Fantasy on an Old Southern Hymn (Foundation) - Sam Batt Owens - Marilyn T. Oakes, Organist

The late Dr. Sam Batt Owens composed this work in 1975 for the rededication of the organ and the new festival trumpet at St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. I heard him play it in recital in Birmingham, Alabama in 1976 and admired his artistry. He gave me his personal manuscript copy. So far as I am aware, he never published this work. The music captures Sam's personality - flamboyant, clever, witty, a master improvisateur, and a Southerner to the tips of his toes - as well as a peek at his spirituality.The organ is Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Sandy Springs, Georgia.
