Can I FINALLY fix this Husqvarna Z246 Zero Turn? Briggs Engine Swap!

- Today I have finally decided to swap out the engine on my Husqvarna Z246 zero turn mower. This is the engine that I dismantled last year, trying to fix its governor and valve issues, but I've decided that it's time to cut my losses and just replace the engine. I have a donor mower standing by, ready to test out, so in this video I'll share how to swap engines on a zero turn, and what I learned in the process.
Welcome to Garage Story!
I'm in the business of hunting up old lawn mowers and other small machines, and either parting them out, or fixing them up and selling them for profit. Come along for the ride with my weekly vlogs, and how-to videos.

Had the same engine on my 2005 ZTR 50 had over 600 hrs when I sold it never had any issues with that engine solid running motor✔️
Good to hear! I like the older aluminum intake manifold engines.
@@garagestory Exactly 💯
I like your thought on getting a donor engine from a used mower. I have a Kawasaki. FR 651 V on my Titan and I've said the same thing if it dies I see mowers on FB all the time with good engines but other issues 👍🏾
Hope it sells quick for you. Well done. A crowded shop is not fun.
You can swap the valve covers around To make it work for your application still works the same
Yes, I could have done that, but it would have taken more time.
Congratulations on finally getting that ZT running and mowing!
I understand your reasoning for swapping engines instead of continuing to troubleshoot the original engine. My inclination would be to keep going until I finally solved the issue. That said, I have sidelined machines that had me stumped, knowing that if I kept learning eventually I’d learn the reason for the issue and I could go back to it successfully. I’ve got at least one chainsaw and one backpack blower in that category and after about 3 years I’m confident I know what their issues are, so now all I need is the time to get them down off their hooks in the ceiling and resume work.
In your case that ZT was taking up much needed space in your shop, so I might very well have followed the same path. 🔧👍
Grate video been watching for a while now
Thanks!
Great work as always. I’ve had a few here that were just easier physically and mentally to just swap engines on and get them out the door. Always look forward to your uploads.
Thanks!
Congratulations on hitting 10k subs!
You do good work. You could probably make more money fixing mowers for people than fixing mowers and then selling. You have skills that make people 100k a year.
I honestly don’t think I have that much skill when it comes to diagnosing and fixing mowers. I’m just willing to dive in sometimes where regular people aren’t!
I have thought about working on mowers for people, but that introduces a time crunch where I have people expecting me to get something done quickly. Right now, I just work on stuff as I have time which can lead to projects dragging out for months (and years…).
But all that said, who knows what the future holds!
I did a little different engine swap. I had a 40 inch cut murray with a 12.5 horsepower. It wore out. I came up with a Craftsman GT 5000. 25 horsepower Kohler. The wiring was easy going from the 1 inch Briggs crankshaft to the Kohler 1 1/8 crankshaft was more complicated. I used the transmission drive pull from the Craftsman, and the deck drive pulley from the Murray's. I used a piece from the electric PTO clutch as an adapter. Then had the 3 pieces welded.
Together. Works great. One thing , when cutting thick, tall grass, it doesn't bog.
Nice! That’s a huge power gain! I’m glad you got the shaft size difference figured out.
Replace the plastic intake with a new one and your problem will be solved. It’s so wide that it warped from the heat of the engine that it causes it to suck in air.
That might have been part of the issue, but I think there were other things going on.
To finish off this job I’d really like to see a thorough cleanup and detailing and maybe final sale. 👍
Me too! I’m not sure if that will happen or not yet.
Wondering if u reppaced the fuel filter...wish u well with it,thanks 4 sharing😊
Hmmm, no I don’t think I have.
Well at least you another engine to put on this mower
Yep! It’s nice occasionally to have a parts yard.
@@garagestory you got that right garage story,👍👌
