤗❤️

    Hi Lilibet, Sorry I missed watching this video live as it would have been great to interact as you were talking about this topic. You made some interesting and helpful points about downsizing and moving to an apartment which, as you know, is of interest to me at this time. You mentioned that you have been downsizing to make life easier and that this was one "why" for decluttering. In my case, this is a major motivation, as well as removing things that bring negative or unhelpful thoughts and feelings. As you say, it is important to get rid of the large items before a downsizing move. We have almost sold all our furniture and are almost camping in our house. Many items we have had for 40 years and they have many memories attached, but letting them go has been easy when we have a strong "why" and also when we meet the lovely people who are taking over their care. We are focusing on the positives and excitement of our move while we push ourselves to do this difficult work. We just try to move a step or two forward each day according to our feelings and energy levels. Good luck with your storage cage. It will be interesting to hear how it all went. I hope it is not too arduous. Look after yourself ❤

    I have decluttered us from 2,000 square feet to 320 so we could live in a garage apt to be next to my mother in-law. I started 10 years ago because I caught the vision of less and then we were able to move in here six years ago pretty easily. My MIL is now 95 and I don’t regret it at all. I have very few regrets about anything I got rid of and continue to make trips to donate more all the time. It never seems to end and we don’t shop and bring much in that is new. For a few months I have been making pottery and some I have wanted to keep so I need to practice the one in one out rule before it becomes too much. I do miss rearranging my furniture. Our apt is the size of two parking spaces with kitchen and living room on one side with a wall separating the bedroom and bathroom. We recently bought a king size bed that is two x long twins. We have to crawl in from the bottom because they just fit. We have to crawl in and out from the bottom and I crawl in again every morning to make them from the top. We are 72 so may age out of this situation since my MIL is in excellent health. I love your apt and a storage room is so valuable. We do have a shed so that saves us.

      Wow Denise that is quite a transition! I'm impressed that you have made such a small space work and are enjoying the benefits of living so simply. Even for me, it's been a joy to have less stuff to clean and maintain. Thanks for watching! 😍
