Which Mic is Right for You? UTFet47 vs WA47F | MMP: Ep.50
“Comparison is the thief of joy” and not having quality gear could cause the feelings of not being good enough. Thankfully, companies like United Studio Technologies and Warm Audio have created the quality of a classic mic, at a fraction of the cost… Enter the #UTFet47 and the #WA47F.
Viewers and listeners should understand that this is not a full shootout of the mentioned mics. However, it is a practical example of each mic in action. No post production processing has been added to each mic, however, output gain reduction was added to attempt perceived level matching.

    Hi Carl, I see that you have tried many replicas of the ELAM 251: WA-251, Antelope, Slate, Sphere... If you had to choose one, which would it be? Have you tried the Peluso 22 251 or GA-251 MKII? Thanks for your help and suggestions.

      @CarlMooreMusic 26 днів тому

      @@adproject8yo! So I think a few things are at play with the emulations… the system you use makes a difference in my honest opinion. I know that they all pretty much mention the emulations function fine on clean preamps but in my experience with each mic, they work best on their respective preamps and at one point each system had those preamps available. I don’t think Slate Digital does anymore. I have not used the 22 251 from Peluso and I’ve only heard files of the GA-251 MKII in my DAW. The Sphere has the most features of the emulation options. Hardware, I think the GA-251 would take the cake of the list you’ve mentioned. Mojave audio MA-1000 is intended to be David Royers take on a 251 too. That could be an option as well. On female voice, I reckon the UT47 (or WA-47FET) would be better, it brings more depth to the low lower mids. But on male voice, especially deeper voices, the WA-47Jr brings good articulation, with less low mid muddiness. The WA-47jr is a good choice for guitar cab too, and for stereo overheads. And for distant room mic as well. Because it's smooth, and often you'd be shelving out the bass and low lower mids a bit anyway.

    🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, Dude, I think the Neumann sounds so much better. They do not sound the same at all. I mean, first of all, it's an imitation of Neumann. I know it's got, like, good sound and everything, but it should be based on itself, not on Neumann U87, you know what I mean? So that's by itself, it has no character in it. And, uh, I think it's, uh, and it's, it's, it's, uh, I don't know, I don't think you should have a mic like that. Have the mic. Do not have imitations of a mic. That's ridiculous, dude. I think your Neumann sounds a hundred percent better. I can hear it. I also own a Neumann too. So I know Neumanns are, like, they sound so good. It sounded better. Uh, I don't know. I find it funny how some people in the comments make it seem like the 103 is an inadequate microphone when people like billie eilish record number one hits on it 😅 These are both amazing premium mics and whatever you think works better for your voice works better for you! It’s all a matter of taste and in the end most people probably would invest their time (and money) more wisely learning about mixing and just working on their ears and music 😊 Thanks for this video! Great comparison!

    • @CarlMooreMusic
      @CarlMooreMusic 2 місяці тому

      @@roman2374 such a valid point. I often mention the factual idea that not one single listener will have a cue track informing them that the song was recorded with TLM103 vs TLM49. Additionally, with all the processing in the post production phase, the goal of reaching a balanced sound overshadows the mics natural sonic character. If there’s too much top end, we’ll just remove the top end, if the mids need a little more help , we boost those frequencies. Good tools do help but to your point, both mics are good tools and there’s proof of it. Thank you for checking out the video, stopping by the channel and interacting with me.

    • @CarlMooreMusic
      @CarlMooreMusic 2 місяці тому

      I recorded them all individually, then I bussed them to a BGV aux and added my processing from there. After that, I automated the levels for consistency

    Good morning. Congratulations for this test, and bravissimo for the quality of your vocal interpretation. It's beautiful! Vocally, musically, the editing of the test video is also excellent and the image processing is splendid too! I was really very happy to find your test (which deserves to be better known) because I am currently in a similar search. So I have a couple of KT2A for stereo (I use them for mixing Home studio in classical music) but they do not react in a strictly identical way. and I ordered two paired Kenetek cells. I hope that this will make it possible to have a more accurate pairing, even if once well calibrated it is currently very correct. They are currently in transit at Paris airport, but I am hopeful of a fast delivery... I admit that I am curious to hear the difference. For the moment I must say that KT2A are absolutely beautiful on voice or instrumental stereo buses (I do not use them on the master track, however). In any case, very happy to have been able to listen to your test.

    • @oscarhuang3768
      @oscarhuang3768 2 місяці тому

      I heard on UA-cam that UTFET47 is inverted. TLM49 sound is normal. This means that the inversion switch was accidentally turned on during recording or the XLR 2 and 3 connectors were reversed when the UTFET was shipped from the factory. You can import your audio into a DAW and add a phaser plug-in. Listen with headphones and you'll see if I'm right.

    • @CarlMooreMusic
      @CarlMooreMusic 2 місяці тому

      @@oscarhuang3768 none of the phase invert switches were incidentally or accidentally engaged on any of the preamps I used during the recording of this video. Mogami Gold called were used. There was nothing wrong there either. I have no need to import the UA-cam audio into my DAW because I recorded all the audio myself. Nothing you mentioned took place. Nonetheless, thanks for checking out the video and commenting
