I am a rehabilitation counselor in Atlanta metro, Georgia, USA, nearing retirement. Before I completely lost my mind and entered human services, I finished two degrees in organ performance at Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and was a recitalist. I won the Nashville Chapter student competition and competed in the AGO Southeast Regional Competition. I studied with the late Warren Hutton at the University of Alabama as a post-master's student, and currently study at Alabama with Dr. Faythe Freese. The only good thing I have to say about Obamacare is that it gutted my private practice, so I now have time to practice. It is never too late to have a happy childhood. Investing heavily in the organ world makes up for years of BS in rehab, and there is a lot of BS in rehab. I have no interest in playing a public recital but I love sharing good music with friends. J. S. Bach Sei Gegrusset BWV 768, Marilyn T Oakes, Organist
The Lutheran chorale tune Sei gegrusset has five or seven verses and doesn't fit the Bach setting of chorale, ten variations, and second chorale (Amen). Much scholarly discussion has been made of the grouping of the variations into pedal/no pedal and even period of time in which they might have been written, as no copy exists in Bach's hand. A better theory has been proposed, that the set of variations fits a different text to the same tune, ten verses of O Jesu, edle Gabe, a Communion hymn, plus Amen chorale at the end. If you reverse the sixth and seventh variations, as done in this recording, the compositional tone painting exactly match the poetry. Years later, I heard Alan Morrison play it at Spivey Hall and said, "Ok, that's it, have to learn it." I have an idea that life experience makes a difference in playing this monumental work and I am glad I waited for both that and the chance to study it with Alan, a truly rich experience. The coloratura setting of Komm Heiliger Geist, Come Holy Ghost, from the Leipzig Chorales is lush and is the longest of Bach's compositions for organ. The Gravement is a grand contrapuntal non-fugal work. Bach scholar Peter Williams references Boyvin's Livre d'Orgue and notes the ornamentation ala a French grave, but notes that it cannot be said that this is a French work written for a French organ. This unedited recording features the small Cornet on the upper manual with Flute 8 and Principal 2 on the lower manual. This recording features the Cornet VI, which is actually larger than the 8' Trumpet. This recording features the 16' Dulciaan up an octave, creating a beautiful solo reed stop. Bohm was Bach's organ teacher and also invented the chorale prelude. The Lamb of God from the Leipzig Chorales is one of the most sublimely beautiful works in the literature. Eugene Thayer (1838-1889) was a student of John Knowles Paine who subsequently studied in Germany. He was a prolific composer but like most of the 19th American organ composers, his work largely fell from favor over time.
