- The chromatic fantasy was a compositional form arising in the 16th c., usually in Dorian mode, with a descending half step theme. Sweelinck's Fantasia Chromatica has three sections: the first states the chromatic theme, the second expands the theme, and the third accelerates the theme. Eminent Sweelinck scholar Piet van Djik notes that in Sweelinck's day this might have been played on a single 8' principal stop, with the color coming from the interplay of mean tone harmonics. Equal temperament instruments aren't quite that interesting, so selected registrations changes showcase both the organ and the work. I played the first statement on the 8' principal as a tip of the hat to Heer Sweelinck and Heer Van Dijk. The organ is 1966 Flentrop 2/33 in its original configuration at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Atlanta, Georgia USA. I hope you enjoy.
