Yes it is. I tracked a huge hit song for a YMCMB artist using a Manley Reference Cardioid, into a AURORA AUDIO GTQC CHANNEL STRIP, into the Apogee Mini-me, into the Spdif in on the Digi 003 many many moons ago. Plus that rack was later stolen from me. And I upgraded to the C800g, Neve 1073, CL1B combo after that.
I am a two year owner of the Ref C. For the Money it is a not-too-harsh, bright mic and is smoother than a lot of competitors in its price range after EQ to the same Level of brightness. Hoverer this is not an ultra smooth vocal mic and can get a bit ice picky in the high sibilance range (not the 5-7k but rather 12k ish). Compared to a C800g, Chandler Redd, Manley Gold or a C12/251 its lagging behind a bit and I am saying this owning non of the other mics myself but planing to after sufficient time, saving and testing.
I respect your perspective. I was hoping it has just a little more girth to it. I feel like that would help even out the high end hype on this mic. I’d agree that it doesn’t feel like cheap voiced mic but within my locker I felt like I had a better option in the Eden from Lauten Audio or the SA800G from Stam Audio. Thanks for the comment and interaction on the channel!
A Mullard tube helped smooth my Ref C out but it can still be a little bit too bright. You would probably really like the Manley Silver. I think my next mic will be a BeesNeez BU67-269. Would love to hear you put either the Manley Silver or BeesNeez through its paces. I dig your music, great job!
Definitely appreciate that info!!! I ended up sending it back but I have the option to pick it up again and make those upgrades. I’ve highly anticipated trying that BU67-269. The videos I’ve heard were legit and I feel like it would fit in my locker currently. Appreciate the kind words and stopping by the channel!
Lol so my capsule has to be bad or something I get 0 brightness I find myself trying to add air even after tube swap but I get no distortion and is just a roll off on the above 5k portion
So far maybe my favourite mic I've heard on your channel. Crispy, big sound, not harsh, almost like a modern twist on a Sony C800 cross with a U47 ish sound. And sounds good on multiple sources. Winner! Is this your main mic now? I would suggest pairing with the IGS Audio 'ONE LA'. You will fall in love... Beats all LA2A clones in its prices range and above IMO... Enjoy brother! Much Love & Music, AK
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting. I actually returned the mic. Was a fine of the single polar pattern and I felt like I have two other mics in similar price points that do more tonally. I had heard such high praise of the mic but I didn’t experience anything that equated. I’ll have to try out the IGS optical compressor. It’s just so much gear out there and my personal perspective is, if it helps to get me closer to my tonal goal sonically, I’m here for it. Can’t say it enough but, I appreciate the interaction. This stuff helps the channel move along!
@@CarlMooreMusic I totally get that. tbh Im sure you probably have great mics. But at least you know that you don't need the Manley Ref C now. I think the silver one is great from their range but very pricey! Probably more balanced than the Ref C. Im always expanding too but just don't have time to make videos but yours are great. Yes the IGS has that nice upper harmonics that the LA2A's are known for for a fraction of the price. I am about to get the IGS Tube Core 19 inch version for bus compression to trial. Keep up the videos Carl. Much blessings. Always watching.
Imo for the price, not it is not THAT good. I feel like the TLM 103 does the bright crispy modern sound better for half the cost. Man go get your money back and get a U67 Reissue so I can hear you on that haha. Great video production as always!
Bro I already sent that thing back 😂. It’s cardioid only, almost the same price as my u87 and the forward mode on the Eden does a better job at that sound than this mic. Plus you get two more pick up patterns. I was curious but I didn’t like it enough to keep. The 67reissue is on the list! I’m waiting on something else though before I grab it
Lmao a Fet vs a tube lmao 🤣 it's about getting fet sound with warmth .... now I'm wondering why one would hate on cardioid when most recordings of vocals are In front of the mic 🤔
😂😂😂😂 I seriously tried that hoping for more magic and I didn’t get it in my opinion. I liked it but not as much as I was promised, and I’ve got 2 other mics that do a better job on the stereo spectrum of capturing a similar voicing.
@@CarlMooreMusic 🤔🤔🤔 how long did you hang it upside down? Takes at 5 sessions, 10 hand grabs for photo purposes and a couple different spits. You’re welcome
@@CarlMooreMusic I use to own one then I learned it was cheaper options that was better or can compete with the ref c , and also the ref c can get crazy harsh around 5k to 10k
Fantastic brother.. I really like the HA 73 combo.. It was nice and balanced
Much appreciation!!! I’m always a fan of using 1073 style preamps on vocals!

@@CarlMooreMusic I prefer your SA800g as well...
Great videos!
Appreciate the kind words!

It can be really unflattering on some voices.
For whatever reason, I feel like this mic sounds better upside down. Like, all the blood goes to basket and it becomes more intelligible. Yep.
