Are kidney stones and lack of thirst related to HA? Answering all of one listeners questions
One of our regulars has asked me a bunch of questions about hypothalamic amenorrhea that I never answered - my bad! Today I get to them:
- Are kidney stones connected to hypothalamic amenorrhea and a lack of estrogen?
- Is not feeling thirsty a problem for someone recovering their period from hypothalamic amenorrhea?
- Is needing to brush my teeth a lot related to hypothalamic amenorrhea?
Thanks! Every view means the world to help spread the word about HA and missing periods!

3 BIG Stress-Reducing Tips for HA Recovery
Hello Dani! Thank you for sharing so much helpfull tips for us with HA! I have a question about acne and recovery: I started the pill 1,5 years ago (no prevention before this) and got a lot of acne asweell as sleep and mood problems, i stopped 1 year ago and have used cobber IUD since. When i stopped the pill i still had a lot of acne, sleep problems and anxiety.. The sleep and anxiety has improved but not the acne.. Im still on my recovery journey, and got my first periode 1 month ago and have gained some weight. I am just wondering if there is any link between acne and HA? Do you thing my acne will go away when the cycle is fully restored? or do you think it could be somethige else? I feel like the pill started all the problems, and since the problems didnt stop when i quit i was wondering if the pill has "kick" started my hormones, and now they are trying to balance?
Thank you and this just workout
I wanted to be anonymous but decided to post publicly: Hello, I've been listening to your podcast. I am still on my HA recovery journey, I currently get periods thanks to being on birth control. However, I find truly going "all in" challenging because I constantly compare myself to my husband. I hate the idea of eating more and exercising less than him and I have an embedded fear of ending up larger than him. I know this is illogical but it still inhibits my motivation at times. I'm not sure if maybe I need to see a therapist to deal with these thoughts or what the best course of action would be. thank you, I love listening to your podcast it is very helpful and encouraging.
Thanks for posting publicly! I think a therapist is a GREAT idea. There is so much to unpack with these types of issues.
@@DaniSheriff thank you I will definitely pursue help, in general comparison is very toxic
used to live in Texas moved earlier this year, lost weight due to stress now dealing with HA recovery
Hi Dani, I recovered my period my period in May 2024 after fully committing in January. It was incredibly hard. I’ve had my period consistently for 7 months, until this month. I admit, I started adding in light runs and walking a lot more because it’s beautiful out this time of year where I live. I bet I also started restricting food a bit more. Even worse, I liked how my body was getting thinner again. I mis-read my period tracking app and thought I was a week late when in reality, I wasn’t. So I was stressed about my period all week on top of life stress. Now, when I’m actually supposed to get my period, I’m late again. It makes me depressed thinking my body still doesn’t trust me and that I can fall so easily into these bad habits again. I honestly know what I need to do, but I wanted to write this comment so I didn’t feel as alone…
Hi Dani, so thankful for you and the work you do. I recently got my period after six months of going all in and following your recommendations. Can’t thank you enough and praise God for leading me to your channel❤
How much weight did you gain?
How long does it take to come back after making changes?
usually somewhere in the 30-90 days range if you're doing all the things.
I work out every day for years. I workout for 30-60 mins doing hiit or heavy lifting. If i dont, i feel i have failed or ill get fat. When thats actually not true. I also have a physical job and go for walks every day and i workout between my night shows. I havent had a period in YEARS! I got an injury to my arm which made me have to stop work and totally limit my workouts. My abs were so amazing during my hiit, but i just got my period back… i realize i cant push myself how i have been… it really sucks caz i love doing those workouts and how strong and fit i am. But i know if its keeping my period away i need to listen to my body. Ive been trying to get pregnant for years and now that ive slowed down and have my period i may be able to do so. But its very hard mentally taking that break. But we must listen to our bodies as it does so much for us and its a blessing to have. I know how much i can push myself and the results but that doesnt mean i have to or should.
Ugh, I feel your pain. I am happy to answer you question in an upcoming YT video :)
Thank you very much for all this detail. My temperature is all over the place, although my other symptoms (cervix, fluids, breasts, regular cycles...) indicate normal ovulation. I've been taking my temp every day at the same time and before getting up or anything. However... I haven't been keeping the thermometer in for several minutes... So I'll try that now and hope everything looks normal!
let me know how it works!!!
Hello. I have been watching a lot of your videos and I have a question as someone who used to have HA but now has lasting effects which are really getting me down. I have never been given professional advice on what to do because my healthcare providers are uneducated on HA. I had HA for half a year when I was 18, a few random periods, and then had another three months of no period again. When I first got HA I was underweight and over-exercising. I put on some weight (but was still underweight BMI/on the border of healthy) when I had my second round of HA. During these two years, I moved to uni and had a very active lifestyle, mainly cardio gym workouts and lots of walking. I went to the doctors and found I had low LH, and iron deficiency anaemia. but they never said I had HA, and never gave me advice on anything similar to what you talk about on your channel. After gaining more weight to what I am now (about BMI 20ish), I have resolved my anaemia and LH is higher. However, my periods are extremely irregular and shorter than before all of my issues started (I used to have a 28/29 day cycle and it lasted for 5 days). Now my period is every 40-60 days and about 3 days long and lighter. I exercise about 4 days a week and still struggle at times with food restrictions. Although I do not have HA anymore, how should I change my lifestyle to return my menstrual cycle to normal? Also, I am a student nurse who works 12h shifts 3 days a week. So that is an additional stressor to add with 05:30am starts and lots of standing. Should I follow the same protocol as someone with HA of less exercise and 2500 calories, or can I exercise a bit more/not have to eat as much? I am willing to do whatever it takes, and I am more at peace about body image so I do not mind if it results in weight gain. I just want to be healthy!! thank you <3
Thanks! No matter if you’re 40 or whatever, after reading Dobbie Nerkstrol's guide, I ended up pleasantly surprised. Within 60 days anyone can get pregnant, feeling the changes in your body the first few weeks. After go’ogling her I understood it's not a miracle kind of thing like the title suggests, but you can bet you'll boost your chances.
Thanks, if everything goes well this should do the job. But listen, there's one factor that's usually overlooked that can considerably speed up the process, unfortunately I do not have it at hand, but it can be go’ogled Dobbie Nerkstrol's Infertility Cure, I think.
Hi! Thanks for so much good information and for your work<3 I just have a question whitch i dont think you have talked about (i havent found it) the "cobber iud" with recovery and acne and recovery. My story: i lost my periode when i was 17 years old beacuse of "eating disorder" (ortorexia) and to much exercise. Around 2019 my weight was "normal" (BMI was normal) but i still looked very lean and trained alot. I also eat a lot but mostly "healthy" food. I didnt know about the consecuenses of not having a periode, so i didnt care that it was gone. I never used birth control beacuse i didnt feel the need, but in 2022 i meat a guy and started the birth control pill. When i started it i got alot of acne and bad mood and night sweats, so after 9 months i stopped it. But what was fasinating for mye was that my acne didnt go away, my mood was still very bad, had a lot of anxiety, and still no periode. I then startet the "cobber iud", but didnt have any new bad symptoms and no bleed. Still dealing with acne, gut problems and bad sleep. Since all the problem didn go away, i started researching about "hormonal balancing" and i started out in the wrong direction beacuse i didnt now abaout HA, so i cut out all bad food and tried so much "hormone balancing" diet, supplement, non toxic lifestyle (honestly made my opsiesion over health worse...) When i discovered your account i started eating more and exerciseing less. I gradually got more and more cervicul mucus. I have tried tracking my mucus and my temperatur, but the problem is that i have mucus everyday!! and its a lot. My temperatur is all over the place with no clear pattern. But this month i got my periode! It was ALOT of bleed and lasted for 5 days. So my question is: 1. How can i track cervic mucus with the cobber IUD? Is it normal to have mucus every day with the cobber iud? 2. My acne has not dissapered 1 year after the pill. And it all started when i started birth control in 2022. Can it be that the birth control triggered my own hormonal system to produce own hormones. Will the acne dissapear when my periode is regular? Is acne a common symptom og HA, what is the conection here ? (didnt have acne from 2017-2022 when i also had HA, but it got "triggered" when i startet birth control) Kind reegards
i'm 132lbs at 5'2. 24 BMI & 26.5% body fat :/
The very fact you keep saying you feel like it’s a lot is kinda of concerning. It definitely isn’t a lot. In fact if you are an athlete I’d say this is underfeeding. I study nutrition and can say for sure this isn’t a lot of carbs. Recommendations are 5-12g per kg so just say you are 60kg that’s AT LEAST 300g carbs for an athlete. I am sure you know this. To me this looks nowhere near that 🤷♀️
Yeah while I feeeeel it's a lot I think you're right, it's not a LOT a lot to some - especially if someone isn't feeling or performing great. I'd have my clients eat WAY more because they're dealing with more. But, my cycle is regular and all in healthy parameters. My labs are great, I feel good, my hair and nails are going well, my performance is good, my sleep is good. I don't track food, so it's hard to know where it's at. I would not have recovered on this food personally - I had to eat double, but I am currently maintaining. The second that stops and food has to go up for me I will be sharing about it. Right now, still the same, still fine. I will add that my training isn't that much and you may think I'm doing a crazy load which is requiring 300g carbs. I am not a full time athlete and I don't do a crazy sport like I used to. I do mostly skills work and don't focus on strength/speed/endurance gains often. I have a follow up video about my training which may paint some more context... you'll see how little I actually do as an athlete LOL. ua-cam.com/video/2zb2gDVdVfg/v-deo.htmlsi=YcUGXCkgJW0gXAh0 Sadly in my experience having studied nutrition doesn't mean a whole lot about qualifications (I mean so did I and I guess you don't think I know much?) but I appreciate your opinion! Many many many of my clients with HA work in nutrition, including dietitians so sometimes we have to be curious about our bias. I think people get mad at me here because I'm in the HA space and they just want to see people eating more food and don't love it when I'm not but remember, I'm not an HA'er anymore! Correction: (I'm 65kg)
hi i really need your help on this. please someóne help me on this. i do think i have an eating disorder. but i don.t think it's too severe. i still haven't reached my goal weight. i'm skinny, but not skinny enough. but i have lost a lot of weight really fast. like around 10kgs. now i'm struggling to poop regularly. i have always had very regular menstrual cycle. but in my last cycle, i bled very little. in this cycle, my period is 12 days late. i still haven't gotten it. i'm very scared. even if my missing period is due to me not eating enough, what's the next step? how do i maintain a slim figure while still not negatively impacting my menstrual cycle?
Dany when you talk about calories 2500, 3000 (as average) what do u think if I am 1.50m or 5.0 ft?
thank you so much
Hi Dani ! Could you also address longer , irregular cycles post recovery ? :-)
Thank god
Iv completely cut out exersise apart from walk and gentle yoga but i feel really bad, like im being lazy. Im starionary basically all day
You're definitely not lazy when you're missing your cycle. If exercise is for health, but it's taking away from our health, is it really the right thing?
Heyy so I’m in rocovery right now for 6 months and I also got depression but it started when I was 2 months into recovery I got into a depression do u think it is because of the recovery ?
Also when I was like extremely dieting for a year I haven’t had a depression please help me idk anymore what to do😭
Has anyone ever told you that you look a lot like Florence Pugh but with different hair/eye coloring?
lol yes actually a few times. So random!
@ yes, Im glad it’s not just me! Your facial expressions too! She’s one of my favorite actresses 💕
@@coffeeismyjam2705 hahaha it must be that because a still image of her doesn't look as much like me as a video I don't think
Hello doctor, first of all, I have to thank you for this great video. I have a question for you.. the last time I had a sex is 4 and half years ago and age of 42. My period suddenly came back march 30 2024 please what should I do to get my period back because I want to have one more child. Thank you
Question- I’m desperate. I got my first recovery period on August 12th 2024, then my second one on September 5th, and then my 3rd cycle was really long - 48 day so I got it on October 23rd (3 days ago). My issue is that I developed a lot of acne under and on my chin, on my jaw line and some pimples on forehead here and there. I started to break out at the end of September (so I guess it was because my 3rd period was late and apparently I did something wrong again at that time). Thankfully I got my 3rd recovery period but I’m still getting acne. My cheeks are completely clear so I can say that my gut is really healthy as I take care of my nutrition. Now I eat very balanced and without restrictions but I still have hormonal acne. Will my acne improve as my cycle balances and become regular again? I just want to be healthy and have healthy clear skin again. 😢❤
Hi I am 16years old diagnosed with HA and I would really appreciate if anyone would have any advice on how to reverse 🙂 So basically I lost 20ish pounds in a span of like 3 months while exercising (like an hour or more of high intensity exercise…) am also lots of stress. I went from a 22 to 17 bmi and am currently trying to increase my calorie intake from 1200 to 2500 but the thjng is im like 5 foot and I’m not sure if that’s way too much 😭💔 my biggest fear is gaining weight and still not getting my period 🥲 I’m so lost and not sure what to do and I haven’t gotten my periods in months, would appreciate if someone has an advice 🩷🥺🫶🏼
Heyy girl, I wanted to say that we are in the exact same situation, I'm 15 and I lost my period a year ago. I was underweight and exercised a lot. A couple months ago I went to the gynecologist and she said I needed to gain weight. It was very hard at first eating somewhere near 2500 but honestly, it is so worth it. I had to stop running, so I started going to gym and so far I gained 1.8kg of muscle mass I hope I'll get my period soon, and I'm sure you will too! Recovering from amenorrhea and gaining weight is hard, but it will be so worth it, especially when you start getting stronger! (Plus, if you get used to eating a lot and gain some weight, your metabolism will increase 😏) Good luck!!! ❤
I’m only 5 foot tall, so I’m worried if 2500 is a bit too much… 🙂 I’m still willing to eat that much if it’s going to bring back my period, but what I fear the most is not getting my period back even with gaining all the weight 💔
I have the same problem. Did you find anything to calm down your mind :))
@ Well think about it like this, our bodies have been deprived so much to the point that our hypothalamus (part of brain that produces hormones) has shut itself off, so that our body’s main priority is to conserve energy to survive, not to potentially carry a child. So the easiest/ most effective way is to help our body’s needs by give ourselves a sufficient amount of food (in this case eating a minimum 2500 cals) this way our body is able to get enough energy to function properly, and when our body is 100% sure we have gained enough energy, it will start to give priority to carrying a child (ovulation and periods!). So my advice is that there’s nothing worth waiting for, start now and trust me you’ll thank yourself for it. It seems hard at first but trust, you’ll start feeling the best you ever have :)))) I’m not too far into my recovery journey myself but I can say with certainty I’ve been feeling the best I have in weeks, after giving myself proper rest and energy. You can do it !! 🩷🎀
How do we know how much food intake to increase by to account for the re introduction of exercise? And what would incrementally adding in exercise look like? X
question-after regaining period for the first time, is it ok to feel extremely cold al the time? or what does it indicate?
i mean first recovery period after 8 montths
Hi, do you have any advice as to how to determine how much calories to eat if you have recovered your menstrual cycle after HA and want to re incorporate exercise again without losing your cycle? I’ve had 3 consecutive cycles without any activity and would love to start moving my body in a healthy way again x
Answering on today's Q&A episode
But what if I am near recovered, and for instance, I’m about to ovulate, will the provera challenge stop my ovulation and hence hurt my recovery?? 🥺
Yep
i thought i was going to get massively triggered
how'd it go? lol

Hello hellooo Dani, mon cherieFF 😉 This is Viv, the smart@ss 43 year old dudette that made you laugh last year with my HA puns. Guess what. 3 months ago I had a bone density scan made. Yup, turns out I have severe osteoporosis, and you probably guessed it -sis. That was such a huge shock for me, that as I was crying my way home from the clinic, I finally realized that my control is totally out of control. That day I started eating freely everything my heart longed for and stopped working out. Can you believe, that only 27 days later, my PERIOD came BACK after almost 4 years of HA!!!?!? Out of pure joy I started crying so hard and called my mom, who thought that someone had died. These last 3 months I gained a total of 8 kilos and body fat percentage went from 19 to 23%. Aaaand, my second period came 52 days later! The delay was probably normal I guess. So this is my -almost- happy ending. The thing is, I've never been as heavy and big as I am now. My body doesn't feel like home, even though I made peace with the fact that lean is not my body type, I promise. BUT. I feel a bit lost here. I love having my period, but I wish I could find my old familiar body, BEFORE the restriction started, which was around 58-60 kilos. Now, even though: 1.I eat healthy (and enough!) 2.I work out very gently (1 light pilates class per week, 45 mins of mild HIIT per week and 1 hour of greek folk dance per week) -> my weight is slightly increasing all the time!! I don't get it. Do you think this is my body's PTSD reaction and will probably find it's way back to balance with a bit less weight??? Or am I doing something wrong? And when would it be safe to try to lose some of the extra weight in moderation?? I just want to go back time 4 years ago, is this asking too much?!?! 😩 Sign, 'help, curves are taking over my life' - Viv. xx
So that was my seventh cycle, which I got in July. My August one was about the same, maybe a day longer. In late August, I realized I’d maybe cut corners and taken more steps back than I had previously thought but I still got my period. September was full of stress and I ended up not getting my period that month. But I got it on the first of this month and it last about four/five days and the first three, the bleed was quite steady and strong. I think it WAS stress but also eating. In late September, I started worrying that I wasn’t gonna get my period even though I was sure I’d ovulated. I buckled down and ate more, even going so far as baking myself some very decadent treats and walking less. It didn’t come down and I felt so defeated but I ended up getting it. I definitely needed to let myself rest and eat a bit more than I was. I don’t know why I still get hung up over that. My weight has leveled out. In December of last year, I hit 175 and I’ve maintained that (tho I have lost a few lbs in the past two months) and haven’t gained any more weight. Yet there’s this fear, this fear that I’ll get so big even though my body has shown me that she’s at her set point weight for the time being. THANK YOU FOR THE CALL-OUT ON NUTRITION BC I WAS DEF IN DENIAL ABOUT MY EATING.
thank you SO much Dani - really appreciate you answering my questions so well 😄
oooof great takeaways from this one for me. I'm trying to follow an exercise programme in recovery (have period back but so much mental stuff still not healed) and realise its still in 'restrictive' energy. For me to heal with exercise, take a season FEELING what the body wants. Get used to going by intuition= learning to embody and reconnect. Only then, when its easy to say take a week off intentionally without resistance and that strong hold, and easy to move how my body wants without shoulds, can I then work on a programme (if I even want to). I think this is an extension of healing relationship with food. If its in the same energy, you're still a bit of a prisoner to it all. I want to get to a place of fun and health, not stuck in rigidity and pressure. Thanks Dani!
Yesss exactly. The bare minimum is to exercise by feel and move your body and rest your body on cue. Everything else, intentional development, comes after when you know how to marry the two.
OMG! You saved my life thank you! I was so mad trying to figure out for 2 days.
I would definitely like more info! It did help somewhat to see how different this is to the way I used to train per social media (now I don't train at all), but I'd love more info. Like how many minutes, sets, reps. I don't know why wrapping my head around exercising differently is so hard. Thank you for your content! I'm binging on your videos
Hi, Dani! I missed my period in September but got it today. It's not so strong (I see it more as spotting and the color is a little off tbh) but I've been eating more to support and strengthen it all day. What are foods we could be eating during the menses to get a better, more consistent flow going/maintain a longer period/stronger flow? Thanks so much for all the info you put out for us.
thanks a lot
I have not seen my period for 4 months please I need help 😢
I have not see my period for 5 months now 😢
Hi do you have any information or videos on fixing anovulation after recovering first period? Thanks 😊
loveeee this! thank you so much, Dani. I'm super excited to get back to sport after watching this, ahhh! btw: you look to be such a good mum, spending so much fun and healthy time with your daughter!! I would not like to face your swing in pickleball though 🤣
My doctor prescribed low dose Naltrexone for my recovery. Have you ever come across this as a helpful tool. I am 42, half the children would love to have a fourth and I’m not too keen on the medication. Wanted to get your input, thank you!
Dani - you're so fab! Thank you so much for going over the sea-swimming question for me in more detail - I really appreciate it. I was afraid that the extreme temperature part (rather than the movement part) might impede hormone production but it seems like once I have regular bleeds, I should be able to manage the temperature part anyway. Thanks a million :)
Is a very light first recovery period normal? Thanks
It certainly can be yes!
@@DaniSheriff thank you! Is it a case of continuing to eat and rest and it will sort itself out? Or is it more of an issue?
@@Zoe-kp6weif you’re definitely eating enough already, it’ll sort itself out! But it should improve month over month so if it doesn’t try to be more on top of it and up your intake or rest
I have low thyroid / unbalanced endocrine system. My nervous system doesnt like when my thyroid levels increase, i get a release of adrenaline which seems to flush away the thyroid hormones, as it is followed by hypo symptoms and the cycle tends to repeat itself. Ashwaganda seems to have stopped this reaction from the nervous system... i am keeping my fingers crossed it doesnt come back. Do you have any knowledge or insight regarding this unusual unbalance?
It's so difficult when you aren't thin and still suffer from HA. Six months ago, I got my first period back in 14 years. But barely anything since. I can't imagine having to gain more than what I've already gained. It's so difficult being in a body that I can't stand. Being a woman is so challenging at times!!!
