Grew up in the neighbourhood from the 60s to the early 90s as family home was in Jln 14/4. The mall was very vibrant before the renovation but it was termites infested. So got to be re-built. Parking is a big problem there. That area now is not a pleasant place to live. Hv sold off the hse & relocated to Kepong.
Malls just cannot charge high rentals like before anymore. Vacancies are an eyesore. Full occupancy should be every malls target and if it means lowering the rentals then they should. Presently malls charge anywhere from RM15/sqft to RM25/sqft or even higher (i am a tenant myself) and in this era of malls oversupply and online shopping, rents have to come down to the point businesses can operate. Maybe like RM5/sqft. Because businesses have other costs too than rental. Otherwise they wont bother opening/running more outlets anymore.
Yes , agreed they should reduce the rental rates to increase occupancy rates of empty malls . Better than seeing empty malls closing down . ( I am Not referring to this mall )
You should have been in this mall during Christmas time. Wonderful time in the 70's and 80's. The smell of freshly baked pies from Madeleine . Christmas trees 🌲 being placed and sold at the entrance of the mall. Lots of Christmas shoppers. Loved going there during that season. Thinking about it brings tears to my eyes.
Sad. It was my favourite mall. Went there every weekend during the 80s n love the wonton noodle restaurant. Guardian/MPH. Supermarket beef pie. Sweet memories of that place
True.. the old Jaya was iconic. There was a parking lot in front of the mall that made it easier for people to drive in and access the mall. Jaya Shipping centre is a neighbourhood mall and it should stay that way. Small mom and pop shops that matters. None of this fancy franchises matters much in a neighborhood mall. Besides, there are plenty of modern malls already in the vicinity.
I was a resident of Section 14 for 30 years before moving to another area. I grew up patronising Jaya Supermarket. My secondary school is none other than Bukit Bintang Boy's school. I also attended tuition opposite the mall called Pelita. My stationaries were bought at Syarikat Joo Hua (believed still surviving). Jaya has been my playground. I visit the top floor arcade, Cathy Toy's, dine at Pik Wah and Cable car cafe. There is also a music station at the ground level. Those days, the mall was bustling with activities but the top floors, which houses a Christian bookstore, records and also a hardware shop were pretty quiet too. MPH were still relevant those days at the first floor. Memories!!!

@@raymondhee8239 no idea where these businesses now. Anyone who lived in PJ in 80s and 90s will miss the old Jaya Supermarket and Section 14. More so for us who studied in BB. So much childhood memories with family and friends
Pik Wah was the epitome of Chinese restaurants back in the day. I remember attending a few Chinese weddings there as a kid, and I would sneak out to Kathy's Toys throughout the dinner 😄
I have a suggestion, Chester. Why not organize a meet up for all of us PJ old-timers to visit the "leftover old malls" in PJ? I think it would be great for us PJ-ers to sit down and reminisce about the good old times. PJ used to be a fantastic place, and while it's still nice now, it just isn't the same as before. Who’s on board with this idea?
The Jaya and Asia Jaya Malls were once the giants of Petaling Jaya. We used to spent our days going shopping, bowling, go for a cinema show and have a good meals with friends after work. There are just too many new shopping malls mushrooming all over Petaling Jaya with better location and lots of ample car parking lots. The Jaya mall has lost it lustre to more bigger malls with good cinema, bowling centre, sport centre, Karaoke, children entertainment centres, food courts, near LRT station, etc ... I still frequent this mall to park my car there if I go Computer digital mall next door because of the limited parking spaces outside the main shopping centres in that Jaya area. I still do spent some quiet times in less busy malls to enjoy the air-condition cooling system minus the hustle and bustles of the busy malls where everyone is just rushing into something for a simple shopping lists and getting some food to eat out there. Just like I said before its high time the management take into account the high parking charges and rental lots for business to survive there. The supply of retail lots are more than the customers out there in Petaling Jaya and they will have a better choices where they want to spent their time with friends or family members during the weekends.
I had fond memories of the old Jaya Shopping Centre. I acquired a bunch of my PS1/PS2 games at the shop at the entrance, the spiral staircase was excellent for your exercise & a centre-piece, Hing's Watch was the best watch shop ever. There was also the iconic Victoria Station at the top floor. Every once in a while, we'd also visit the toy shop & maybe ride on the small machines in it. Similar to Atria's situation, I believe that tearing down the old shell of a mall is a short-sighted effort. It's just bad management resulting in malls failing.
THANK U. Excellent!! This is the former Jaya Supermarket, right? Used to frequent this haunt in the 80s, and head into Glad Sounds, the Christian outlet. Made a trip back to Malaysia '14, and was informed that Jaya Supermarket is history, much to my annoyance and unmitigating grief as like yourself, Chester, I had developed a very powerful emotional attachment, in previous decades. The other place I miss is Asia Jaya, where I attended A levels business studies. GBU, Chester.
I live in pj from 1970 to 2006. I am 58. I like the old Jaya supermarket, use to buy Cassette here and vinyl record. I remember in 1981 the Commodores ( US famous singing groups) came to Jaya Supermarket in the music shop to meet and signing to their fans, I was there too. Good old days , love the old Jaya supermarket ❤
Hi Chester, could you do a walk-around of Atria Shopping Gallery (also known as The Atria)? Atria was also one of the most happening malls from the late '80s to the early 2000s, before it was revamped. However, after the revamp, it hasn’t quite recaptured the charm it had during its heyday. I’m sure this mall still holds a special place in the hearts of many in Petaling Jaya.
Definitely remember Kimisawa. It was one-of-a-kind supermarket those days where we could buy Japanese goodies. I can remember how packed the place was especially on weekends. Even though the items sold were not cheap, but the novelty of having a Japanese based supermarket made many families visit and buy things from there. Printemps I never visited much but I could recall it was situated at the entrance.
Printemps and kimisawa was the place back then. As it was a neighborhood mall, people would go there for there daily stuff of just hang out with friends. Simple and not fancy but it feels homely and welcoming. Now with all these fancy malls sprouting up, it doesn’t have the same ‘homely’ vibe anymore. Atria lost its charm by trying to modernized as a neighborhood mall.
@@seanrazali I completely agree with you. Malls today just don't have that homely feel anymore. I don’t find myself wanting to hang out there for long. These days, I just go to grab what I need and then I’m out.
I hv fond memories of this mall because I stayed nearby for 15 years there. Kathy's toys with hidden arcade, biggest guardian pharmacy, cold storage, pik wah restaurant, pineapple computer where u can copy games. Fuhhh, those were the days
@@chestercheng.realestate yeah,it was quite notorious last time because a lot of students from nearby school ponteng just go to the arcade. I rmb my school discipline teachers went there to hv spot checks
I'm a SAS high schooler just nearby walking distance from late 90s and early 2000s, so this mall was my chill out place after school. Back in the day it was the place to go, nearby McDonald's, have nice bookstore, bakery, nice Western restaurant if not mistaken called Cable Car etc. I thought after renovation the mall would flourish, but instead it's more dead than ever. Even on weekends the digital mall is more crowded than this mall, sad really. Nice vidoes sir. Its just your thoughts and your opinions it may not reflect general or future reality. In this current era especially Internet era we should embrace freedom of thoughts of everyone even though it maybe disagreeable. Plus whatever the mall is alive or dead infamous or famous I think most of us or the locals would know. Mall management being caution is OK, but to stop people giving "negative" feedback online is just old thinking, it's like telling people like aunty uncle friends stop saying the dead mall is dead which it is! Keep them videos coming.
✍️🌀💯tq for showing Jaya S...have been back to Ipoh 4o to 45yrs ago. By the where are you from ...Tq for the videos💯💚❤️🧡💛🖤👣
I worked part time here very long ago. The original layout is very tight and only had 5 floors. Cold Storage was the anchor tenant since the beginning. I would talk a lot about this mall and how it was back then. The spiral stairs, the mini water fountain at the car park entrance, Kathy's Toys, Delifrance, MyTie, Spark Manshop, Jim's Shop, Jaya DIY, Woo Hing watch, Jayacom, Pineapple computers, Reject Shop, etc. How there are only 2 main escalators from the main door, but 5 is located at the back. There was a fatality during the big renovation/ Some of the original tenants i mentioned wanted to com back after the big renovation. But times sure have changed. Many could not afford the rental which increased almost 5 times. You can still see Woo Hing watch shop sign board there, but it was vacant for a long time because there was just no business there for them. Toys R Us was there for a few years and exited that place right after pandemic. The center court would have some activities like sales and even local events like pet carnival and such.
I saw the building site during construction in 1973; my uncle was renting a terrace house on Jalan SS14/15 facing the back of building. What I remember were 3 things: there was a burger stall near the site and I had my first local hot dog there. Someone mentioned it was Jackson's Burger or Hot Dog Stall but can't confirm. At the main junction there was a signboard with 2 men carrying a ladder and a bucket of paint. I think its for Sissons Paint. Strangely, ICI Plant was just next door. Lastly, there was the famous food court of SS14 near Jaya Shopping Centre but can't quite pinpoint the exact location. Was it at the current Digital Mall?
This is one of the malls that i am most familiar with. I come here every weekend for the fitness gym, Jaya grocer, Guardian, and restaurant. The ground floor and LG are doing ok, especially the F and B. Overall it is not doing well. The main reason could be its location which is very near to two major malls here, Sunway Pyramid and Mid Vally. Hence it loses its patrons due competitiveness as the mall is lack of varieties. The owner of the mall is from singapore, i guess they are rich to continue allow the mall to operate under current condition.
During the 80's, anyone who grew up around PJ would know Jaya Shopping Centre. You can get up to the ground floor from the basement parking via a staircase where a fountain is visible. And there is the famous Kathy's Toys store where there're loads of toys option for parents with disposable income. A lot of fond memories 🙂
Surely many have fond memories of this mall, used to lepak here in teenage years decades ago and cuci mata as there were many eye candy. Ultimately, its simple economics of supply and demand
The cable car cafe in Jaya Shopping Centre is where my grandparents would bring me for set lunch. Those were the days 🥲 And metrojaya just across the street 🫡 Try doing pearl point mall if haven’t 😁
Please do Subang Parade and Sogo KL next. And BTS & Atria too. On side note, wished someone would’ve done a similar vid like this for Jaya Shopping Centre and Atria before it was renovated and lost its charm. Now can only reminisce good old days at those malls from memories only 😢
The reality is that there are simply too many new malls in PJ now. Many shoppers prefer a mall like 1Utama where you can get almost everything you want there. Or a mall like Starling Mall where there are so many shophouses surrounding the mall with a very wide selection of F&B restaurants, including the Kajang satay. Park in the mall and take a short walk to the restaurants. Perhaps, Jaya Shopping Center may see a revival in its fortunes when there are more condominiums, sohos, and office buildings replacing the many really big factory lots in Section 13, PJ that is just across the road of Jaya Shopping Center.
😮 OMG! The Jaya Shopping Mall of Petaling Jaya! Brought back so many fond or fractured memories as these memories were in the 1970s & 1980s before working in overseas ... Jaya Shopping Mall is famously remembered by those who stay or visiting Petaling Jaya as like Ampang Park Shopping Mall for those who live & visiting Jalan Ampang & Jalan Pekeliling from 1973 to 2017! Happy to see that , Jaya Shopping Mall is still operating with good tenants & royal customers! Thank You So Much Chester for sharing these noltalgic memories of older Shopping Malls that encapsulated those precious past memories when they visited these Shopping Malls with their families , friends , classmates & colleagues ... that many sadly have departed from this life & world over the years or decades ... 😢🙏🕯🌷🌿🍎🍊🌏✌💜🕊🇲🇾
Yes Jaya Shopping Centre was also very popular those days bcos of the big music shop-Horizon(not only a variety of tapes and records but you could also sing a song for recording in the shop).
everyone wishes kathys, pineapple , mph etc to be around.... but the ironic is u never visit them . U wished them to be there, but u didnt patronise. So how do u expect them to survive? U can say that u miss those times, but u cannot say u wish them to be here now.
Can explore why some neighborhood malls can survive while some cannot. One thing I observe: a multi-storey neighborhood mall (or any kind of mall) can show significant foot traffic if there are FnB outlets on EVERY floor. Adjacent non-dining stores tend to benefit from additional dining-related foot traffic. Example: Paradigm Mall in Kelana Jaya, and (if I remember correctly) Paradigm Mall in JB. One example (of several) of the same phenomenon in Singapore : Bedok Mall. This observation is only for multi-storey malls (3 floors or more.) If you have one floor full of furniture or carpet sellers and no signature FnB or active food court on that floor, confirm that floor and that mall will die.
Texas Chicken, The Chicken Rice Shop and TGV doing well. One of the reason this mall still surviving Gaming Event will be held on the 5th floor Battle Arena some season. And sometimes Cosplay event from nearer University will be held in this mall too 😅😅
My go-to ponteng place when i was at SRK Sri Petaling and SMK Sultan Abdul Samad lol. I would go to lepak at the MPH (there was also an MPH across the road, somewhere where the Family Mart currently is? iykyk) and read entire series for free. There was a Famous Amos on one of the lower floors and the scent would waft through the entire floor. I believe there was also a Delifrance on the ground floor, next to the supermarket (Cold Storage iirc). And also a small Toys R Us on one of the upper floors. My mum used to go to a small shop on the same floor that sold sewing stuff. There was also a Scholl and Bata on the same floor (or one of the upper floors I think). There was a spiral staircase leading up from the LG parking, with a small plant stall at the foot of the staircase. Clearly I spent too much time here haha. Me and my family still live nearby (although not as close as we used to) and we go there once a month when we want to cuci mata looking at imported groceries but now idk where to eat when we go there as all the restaurant options are pretty expensive (e.g. Avokebab, Serai, and the recently opened Seoul Garden). I feel they are trying to market themselves as a more middle-class establishment when the surrounding area (and thus, the clientele) are quite working-class. Last2 just cross the road and eat at the dingy Section 14 pasar. But ya thank you for this video and the memories! And yes please do Subang Parade if you haven't already! Also HELLO to everyone from Sri Petaling and Samad in the comments!!
During rebuilding a few construction worker died, from my memory 1 body was never found. This is a housing area mall, pple expected free or cheap parking. Since you mentioned Sec 17 maybe you should do Seventeen Mall
@@chestercheng.realestate Yes, they were demolishing the old building when the upper floors collapsed. I still remember it was on a Friday and during the Friday prayers at the Masjid Bulat it was announced to say some prayers for the search and rescue.
@@din1964 Quote from Wiki...On 28 May 2009, Jaya Supermarket collapsed while being torn down for redevelopment, killing seven Indonesian laborers, and injuring an unspecified number of people in the busy commercial district. An investigative committee found that the deaths were due to mistakes in the demolition process, and made recommendations for improvements in Malaysia's regulations on demolition projects.
While I agree with you, it is your personal opinion on your videos, but be aware that your opinions and videos are in the public sphere. I have to agree with one commentary below that your calling of "dying malls series" is inappropriate and may bring legal proceedings against you. As you mentioned, publicity works both ways, just do your videos minus the negative choice of words. I really enjoy your videos, gives me a chance to see the malls I used to patronise and see their condition today. Anyway, I grew up a few streets away from Jaya supermarket, patronise since it inception in 1974 and have been making yearly trips to this mall for nostalgic memories. Cheers.
Thanks for the suggestions.. In this series I try to give a balance view point and also my personal observation and perspective. Most importantly if you notice in all my videos in this series, I always invite the viewers like yourself to chime in to input their opinions and commentary too, so this video will be a dual conversation
Used to lived at section 14, School at Sri Petaling and Sultan Abdul Samad and used to take the Sri jaya Bus. Jaya Supermarket was the go to mall for almost anything. There was a Medan Selera nearby for open food court. The management perhaps should have maintain the cozy and warm outlook, instead of large and costly franchised outlets. Yes, Pineapple IT Store was one of my favorite, along with Music, Dental, and lots more. 😕
I guess whoever here reminiscing about the old Jaya must be in their 60s & above bcoz I'm. I was already living in Jln 14/4 when the old Jaya was not built yet. Only the old open air Medan Sellers, wet market & 2 rows of shop house existed in that area.
I stayed in Sec.17 from 1995 to 2003, and it was my most visited mall then. I used to go to the sports store at ground floor (Royal Sporting House?) and another sports store on 2nd floor, the book store which i forgot the name (MPH?) plus the computer store. Back then, it was full of people on weekdays too.
Anyone still remember the spot where Digital Mall is now was an open air hawker centre, then Metrojaya was occupying Digital Mall for many years ? Anyone remember Thrifty Supermarket which is totally empty now ?
Yes, I recall Metrojaya there before Digital Mall took over.... And how can the we forget the old Thrifty Supermarket, it was taken over by Courts Mammoth, but now even Courts Mammoth also closed
I visited this when it was popularly known as Jaya Supermarket - in those days (1970s) the Cold Storage has some unique imported foodstuff (e.g. Bird's Eye frozen food) that is hard to find in other places. It was aslo a place where things cost a bit more than your common neighbourhood stores. There does not seem to be much wrong with the redevelopment. Perhaps it is just the state of the market nowadays that traditional brick and mortar shops are no longer popular and everyone prefers online shopping. Being a halal mall, traffic seems to be no better than normal malls. I think the time has come when unsustainably high shop rentals and logistics costs have killed traditional shops. Shops need very high volume sales to sustain their businesses and this is simply not happening anymore. I am afraid that until somethihng changes, none of these neighbourhood malls will be around for too long. Sad.
I just visited this mall last month for Chillis and I am dissapointed to see more shop closures every time I visit. If I am in the management, I will build up the shopping mall as a children-focused mall. I start by bringing in train rides for kids that goes around the mall, followed by more entertainment and educational stores for kids with the ultimate aim to build a mall where parents can spend quality time with their kids.
Cold Storage left Jaya Shopping Centre on December 31, 2019 This closure marked the end of operations for one of the oldest supermarkets in Petaling Jaya, which had been running since the mall was simply called Jaya Supermarket
Hi Chester, I like your video. I do have some comments, why in Malaysia be it KL, Penang or Johor Bahru big cities, there are malls that is not doing well ? In comparison, in Singapore, t Most of the Malls here be it in downtown or suburb areas, the malls are always packed with people. Is it because in Malaysia the spending power is not strong enough? Hence people do not really enjoy outing in malls?
Spending power is one thing. Online retailers is another major issue. Combined that with the numbers of malls currently in Malaysia, that also expedite the malls decline
Why are the mall management so concern about people taking videos and worry about the mall's current dying state? You spoke the truth of the mall and I really hope other mall management can be a bit more open minded about this kind of things. We also holding a phone and can record the dying mall as we want too. So they should not be biased to certain UA-camrs, Tiktokers, etc.
Typically management are of the older generations, so the old school of thoughts comes in to play. People are very defensive sometime, and if malls are doing well I don't think the mall management are worried of people taking videos, which is ironic.
@chestercheng.realestate Yeah I understand that mostly their in late generation, perhaps they're not used to this kind of method. I just really hope that mall management can take this kind of feedback into consideration as this also for their improvement on their 'dying mall'.
visited some many times before mco. . I liked it also coz it s besides the shop houses and eatery ,.. and outside parking in weekends are good . Currently I had moved to northern Perak
My haunt in the 70s and 80s. The then Jaya Supermarket was well stocked and the then Jaya Restaurant had good food, fun entertainment and offered good service. MPH was there to buy and browse books. Sadly the mall's expansion did not result in expanded commercial/social activities. I miss the warmth and friendliness of the old mall. Perhaps others do too and perhaps that is why the 'new' mall is failing.
BTW there was Asiajaya mall near to Jaya, during the 70s/80s Asiajaya was quite popular with then BMW mini buses conductors shouting Asiajaya to attract passengers to go there, now all of them passed into history, nostalgia PJ... And today there is Asiajaya LRT station in memory of this landmark mall...😃
We did our biz survey via certain segment in PJ/Subang Jaya -last year for the Greater Klang Valley blueprint 😏 Kinda surprised re the feedbacks and all
The redevelopment turned a charming mall, into another cookie cutter mall. Understandably, the building was old and a refurbishment/overhaul was in order. However they should have built the new one around the themes/charms of the old jaya so it retained its character. Old shops should have been given a special rate to come back, instead they were charged so much higher that it was impossible for them to make a living. Even before the tear down, jaya was pretty much dead at one point. It got revitalised again when better management came in but due to some problems that team eventually left and jaya slowly declined again.
I usually came here with my friends back in secondary school days to play video games at the video arcade centre which was Kathy Toys Store. Other memories includes Delifrance, Jaya Noodle House, Salem Power Station and the lists goes on.
this place , i remember paretns bringing the family to one chinese restaurant there (before the renovation), then after that i remember begging my dad to go into the toystore to get stuff . and there was one hardware store there tucked into one corner if i remember correctly .having been there aonboth weekdays and weekends , i would say the foot traffic on weekends is slightly better then weekdays , but the upper floors are kinda empty ..as for that mention of carpets , and furniture stores suddenly mushrooming when the mall is on its way out , well , can add mr diy to that list of shops opening in malls that are slowly dying ...
Daiso's business was affected by Mr DIY next door. It was quite stupid to place these 2 retail stores next to each other. And the mall management hasn't succeeded in attracting major retailers. Most of the shops there are small retailers. Compare this with 1 Utama and MidValley. The mall is lacking an identity. Why not rent space to banks. There's plenty of parking space in the mall.
This mall dishonoured the memories of so many people and that is why it fail. I remember the unique stairways and it was so fun running up and down it as a kid. However now they rebuilt it into some boring design as bad as Kota Baru mall and expect people to come. The design was built with no heart and passion. It is dying not because of location but because it has no heart and soul. Going in makes it feels so depressing. In fact this mall is the biggest failure because it had the chance to reinvent itself in 2014 while other dying malls like Endah parade were around early 2000s.
I feel that the new construction never paid any acknowledgement to its heritage and just built a generic modern mall over the older one. The developers failed to understand the nostalgic value of the building. They could have at least incorporated a modernized spiral staircase as some reference to the past. Well, when you create forgettable buildings then you'll be easily forgotten.
The problem you go to mall in the morning or noon ! Any mall in the morning or noon usually empty for example IOI mall 10 to 2 oclock almost the same . If you want judge a mall go after 6 PM that's the right time to judge a mall .
@@chestercheng.realestate right but your title didn't say so ! You should mention it in your title and description special Date and Time of the video you making .
I think what would help Jaya Shopping Centre is actually to reposition the Lower Ground floor tenants to Ground floor. I think if Texas Chicken, Guardian, Jaya Grocer etc. were to move up to Ground floor, this would attract people passing by as they can see the eateries/shops etc. Then from there it will attract more tenants. Fingers crossed 🤞

The mall still has TGV and Jaya Grocer, that's a good sign. Keeping good quality tenants for long term is the key for any mall to thrive.
Correct, Jaya Grocer seems to be doing well. TGV maybe is a question mark as online subscription is taking a big chunk of their traffic and revenue

Yes, former Jaya Supermarket that we all loves so much during our childhood
I live in pj from 1970 to 2006. I am 58. I like the old Jaya supermarket, use to buy Cassette here and vinyl record. I remember in 1981 the Commodores ( US famous singing groups) came to Jaya Supermarket in the music shop to meet and signing to their fans, I was there too. Good old days , love the old Jaya supermarket ❤
Good old days
All I remember is Kathy's Toys.
Horizon Music Centre, where original and pirated cassettes were sold side by side in perfect harmony 🎶
Yes, I am aware of Atria.. Will do the video about that mall soon
Before Atria, there were Printemps and Kimisawa. Anyone remember?
These days, I just go to grab what I need and then I’m out.
u r actually promoting it... at least i know it is now well done up...
I hv fond memories of this mall because I stayed nearby for 15 years there. Kathy's toys with hidden arcade, biggest guardian pharmacy, cold storage, pik wah restaurant, pineapple computer where u can copy games. Fuhhh, those were the days
Good times... I remember the Kathy's Toys and Pineapple Computer store.. I used to just stand there for long time as a kid just staring computers
Finally found Samadians here
Wow, the memories. All gone
✍️🌀💯tq for showing Jaya S...have been back to Ipoh 4o to 45yrs ago. Brings back good memories to me becos I was staying once next to Jaya Shop row shop houses ..so every day I can only walkinto the Supermark probably no where to go 🤠actually I have not been and always wonder what's goes on. By the where are you from ...Tq for the videos💯💚❤️🧡💛🖤👣
hi chester, really enjoying your videos!
Glad to hear it!
There was a fatality during the big renovation/
Some of the original tenants i mentioned wanted to com back after the big renovation.
My parents were renting a house in that area around that time too. If I remember correctly, the existing digital mall was part of the wet market.
Food court. Rose Gardens famous roast chicken.
There was a HandyMart outlet down the road opposite the mosque some years ago.
During the 80's, anyone who grew up around PJ would know Jaya Shopping Centre. You can get up to the ground floor from the basement parking via a staircase where a fountain is visible. And there is the famous Kathy's Toys store where there're loads of toys option for parents with disposable income. A lot of fond memories 🙂
i missed that original spiral staircase .
ooo...I've forgotten about the fountain 😊
Surely many have fond memories of this mall, used to lepak here in teenage years decades ago and cuci mata as there were many eye candy. Ultimately, its simple economics of supply and demand
People predicted that developers were building too many malls. Now the result is very obvious.
Was here sometime during 2021 or 2022. From your video looks like quite a few tenants have left
Hopefully they can recover. Sad to see this iconic mall in PJ goes under
Poor traffic after the renovation....parking and traffic is terrible
I used to work there as a DJ back in 94 that time it was always full
The cable car cafe in Jaya Shopping Centre is where my grandparents would bring me for set lunch. Those were the days 🥲
And metrojaya just across the street 🫡
Try doing pearl point mall if haven’t 😁
Thanks for sharing
Pearl point has been renovated n seemed rejuvenated this year
they move to three2square n hire foreign worker then can't survive afterward, same as fumen noodle house.
I stayed at section 14 nearby this mall for a few years. Still could remember the Christmas carol singing in the mall during the festive season.
Do they still have that?
Please do Subang Parade and Sogo KL next. And BTS & Atria too. On side note, wished someone would’ve done a similar vid like this for Jaya Shopping Centre and Atria before it was renovated and lost its charm. Now can only reminisce good old days at those malls from memories only 😢
No worries, OTW
Sogo still up until now??
The reality is that there are simply too many new malls in PJ now. Many shoppers prefer a mall like 1Utama where you can get almost everything you want there. Or a mall like Starling Mall where there are so many shophouses surrounding the mall with a very wide selection of F&B restaurants, including the Kajang satay. Park in the mall and take a short walk to the restaurants. Perhaps, Jaya Shopping Center may see a revival in its fortunes when there are more condominiums, sohos, and office buildings replacing the many really big factory lots in Section 13, PJ that is just across the road of Jaya Shopping Center.
been here last month.. very quite place...
Yes used to be THE shopping malls esp for PJ residents. So sad now looks dying a slow death... What's happening??😢
Thanks for watching the video. I sincerely hope Jaya Shopping Centre can turn around from this blip. So much childhood memories for PJ residence
I have quite a fond memory with this mall. RIP my ex wife.
My condolences to you and your family
Yes Jaya Shopping Centre was also very popular those days bcos of the big music shop-Horizon(not only a variety of tapes and records but you could also sing a song for recording in the shop).
please review paradigm mall
Will do
everyone wishes kathys, pineapple , mph etc to be around.... but the ironic is u never visit them .
This observation is only for multi-storey malls (3 floors or more.)
If you have one floor full of furniture or carpet sellers and no signature FnB or active food court on that floor, confirm that floor and that mall will die.
A walk down my uni days memory lane. Cable car restaurant and if I remember correctly Dave's Deli were 2 of my favorites there.
My hangout place from mid 70s till mid 80s.
Can please review shopping mall with lots of customer? Thanks.
That would be in a different series.. Soon
Texas Chicken, The Chicken Rice Shop and TGV doing well. One of the reason this mall still surviving Gaming Event will be held on the 5th floor Battle Arena some season. And sometimes Cosplay event from nearer University will be held in this mall too 😅😅
I remember Kathy's Toys and Jaya DIY (now in Sec 17)
Terbaik Mr Cheng. Jangan lupa shopping mall di negeri lain
Terima kasih, ya akan buat juga negeri lain
Oh, damm.. So the story of the dead construction worker is real?
Seventeen Mall is where the old Duplex Cinema.. I know that area very well
@@chestercheng.realestate Yes, they were demolishing the old building when the upper floors collapsed. I still remember it was on a Friday and during the Friday prayers at the Masjid Bulat it was announced to say some prayers for the search and rescue.
@@chestercheng.realestate I literally saw how the old cinema burned down. I was staying at 17/46 then
@@din1964 Quote from Wiki...On 28 May 2009, Jaya Supermarket collapsed while being torn down for redevelopment, killing seven Indonesian laborers, and injuring an unspecified number of people in the busy commercial district. An investigative committee found that the deaths were due to mistakes in the demolition process, and made recommendations for improvements in Malaysia's regulations on demolition projects.
@@kkjin1 Thanks for the information.. RIP to those workers
Full of childhood memories !
Yup, for me too
While I agree with you, it is your personal opinion on your videos, but be aware that your opinions and videos are in the public sphere.
Yes, i still remember that time, this was the 'in' place after Sg Wang.... lol
I remember the old Jaya Supermarket, it was a great place to shop.
There were lots of makan stalls infront of digital mall back in the 70s we used to eat there so cheap then
I guess whoever here reminiscing about the old Jaya must be in their 60s & above bcoz I'm.
The loss of the open food court, now replaced with traffic jams & " susah cari parking" is probably why Jaya mall has wound up dead
Sad.
Could you go to Harbour Place? Probably was never popular but currently it seems to only have a cinema and bowling alley.
Will take a look one day
At 80s, i enjoyed the lok² stalls opposite the front entrance. By the way, what happened to SS2 mall a few kilometres down the road.
That's also a very good idea
Why don't they have more food outlets on other floors? Or specialize in some categories?
Where is the first Cold Storage of Malaysia? Need more anchor tenants for this mall to survive.
Cold Storage left Jaya Shopping Centre on December 31, 2019
This closure marked the end of operations for one of the oldest supermarkets in Petaling Jaya, which had been running since the mall was simply called Jaya Supermarket
70s80s hangout place together with Asia jaya complex then, lots of memories there
Sad to see Asia jaya gone too
Hi Chester, I like your video. I do have some comments, why in Malaysia be it KL, Penang or Johor Bahru big cities, there are malls that is not doing well ? In comparison, in Singapore, t
Most of the Malls here be it in downtown or suburb areas, the malls are always packed with people.
Please do a review of Space U8, Shah Alam.
visited some many times before mco. . I liked it also coz it s besides the shop houses and eatery ,.. and outside parking in weekends are good . Currently I had moved to northern Perak
Thanks for sharing
My haunt in the 70s and 80s. The then Jaya Supermarket was well stocked and the then Jaya Restaurant had good food, fun entertainment and offered good service. MPH was there to buy and browse books. Sadly the mall's expansion did not result in expanded commercial/social activities. I miss the warmth and friendliness of the old mall. Perhaps others do too and perhaps that is why the 'new' mall is failing.
I agree with @Shagress 528
I prefer the old layout.
More spacious.
Feng shui changes as the place goes through the years look at sungei way back in the 70s.
management should not afraid about this type of content. For +ve prespective, may be they can check themselve how to improve traffic in this mall
Growing up in early 80s this used to THE malls for well heeled PJ residents to shop and students from boys and girls schools to hang out. Sad
Back then when I was working in KL/PJ its either Jaya Supermart or Asia Jaya somewhere nearby. There was also a COPPER GRILLE
Aiyah....so empty now....what will happen few years ahead??
Are Reject Shop still there ? In early 1990s fresh out of school I work there.
Reject shop no longer there
Weekends still can see the traffic there...
It got revitalised again when better management came in but due to some problems that team eventually left and jaya slowly declined again.
the parking very mahal
I usually came here with my friends back in secondary school days to play video games at the video arcade centre which was Kathy Toys Store. Other memories includes Delifrance, Jaya Noodle House, Salem Power Station and the lists goes on.
Very cool!
I work there before ...there Jya grocer only a lot ppl and many shops cose dy shifted out during pkp
this place , i remember paretns bringing the family to one chinese restaurant there (before the renovation), then after that i remember begging my dad to go into the toystore to get stuff . and there was one hardware store there tucked into one corner if i remember correctly .having been there aonboth weekdays and weekends , i would say the foot traffic on weekends is slightly better then weekdays , but the upper floors are kinda empty ..as for that mention of carpets , and furniture stores suddenly mushrooming when the mall is on its way out , well , can add mr diy to that list of shops opening in malls that are slowly dying ...
@@soniccdx the shop was Jaya Nooddle house
I remember Kathy's toys.....one of the top toys shop during the 70's 80's and 90's.
As a kid back then, it was the best toy store for me
I am working in PJ but have never been to this mall at all ...
Oh, you should take a look, maybe drop by during your lunch time
I remember there was a toys r us and cold storage aslo got worth mcdonald's ice cream stand in this mall
chinese tea shop post to be pizza hut in 2016
Watching Ola Bola here, but last time upper floors still happening
Ya, they should have incorporate the iconic round staircase as part of the mall's theme
Would like your opinion on whether pearl point is a success after refurbishment.
I heard they are doing well. Have not been to this mall for awhile. But I might do that some day
Do the STRAND MALL, am sure its going to be interesting :) The name itself explains it.
Will definitely take a look
I feel that the new construction never paid any acknowledgement to its heritage and just built a generic modern mall over the older one. The developers failed to understand the nostalgic value of the building. They could have at least incorporated a modernized spiral staircase as some reference to the past. Well, when you create forgettable buildings then you'll be easily forgotten.
The problem you go to mall in the morning or noon ! Any mall in the morning or noon usually empty for example IOI mall 10 to 2 oclock almost the same . If you want judge a mall go after 6 PM that's the right time to judge a mall .
I did mention in this video, that I was there around lunch time, the peak time for weekday traffic
@@chestercheng.realestate right but your title didn't say so ! You should mention it in your title and description special Date and Time of the video you making .
Well I have been to this mall only once, someday I might go to this mall again.
Me staying in SS1 in the 80s.. jaya menjadi tempat mainan...
it'll be more meaningful if you have info on the rental rates, as for me the design is conducive, well-circulated, just the right size for my foot
Only he management knows the rental rates for each floors
It was my favourite mall before Midvalley (& The Gardens) came into the picture
I have a suspicion that the foot traffic isn't being "relocated" elsewhere.
I went to BBBSS in 1993. This was my playing ground 😅
Can la... Myvi also not that cheap these days
