  • In this video I thoughtfully declutter old furniture that has been with me a long time. And I receive and assemble a gorgeous new dining set and chest of drawers for the bedroom. My sister comes over to help me with unpacking and putting the furniture together. I hope you enjoy seeing how the new pieces lift and improve my space.
I warmly acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands on which I filmed, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. I acknowledge their profound connection to the land, and pay my respects to their elders, past, present and emerging.

Hi Lilibet, How exciting to have such lovely new furniture. Nice choice. Real wood is so lovely and should last you a long time. The only downside is the weight, but you probably won't need to move them around now that you have them in place. Lovely to see the interactions between you and your sister as you worked to set everything up. I know how you felt while you were waiting for it to arrive. We have nearly sold all our furniture and have all our possessions in camping cupboards and boxes. 5 more weeks until we move out and we are still hunting for a new home. I hope you are enjoying your new furniture.

Thanks Rena! Yes it's always fun with Alli. And she's very knowledgable too. So it's a great help to me. I know how much work is involved with your selling things. So well done on nearly selling all your furniture. All the best with the house hunting!! 😍🏡

Your new furniture looks so great!! I’d love to hear how you always keep your place looking so clean. We recently downsized too and are having trouble keeping the place feel clean and not cluttered

The key thing you said was “cluttered”. It sounds like you still have too much stuff for your living space.

Thanks for your very kind feedback Whitney! Your comment has really got me thinking. To me, my home is still very much a work in progress (remember those messy drawers and my storage cage?). So it's really nice to be reminded that I've actually improved things a lot. I hope you don't mind this very long reply. It's a brain dump of what I've learned so far, which I may turn into a future video. One caveat is that I live on my own. So only have 1 person’s stuff and habits to deal with 😄
      My process
      1. Identify and prioritise the biggest problem areas in my home and work on fixing on those in order of priority. I have a rolling list of the spaces that I want to declutter/reorganise.
      2. As I work through that list I decide the purpose of each and every drawer, cupboard, shelf, surface, corner, open area or wall. This can change over time as my needs change. So I may have to circle back to some spaces that are no longer functioning well.
      3. The declutter:
      - I’m realistic and brutally honest with myself about which items I do and don't need, the items I actually use on a regular basis, and what I can truly fit in each space (this includes furniture and wall art). This step can take a lot of emotional work and it is sometimes quite a while before I'm fully ready to be honest or let go of an item.
      - I get rid of everything that doesn't fit the purpose that I've assigned to that space. Those items either leave my home or get moved to a more appropriate location within my home. If I don't yet know where they should go, they go into some temporary storage.
-If I'm really struggling with decluttering a particular item, I don't force it. I might seek advice from someone who knows me well. Or I'll put it into temporary storage and revisit at a later date.
      - I make room for items that I like and enjoy that don't have a functional use, e.g. decor and plants
      - I don't use up all the space. I leave room for doing exercise or a landing place for temporary items that may come and go. For example a space where I can put down grocery or shopping bags when I arrive home.
      - I set up the space well, so that it is efficient to use and each item can be easily accessed (I use a lot of containers)
      4. I do daily maintenance. I go through my whole apartment and do a quick tidy of surfaces, either all at once or sporadically throughout the day. I focus on the most visible surfaces. This might only take 15 minutes in total. If I have more time, I wipe surfaces down to give the apartment that feeling of being extra fresh and clean, with particularly attention to noticeable dust and smudges. I rarely go to bed with a messy house.
      5. Finally, I accept that there are spaces in my home that will not be pleasant or efficient to use until I get around to addressing them, e.g. my storage cage. I have short term strategies for clutter e.g. using containers (my white fold up boxes) or a drawer to hide that stuff away until I'm ready to deal with it. The declutter usually gets done when I can't stand the situation any more because it's causing too much stress or time wasting.
Perhaps you just wanted to know about step 4? But from experience I've learned that I couldn't maintain my tidy home without all the other steps. Hope it helps! 🤗❤️

I have the impression you are slowly replacing all the furniture you brought from your old place. Am I wrong ?

    • @teawithlilibet
      @teawithlilibet  Місяць тому

I had always planned to replace a number of key pieces. But I couldn't move forward with a new sofa or decide about the dining set until the inbuilt storage cupboard near the entrance was completed. I was on the fence about the chest of drawers for a while. But the new smaller one is working out well. No plans to replace anything else.
