On holiday in Fuertevetura Jan 1999 Capt Sensible and his family was there ,and a guitarist from the Banshees was rhere by pure chance , they didn't speak to each other . . he was great with us , down to earth , he gpt up on karaoke in the bar and did a Monkees song .. Only a few of us there , absolutely fanrastic , swinging the microphone around giving the girl ccompare a real fright . Enjoying your videos , binging on them . Saw them at Parr Hall Warrington 2012 , still got the ticket and put the photos on my blog .
What a nice memory! I always liked Captain. He's so fun to watch onstage too. I love The Damned. I wish they played the Southeast, but they haven't lately. My friend Toby Goldstein, who I interviewed for this channel, loves Captain too. We thought about flying to NYC to see them play, but we didn't. Maybe next time. :)
Tomata was such a key figure in US alternative-culture... a real intersection between the queer community (like the Cockettes) and punk. He had such a big impact in all the places he lived.
You are so right. He was a very key figure in the gay and punk community. I really liked him. And his band The Screamers were so early on to be doing that kind of sound. Thanks for watching!
I saw in them in Toronto first date of the tour , got to meet captain and Paul preshow and then met rat afterwards Awesome to hear this interview with them Also to mention Paul gray has played on the black album and strawberries , which are amazing damned albums 😊 thanks for sharing this one !
Absolutely brilliant! Amazing you were around to interview the damned that early in their career and early punk scene. And you had a fanzine!! Funny to hear captain had a water pistol with him lol. Amazing you saw them in that house in the lounge all having to doss on matresses :-) I saw them for first time at Glasgow Apollo on 4th December 1979, on machine gun etiquette tour (2 days before they did top of the pops, I Just cant be happy today). It was life changing! I was 15 at the time, and became a life long fan. I was one of the ones asking you to upload this video on the damned. It was worth waiting for. Thanks. Dave Vanian in a gas Mask, Captain Naked lol. I am surprised you didnt take pics of them with your camera or record them on a tape recorder. Footage and recordings from that era are priceless! Nice to see the footage at the end from Sydney. I saw them a few days later in Perth and met them before and after the gig. They are still super friendly, especially Rat, who was out in the street chatting to us with a cigarette in one hand and glass of wine in tbe other. He genuinely seems happy to be back playing in the damned. I asked him about his search for the holly grail and he still wants to keep doing that, too, he said he enjoys the search. Good on him! Do what makes you happy. Go to see them if you can, they were great! Thanks again for posting this, it made my weekend. Look forward to more of your stories / Uploads. The world was an amazing place to live in back then. So many interesting characters. A wonderful time.
Thank you so much for asking me to do it! Sometimes I don't think I have much of a story and then when I get going, I realize it might be interesting to people. So thanks again for giving me a nudge! I don't know why I didn't shoot pictures. We do have a couple of shots of them on the front cover of the fanzine, so maybe I did. If so, I have since lost them. I remember like it was yesterday when Captain came out naked playing bass. It was great! So glad you saw them recently and chatted with Rat. I live in Florida and unfortunately, many bands don't swing by the Southeast when they tour. Thanks again!
Hey Maggie!! I feel like we're old friends! I've been watching your channel for a year now! I finally subscribed and just wanted to thank you for all the memories. You certainly have a lot of great stories! I've been reliving life vicariously through you!!!
I luv this kind of stuff. Priceless memories, real history. About 84, I was in Carnaby St. Shop was called Melandi and I was trying on a jacket checking myself in front of the mirror. Looked at the couple behind me at it was Dave Vanian and his girlfriend, I paused and then turned round to make sure it was him. Shook his hand and had a 5 minute chat about clothes, shoes he was wearing etc. really friendly guy. Made time for ya. One of those moments when you’re in the right place , right time. I later saw an off shot band he was in “The Phantom Chords” and they were really good. Good to see the guys still going, brilliant. See if I can get tickets to Camden for December, that’ll be great. All the best from North London. ❤️
Thank you for watching! I remember The Phantom Chords. I never got a chance to see them. How nice you got to meet Dave Vanian. He always seemed very nice.
Saw The Damned in ‘96? In Atlanta so good! Saw the pistols in DC in 2002. The Slits played my town in early 2000’s Ari Up (rip) was so nice and cool to chat with. Love your channel so great to hear the stories!
my missus used to hang around in croydon with them, saw vanian in his y fronts ,2 mates of mine rented rooms from scabies dad in mertstham ,scabies dad collected nazi stuff used to deal with lemmy
The dammed got kicked off the anarchy tour..because they said they would play ..when the pistols were banned..the clash wouldn't play..always found the dammed to be very jealous of the pistols..even to this day...did you know the pistols minus john / using someone else are playing 3 gigs for a local venue..raising funds for the venue this summer..playing n.m.t.b ..🎸
I did not know that story. Interesting. Yes, I heard on the news about that gig. I think the tickets are already sold out. It's nice they are giving the money to charity, to a venue in Shepherds Bush I think. Thanks again for watching!
Did you hear about the 3 shows the Sex Pistols are playing at Bush Hall, London, with Frank Carter singing? All sold out in one second. I tried, but wasn’t to be. They’re playing NMTB in its entirety. It’ll be amazing! Let’s be honest, John didn’t even sing the songs properly, he sang them in his PIL voice, not the Pistols voice, so this will probably be closer to the original than with John, plus without the nastiness and constant need to be contrary at whatever cost. Grow up.
Yes, I did hear about it. I would love to go. I don't know Frank Carter though, but he will probably do a great job if they picked him. Thanks again for watching!
It’s a great channel , the other ones you posted were good too

i hope you can interview them again,I think they would love to reminisce on this especially about the "too fat" bit😂
I would LOVE to interview them again. It would be fun to talk about that interview way back when. Thanks for watching.
Another great video, well done. 😊 I've seen The Damned so many times. Great musicians, great personalities and they evolved with each album.
I love your channel and just discovered The Damned after sleeping on them for years. Thank you for this!
Saw the damned in 1985 los Angeles , it was a rowdy great show... lost one of my creepers.
Saw them on the 10th anniversary gigs a year later

That's cool! Such a great early punk crowd. I still love Kid Congo and buy his records.

I saw the Phantom Chords here in Michigan…and Dave high fived me as he lept off the stage!

The Damned 1st British punk band to release a single and album and 1st Punk Band from UK to play America
Thanks for watching another video! Yes, it was so exciting when they came to L.A. First British punk band to arrive, and they were great too. :)
