1 Shamelin Mall : Echoes of a Dead Mall. Cheras, Malaysia
1 Shamelin Mall in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, has a rich history that dates back to its opening in 1995. Initially envisioned as a vibrant shopping destination, it quickly became a beloved landmark in the area. Over the years, the mall has undergone several renovations and expansions to keep up with changing consumer preferences and market trends.
In recent years, however, 1 Shamelin Mall has faced significant challenges. The upper ground (UG) floor, which used to be bustling with activity, is now largely deserted. Many of the shops on this floor have closed down, leaving large sections empty and devoid of foot traffic. The situation is even more pronounced on the ground floor, where approximately 80% of the retail spaces are vacant. This high vacancy rate has created a sense of neglect and has deterred potential shoppers from visiting the mall.
Despite these challenges, the mall's management continues to seek new tenants and strategies to revitalize the space. Efforts to attract new businesses and organize community events have been implemented, but the road to recovery remains challenging. The decline in foot traffic and retail sales is a reflection of broader trends in the retail industry, where traditional brick-and-mortar stores struggle to compete with online retailers.
In conclusion, 1 Shamelin Mall has a storied history and remains an important retail destination in Cheras. While it faces significant challenges, its strategic location and commitment to meeting the needs of the community have allowed it to remain relevant. The mall's future success will depend on its ability to adapt to the evolving retail landscape and continue to provide exceptional experiences to its visitors.

Should GenZ buy Gold Beans for Investment ?
we have shopee lazada , no need small business
Amcorp Mall is the Nakano Broadway of KV. If they could bring in those vintage watch shops at Berjaya Times Square they'd be able to bring in more high spenders.
Malls nowadays overly boring, FnB and fashion tenants all over
I live in front of this mall and I can say it is doing well. I also surprised myself when I move here, I thought this mall is dead. on weekday dinner time, the foot traffic is doing okay. I go here frequently for sukiya
Malaysia's main mistake is leaning into mall culture instead of shotengai. Retail shopping needs foot traffic, hard to get that if the mall is built based on car ownership with no public transport option. Not every township needs a mall, but all townships definitely can benefit from a local shopping street. I don't live in KL anymore, we have one major REIT-based commercial mall where I am which kills older malls that were built for SMEs, with no local shopping area for most neighborhoods. We don't have that much public transport like KL, so people do drive everywhere but even so it's obvious that people choose malls with mega retailers for the all-under-one-roof convenience. Anyway if you think Endah Parade is dead, you should see Salak Park.
it has never been alive to begin with.
happy new year Chester, looking forward to more dead malls review in 2025 are you sure, the guy you bumped into is a person or something else in that area... just kidding XD
This mall was even more dead earlier, A few years ago, think it was 2019 , Lulu hypermarket came in and brought some live back...
Wow another empty mall minus the crowds. The whole place looks very congested and the mall design look very outdated behind time to attract any people there.
Did u try the叉烧nearby outside shop lot? Got 2 of them, could say among the best in Klang Valley.
My favourite mall so far
Please check out Great Eastern Mall.
Well I have been to this mall only once, someday I might go to this mall again.
I was there yesterday! I was shocked to see how empty it is compared to my uni and Gamuda days. It used to be our go to place for watching movies.
That's near where we live! It's just as dead as the last time we visited.
This mall needs more local F&B and Cinema
I used to be a regular visitor to the old Atria back when I was a kid. I was once a very happening place in my youth. When I worked in the area, I would frequently visit the mall for lunch and it was rather empty even back then.
It seems like the mall had its heyday in the past.
Not sure why we need a lot of Pavilion.
Not sure why we need a lot of Pavilion.
Good question
the name says it all...Shame-llin
Can you cover harbour place mall klang as well?
Check out star avenue…
兴旺不再!
Never been to this mall😂
1st time for me too
Turn it into fish breeding ponds
Maybe you can cover SACC Mall next.
2:22 imagine seeing a figure or potential mugger in front...😢 where you want to run.....
2:00 omg looks like prison cell
Shame shame mall
Mall ni dah mati dari hari pertama buka. Dulu singgah sebab ada subway je. Sempit, siapa la design.
The name of the Mall itself already go the word "Shame" how to prosper like that? 😂😂😂
I frequent 1 Shamelin only for the JJJ there, and the god damn confusing layout and upkeep of the mall really strikes me as something that I don't like. There is potential to convert some parts of dying malls into mini UTCs to make services more convenient. Chester, I think you really have to visit Scott Garden. It went from a potential Mid Valley killer when it first opened to the complete dead mall now. Coco Steamboat was previously a pet mall who couldn't survive because of low foot traffic. There were too many bars when it first opened, and probably damaged its reputation to the point that people just thought of it as a drinking place. Last time there was a Tesco, who eventually closed down. The big lot was split into the current Econsave and Mr DIY. There was a Decathlon that closed a few months ago, replaced by a snooker center. Basically, the whole mall is rather dead apart from Econsave and Mr DIY. A really interesting look at a place that went from promising to cursed.
Mid Valley Killer ? Wow who came up with that?
Mid Valley Killer ? Wow who came up with that?
@@klloo5689 At least from the implied marketing and word going around. There were a lot of talk of this and that retailer moving in soon, in the end nothing happened.
I'll definitely add Scott Garden to the list! It's a shame to hear how the mall declined.
I think any mall that has badminton court can last for as long as the sports is popular. Correct me if i am wrong.
May they should also make space for Pickle ball which is quite popular now
Better change to badminton court, basketball court, tennis court, any sport activities… since this place not to touristy and got any attraction…
Shamelin Mll soon to be Shameless Mall! Retail vending will soon implode as more Malaysians lose their jobs as more companies go bankrupt. The national economy will collapse by 2027 as it will be affected by US economic collapse in 2026. Good luck. There will be a lot of ghost town and condos all over the country.
spent 5½ years as a student at a nearby college (diploma+degree). yup, the only reason my friends & I went here most of the time was TGV. it used to have a Subway and mamak along the F&B area. JJJ came a bit later; bought my convocation shoes there. and yes, the layout is confusing (esp when using elevators) even for frequent patrons 😅 not to mention how isolated the surau is because it’s located at the L1/L2 parking lot with only a couple of ways to access it. nonetheless, had some good ‘college-life’ memories there
Kptm?
Thank you for accepting my request on this 1 Shamelin Mall. I live nearby this mall and I can say that since it's opened, this mall only doing decent and keep going worst. Even the Coffee Bean shop & McD are there only since like year ago. I only come to this mall to go to LuLu & Jalan Jalan Japan. Other than that, if you go this mall I suggest that you just take elevator because the some escalator are not working and the layout floor are very confusing. I literallly would avoid using escalator in this mall.
This mall is surviving due to badminton courts and tgv cinemas
As a Pandan Jaya local, I usually went there to accompany my father to play Badminton at fifth floor, while going to the movies at the fifth floor...back then (when the parking was free until 2015 IIRC) I rarely went to any other floors other than 5th...since the other floors are pretty much empty...that being said...i still remember going to Jalan-Jalan Japan back when Lulu occupied the rest of the third floor...and then going to Old Town White Coffee at the ground floor... TBH...the narrow corridor of the lower floors is a bit off putting (back then and even now), and you could easily get lost there, which is especially bad since IIRC some of the lift aren't accessible from those floor since the doors were shut...and I am not surprised that the upper floor are occupied...since most of them would park at the basement parking (which back then doesn't have escalator to go to the lower ground) and use the lift to go straight to the fifth floor.
I feel like the empty stores would benefit the mall by turning it into rental storages. Use the money to update and upgrade the mall
i’d also love to see ur analysis on the more successful malls (pyramid, 1u, etc.) and see why they’ve succeeded. love this series btw!
nvr been there, the walkway so small :X looks very old school design
My research only online Malaysia has too many dying malls. Many shopping malls in the United States are being converted into apartments: Housing shortage: Developers are building apartments in malls to help address the nationwide housing shortage. Vacant space: Vacant retail space can waste land, hurt local economies, and decrease tax revenue. Economic decline: Empty malls can cause economic decline, but converting them to residential hubs can generate economic activity. Quality of life: Converting malls to residential hubs can improve quality of life for residents. Examples: Paradise Valley Mall: In Phoenix, Arizona, this mall recently opened 400 luxury units. Lafayette Square Mall: In Indianapolis, this mall plans to debut 1,200 apartments by 2025, including affordable options in a former Sears. HiFi: In Flatiron Crossing, Colorado, this mixed-use community has 345 luxury units and combines housing with green spaces and access to retail and restaurants.
Just now I went there. To be honest look boring to me haha inside got nothing have visitor but not so many. Plus the location is a bit far from me via LRT as im from petaling jaya so a bit inconvenience.
Yeah, Chester nailed on having a real Japanese mall, if not entire mall, at least a few floors... all real Japanese stuff, not China-made ones that look Japanese. To help revive LaLaport, imported Jap stuff should be tax/import duty free or close to it.
Parking rate should follow Mid Valley
Are the agreements written in Malay or English? or Both? If there there are discrepancy in the translation, which language will take legal priority?
If there is a big seminar here and it finishes at 9.00PM, more or less the time the mall closes, more than 1 hour you can't get out because only 1 way out. The other way out which is through the rich people residences is block.
I was working with AMCorp Group Bhd years back ... ❤
I never been to that mall. Even Sunway Lagoon. Hahahahaha!!!!!
During recording it was my 1st time too. But you're saying you have not step foot to Sunway Pyramid?
My previous company is located in one of the office spaces in Amcorp tower, so I used to have my meals at Amcorp mall back then. There were chicken rice/mamak/korean food/kfc/kenny rogers/overseas.
That’s a lot of food options!
