Welcome to Garage Story!
I'm in the business of scavenging for old lawn mowers and other small machines, and either parting them out, or fixing them up and selling them for profit. I love the adventure of hunting down discarded pieces of machinery, and turning a piece of trash into a source of income. Laying sod by myself! Will this FINALLY solve my erosion problems? | Garage Story
In this video I'll show you how I laid sod on my side yard to finally stop the hillside from eroding. This dirt work project has been a constant challenge for over 4 years, and hopefully getting this sod down finally brings that story to a close! Of course I'll have to overcome obstacles to get the job done, and my truck will be pushed to the limit, hauling the sod to my house, so follow along and see how it goes!

How I fixed this quirky John Deere X320 and sold it for $1,900 | Mower fix and sell
I own this exact same mower and I love it. It's even been on fire and survived.
Wow! I’ve never had a mower catch on fire, at least not yet…
You drilled out the right amount. If an easy out doesn't want to work, use heat and crayon with left handed drills.
Crayon?
@@garagestory or a candle, or bar of paraffin wax. Wax works way better at loosening a screw. Heat the part, then push the wax into the threads, and it will get sucked in.
Interesting! I don’t know that I’ve heard of that method before. Thank you for sharing it
@garagestory you need a Mapp gas torch with a hose style handle so you can point the flame without tipping the bottle.
Another good video, I enjoy your musical choices.
Thanks to my editor!
SOUNDS LIKE THE ENGINE IS OVERSPEEDING
It might be. I don’t know too much about these.
Lucky Guy
Easy-out bits have always worked well enough for me, you've just got to drill in to the broken piece as straight and centered as possible. Using a center punch to make a divot before drilling helps a lot.
I remember having that same nervousness when I had to get a pallet of sod with my Tacoma.
How’d the Tacoma handle it? They are pretty tough trucks from what I’ve heard!
White lines in the sandstone might be small quartz intrusions.
Interesting!
A welder is so much faster look at some videos
Unfortunately, I’m not really set up well for that right now.
I think we all feel that way😂 thank goodness it came out
Chit,I've heard rumors that those work, but have never seen one actually work because they usually just slip again and again and again or break off in the hole, that I spent bajeezus hours punching and then drilling slightly off center,so I'm always left with a super hard extractor inside of a broken below flush bolt... 😳
I know, right?!! Supposedly you can center punch and get the hole in the middle… but I’ve never been really successful with that. Although, to come clean, I don’t know that I’ve ever used a true center punch for this purpose.
Broke an extractor doing that.
That’s not fun!
Time consuming, frustrating, and expensive!
Good job buddy!
Thanks!
A cheap 120v flux core machine will save you so much frustration my man. Never needing to worry about how to extract the extractor makes a welder worth it's weight in gold.
Yeah, I need to get into welding someday. It’ll be really helpful!
@@garagestory Honestly, I use mine almost exclusively for bolt extraction, and in that application it's literally as easy as using a hot glue gun. I keep a bag full of 1/2 and 3/8 nuts that I've stripped the zinc off of with a vinegar soak just for that purpose. Definitely worth scrounging up $150 for a harbor freight welder and a hood. If you troll craigslist or marketplace long enough you could probably get set up for less than $100.
Good story!
Thanks!
You are awesome man
Thank you for watching! No, there is only One I would consider awesome, and I’m not Him…
I just bought the same one at tractor supply for 230 brand new. Black friday deal.
That’s great!! I hope it works out well for you. I like mine.
Did you check first if it had a bad coil
I can’t remember for sure, but it turned out to have a broken connecting rod.
I've only just come across your channel, as I was looking at that Terramite T5C. Seems like an excellent tractor for the money. Quick question. Why do you have so many dead lawn mowers? Do you do repairs or salvage parts and sell them? Just curious.
I only have 80 or so, is that a lot? 😂 So, yes, I have done parting out and repairing to sell. I don’t have a shop open to the public. The reason I have so many, is I picked up mowers for free for a while and collected them faster than I was able to process them. Then life changed and I had even less time to work on them, so now I either have too many, or I’m set for a few years, lol! Depends on the perspective. The Terramite has been a great machine for the price. Sure, a Kubota B21 would be nice, but if you don’t have the money to spend on one, then a Terramite is a great option. And I think they hold their value fairly well, so selling and upgrading shouldn’t be too difficult. Thanks for watching!
purchased mine and i cant get it to start after 20 pulls
Mine was kind of like that. I had a lot of commenters mention that releasing the pressure from the pump can help (basically pulling the trigger on the spray gun. Repeatedly trying to start can/could build up pressure) Mine started eventually, but I messed with the carb etc. I’m not honestly sure why it didn’t start quickly.
I've been working on small engines my entire life as a hobby for myself and friends. I just fixed my mower. I was mowing and it just suddenly stopped. I was getting fire but it wouldn't run. The mower is 20 years old (New Holland Zero turn). I had some carburetors laying around so I changed it 1st; still no luck. I tested every safety switch, two were bad. I thought that was it; NOPE. Long story short, I changed every component, It would just click, like a safety wasn't engaged. End of story, although I put a new relay in, it wasn't working correctly. So I researched until I found the exact P/N and walla! This one had me bamboozled for weeks.
I’m glad you got it fixed!!
Looks like that trench only took an Hour to dig. Why bother? If you're tired then switch arms.
It would have been nice if it was only an hour. It took many hours spread across many days… 😭
Or, if you’re sold on this idea, you could spray out in front of yourself so you aren’t receiving direct blowback.
It gets kind of hard to hold and aim well if I hold it too far out!
@ right but if you are spraying forward and not straight down you would be directing the blast away from yourself. As is, its bounce back has no place to go but back into your face.
You use the wrong nozzle
What would be the correct nozzle?
@@garagestory a turbo excavator nozzle
Might work a bit better if you pump the water out
Messy indeed
Put that crappy engine on a craftsman mower and sell it too.
Good job.
Thank you!
In my 50 years of wrenching I don't think I broke one wrench. In fact when pulling really hard on a crescent wrench I would only pull on them hard so as not to stress the screw thumb sizing. Only pulling on it hard in the not trying to open the jaws direction.
I don’t think I’ve ever broken a wrench before either. I came up with the slogan kind of influenced by the old ‘break a leg’ phrase used in stage acting (if I recall correctly). And then putting a mechanical spin on it and we get to our slogan of let’s ‘go break a wrench’.
When a valve cover has bolt holes pulled in one must tap them back flat with a hammer. Then don't do it again like someone did before.
I ended up replacing the valve cover. You are probably right that it could have been bent back flat again. Interestingly, just torquing the valve cover bolts down seems to bend the cover. In my opinion Kohler could have designed this a little better….
The only way an air-cooled engine can get vapors into the crankcase is through the piston rings. The head gasket on a water cooled car engine can be a whole bunch of ways. The heads need to be torqued to a specified limit on every bolt.
In theory you could have an internal head gasket leak from the combustion chamber over to one of the oil passages. That would allow combustion vapor into the crank case, if I’m not mistaken. Does that sound plausible?
I noticed recently my steering arms have no pressure against them when I push them out, is this normal? ( same mower as this one)
I cant wait for a new vid
Did you think about checking the valves on the piston that wasn't working it might be valves need adjusting
It was making internal noise, so I was pretty sure it was a broken connecting rod or piston or something like that. Yes, I technically probably should have done more diagnostics like compression test etc., but it turned out I was correct. One of the connecting rods was broken. I actually have a video of tearing down the engine.
I love your tractor mower videos, I'm a fan of tractor mowers, if we knew each other in real life, I'd love for us both to ride on your tractor mower if you'd agree. Keep up the great videos.
Do u still have the extra bag the zipper split on mine and can't find another bag
No, I sold it with the unit.
@@garagestory ok ty ya I'm having a rough time finding one
Have you considered hydro seeding for the areas you didn't get sod covered?
I’m not super familiar with hydro seeding. It seems like in our area people usually do sod or sprigs
@@garagestoryFor diy guys it's an attachment that goes on your hose that mixes the water with grass seed and some form of carrier material that you spray on spots/areas you want covered. It leaves the dirt covered with a green layer that protects the seed as it grows and stops erosion. No clue where you live but here in Ontario it's often used commercially along the sides of highways and other places sod or just plain grass seed isn't a viable option.
That's great to see that sod go down! Looks great, man!
Great Job Brother! You are getting there..As far as getting better with the tractor, The only way to get better is to do it! You got this!
Thanks!
Fun times for laying down the sod keeping the yard from washing away
I love DeWalt. It’s for power tools similar to how Apple functions - super easy to figure out for non tech minded people. I like that I have my stable of batteries that I can switch between all my tools. To use this trimmer, Im planning to have 3-4 batteries fully charged - it’s so easy to switch them out. DeWalt’s cordless power tools give me confidence to teach myself how to use them without being unduly nervous that I’ll lose one of my fingers or limbs. They’re also a good weight for women to use.
Bro you wanted $2000 for it
I don’t have any immediate plans to sell it
Hey is there any chance you still have this mower? I got one in my shop and it's been 2 months, I cannot figure this thing out. Would love to chat with you about it thanks
Yes, I still have it. What’s got you stumped?
@@garagestory It's going to be a long story but at the end of the day there's something going on with the electrical. In order to start the machine I have to disconnect one of the safety sensors on the control lever. But the moment I pull the PTO switch it immediately kills the engine. The other safety switches have been replaced, bypassed. I've actually put a new harness in as well and still same exact issue
Hmmm, those kinds of issues are a pain! This is probably over my head to try to help remotely. But you can drive it around fine, it’s just when you turn on the PTO that it kills it?
@@garagestory If you get a chance and you feel like hearing the rest of the story. Feel free to reach out. I own and operate JC's small engine repair. Very fluent in working on these things but this one has really got me stumped. Look up JC's small engine repair in Knoxville Tennessee. Give me a holler anytime. Thanks
@@garagestory to answer the question more directly. Yes it dies the moment I engage the PTO switch. Now with that being said I have an OEM new PTO switch, ignition switch, and PTO. I'll installed absolutely no difference
This is why you can't trust these sellers
What is?
Fun stuff for sure 😎😄
My Grandad has the EXACT same kind quad, it's just painted black. He bought it in the year 2000, it's surprising because usually you never see this exact same model.
Cool! Did he buy it new, then? Yes, the newer ones seem a little less common. I don’t think they were made for as many years.
Having the motor on the wrong end would be a deal breaker for me.
If money isn’t an issue!
@@garagestory Money is always an issue. That's why I still use my 35 year old Toro 2-stroke. Runs almost as good as ever. And it's lighter than the DeWalt cordless. And the noise it makes isn't as obnoxious IMHO. 👍
