"Hello Goodbye, Ian." My Memories of JOY DIVISION in London.
Do you love Joy Division like I do? Then I think you'll love this video. I give my personal and emotional account of what it was like to see the band live in London in 1979 and 1980. I even met the band briefly after one of their shows.
I saw Joy Division many times (9) and I give details of what each concert was like and what they played. Like the rest of their fans, I cried when Ian Curtis died on May 18, 1980 and I still feel sad today when I think of him. This was a very emotional video for me to make. I hope you enjoy it.
Also, during my time in London in 1978, I saw Sid Vicious play the Electric Ballroom on August 15th and met Sid and Nancy after the show. Here's a link to that video if you are interested: ua-cam.com/video/hRkLfgLxhSY/v-deo.html

    Oh my gosh; what a story! “Hello and goodbye”😭 I’m 43 and I’ve been a fan for 30 years! I’ve seen Peter Hook and New Order. Thanks so much for sharing this story. It was so interesting and moving. I can picture the scene of you talking to them. Ian Curtis is my musical hero. Dead Souls is also my favourite. I went to his resting place in Macclesfield this year. Just me and my boyfriend, a cold, windy day and I said thank you to him for all the music. It was just me and my boyfriend standing there. What a moment! Thanks so much again for telling the story!

    Brilliant Maggie, really interesting. I noted you mentioned that you hadn’t seen the NMTB collage before. It was originally a promotional poster but also given out folded with the 11 track album and the one sided single ”Submission” that Richard Branson had instructed be immediately sent out to counteract the influx of 12 track records that were coming in to England from France. It was packaged with catalogue number ”SPOTS 001” and quite sought after nowadays. Once again, great video, thank you 😀

      Thanks for watching and the compliments! That's a tough question that I don't think I can answer. They're both very different. The Sex Pistols caused such a revolution in music and culture and had more things attached to them - Malcolm McLaren, Seditionaries, the Bromley Contingent, art work, fashion etc - and they inspired Joy Division. So I guess I would say the SP were a bigger tidal wave that shook the world, and me as well. But on any given day, I play both of them on the turntable. Thanks again!

Those were some wonderful times. My favorite people weirdos , alley cats , X , Mike Morris ,and an odd choice mainly because I knew some of them personally T.S.O.L. , oh and don't forget the Zeros or suburban lawns. Oh the masque I think I visited only twice or once and a quarter...I did not like that smelly basement. Where I lived ( peck park area in Pedro) dancing waters and later in Long Beach Fenders ball room. And further south Cuckoos nest.(Although red neck was were not my cup of tee) I wish I wasn't such a lazy sod , I could write a book with all of the anecdotes I have.

    Fascinating video as always, Maggie. For the record, you saw a Joy Division show the day after I was born...lol. It's great you made this video because for most people, Joy Division is a mythical band they heard after Ian Curtis's death, and his tragic demise coloured everything. You experienced them some 9 times when they were around, when they were a functioning band, and it was different. You've seen them in COLOUR (as many photographs associated with the mystique of the group are in black and white) and you heard them in the same hall. I like how you emphasized that they were a rocking band because not everyone is aware of that. Live recordings make it obvious, they are very intense and often faster than the studio versions, less mechanical without Martin Hannett on board (who did a fantastic job, don't get me wrong). I can"t get tired of "Disorder" live in Paris 1979 for instance. I'm a huge Cure fan so I'm glad you mentioned them and saw them so early on, even if you're not a fan yourself. I hope you heard some of their later albums - "Pornography" or "The Top" aren't exactly just pure pop albums :) I tried to look up the show you may have seen but i'm not sure (they played the Railway Hotel and the Nashville before you saw them with JD). Also, Laurence Tolhurst posted this about the show you attended : "But I understand Peter Hook has a new book out wherein he speaks about a certain 1979 gig that Joy Division supported the Cure at? Well I remember that particular gig too and my memory is somewhat different from Pete's. See we arranged a show at the Marquee club in London for every Sunday for a month (called it a month of Sundays I think) and picked every band that opened for us. Because we, LIKED them and wanted to help them out. Not for any reason other than that."

    • @WhyNotGoPlaces
      @WhyNotGoPlaces 5 днів тому

      Thanks for watching and for your comments! I figured some people might like my video because JD are a bit mythical. Every time I have mentioned in the past that I saw them live, people seem stunned. As I said in the video, the band I joined in LA in the 80s, Kommunity FK, were very JD influenced and the singer was so impressed that I saw them live and loved them, he knew I would be perfect for his band. I don't remember the "Month of Sundays" at the Marquee. That's great that The Cure organized it. Peter Hook says in his book "The Cure never even acknowledged us" on that night, which I took to mean that they didn't socialize with them backstage. Interesting that they liked the band a lot. It was a great gig and I was hooked after that night. I'm really looking forward to seeing Peter Hook in May 2025. I do like some Cure songs, the more rocking ones. The stuff I hear on the radio these days is always the pop stuff like "Love Cats." My friend Toby Goldstein, whom I'm going to see The Damned with in Orlando in June 2025, used to work for The Cure doing PR. She also liked the Pornography album. Thanks again!

There’s a Joy Division tribute called Transmission who play in the U.K. who are really authentic that are definitely worth seeing if you get the chance. Thank you, for this very touching video. I first heard them on the Sunday night radio program here in Dallas in 1980. I still remember talking about Ian Curtis death at Metamorphosis Records around that time. George Gimarc the DJ talked about it on his show. When I finally saw New Order in 1985 they didn't play any Joy Division, maybe still too painful for them.

    • @WhyNotGoPlaces
      @WhyNotGoPlaces 5 днів тому

      Thanks for watching! I saw New Order when they first came to L.A. I didn't mention it in the video because I wanted to concentrate on JD, but I didn't love New Order like I loved JD. I thought Bernard's voice was a little weak and the songs were not as intense or heavy. They were very good, but no Joy Division. That's why I was so surprised when I saw Peter Hook live because I thought his voice was really good. I wonder why they didn't tap him as the singer for New order. I don't know why New Order don't do JD songs, but Peter Hook also mentions in his book that the other members fought him in court, trying to prevent him from doing the songs live. I'm glad he won. It's a great show.

    Hello Maggie. Great channel! I saw Joy Division with Buzzcocks at the King Georges Hall in Blackburn Lancashire in 1979, it was a great gig. I was 13 y/o. Unknown Pleasures still sounds brilliant today.

    Strange coincidence... Ian Curtis (singer of Joy Division) died May 18, 1980 by suicide by hanging. Chris Cornell (singer of Soundgarden) died May 18, 2017 by suicide by hanging.

    When you see Ian on stage or a rare TV appearance Ian's eyes seem to be in a very dark place,he seems to really live the emotions he sings about.

    Excellent video maggie. Was lucky enough to see them in November 78 as a support band. Think it might have been their first London gig. I’m visiting London at the moment,and was up the west end yesterday. Was sitting in a pub having soto eat only to find out it was the old marquee,why was weird but cool. Went to Denmark st convent garden etc. first time I’ve been there for a decade. Shame seeing no Astoria. Would loved to have seen that first pil gig. Thanks Stuart

      Hi Stuart, Thanks for watching again. How nice that you were visiting the old London music sites. Were you at the old Marquee site on Wardour Street? I thought that was apartments now. Called Soho Lofts I think. We're in London for a couple of days in January, so I may be visiting Soho again. Technically I went to the second PIL gig. They played Christmas and Boxing Day and I went on the 26th. Another fantastic show at The Rainbow. I miss the Astoria and the Marquee too. Great venues. Thanks again!

      @ yes,sorry should have said the new one not the original,the new one is now the Montagu Pyke pub which is on Charing Cross road next to st martins college which was where the new marquee was. I didn’t even know it had relocated before the new one shut in the 90s. Was great having a wonder around soho.

    Great review again . Have to say this was a Northern sound and definitively Manchester . Out of a dour industrial backdrop. Not a London thing .

      Yes I guess that most of the bands Joy Division played with were from the north of England. Great talent can come out of dour places and times. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks Maggie, Joy Division were unique and Ian's lyrics were something else. Such a prolific writer. A very sad ending. I read his wife's book, very interesting.

      @WhyNotGoPlaces 8 днів тому

      Thanks for watching. I may read that book if you say it's interesting. Even though Peter Hook spent a lot of time with Ian, I don't think they were very close. He mentions in the book that he wasn't invited to Ian's wedding. I think Ian was closer to Bernard.

      @WhyNotGoPlaces I forget his wife's name, but she gives the reader a more intimate insight into their life. Ian comes across as a bit strange, secretive and selfish with old fashioned views about women. Also very troubled. They really had nothing in common and I felt sorry for both of them. Have you seen the movie Control based on the book? Well worth watching. I was confused at first because the actor who plays Ian looks so much like him, that I thought it was him and I was thinking 'how can that be?' Then the penny dropped! Haha

    'Closer' has been my all time favorite album since I first bought it in 1990. Hooky is my favorite musician. And I know a lot of people say it, but it's not New Order without Peter Hook.

    • @WhyNotGoPlaces
      @WhyNotGoPlaces 8 днів тому

      Hooky is great and he's a got a great singing voice too. I don't think he's friendly with New Order. He mentions in his book about lawsuits between them going on for years and how they tried to prevent him from playing Joy Division songs live. I can't wait to see him again.
