I like Richard Jobson & his output but I met him in unusual circumstances. It was at an open-air Spear of Destiny gig. When we arrived all the bands were playing football on a flat, grassy area behind the stage. Kirk Brandon, Stan Stammers, Richard Jobson, there they all were playing football. I said to a few mates, 'let's go over & have a look' & as we did so the ball came our way with Jobson running after it. He'd never have got there before the ball reached me so I stepped forward & kicked it back. Jobson meanwhile had carried on his run & after I'd kicked it, he came straight over the top of the ball with a crunching tackle halfway up my shins. In a refereed match it'd have been a straight red! He offered no apology, muttered something condescending before turning to rejoin the game. A mate of mine from Cambridge, Malcolm Ridley, was going to smash his face in (& would have done too!) but I calmed things down & said 'let it go'.

That's an interesting story! You must have been in a band at that time. He doesn't sound like he was very nice. I don't remember him being overly friendly when I met him. It was more of a "press" business lunch, without the press of course! Though my primary memory is just how nervous I was pretending to be a journalist. I'm not a very good liar so the whole experience was stressful. Now I can get a laugh out of it, which is fun. Thanks for sharing your story. And thanks as always for watching my videos!

Thank you M' & as you know I think you're wonderful but yes, & again without saying too much due to not wanting to be libelous, I think he was known to be a difficult character, & one capable of real some real thuggery too! Well done M'. everyone loves you.

Thanks you so much Tommy for always watching my videos! I'm glad you found it interesting. To me it's a story of how things were so different before you could google someone. You wouldn't be able to get away with something like that now - if there are any record companies left, that is. Hello from hot Florida!

Margaret I absolutely loved that story to do those things back then must have been fantastic.
I saw the skids at rock city Nottingham about 5 6 years ago absolutely fantastic gig.
The guitarist from Big Country Bruce Watson plays in the Skids now with his son on bass i think .
My favourite place in London and anywhere is Portobello Rd especially Rough trade record shop which is iconic.
I absolutely love your stories especially meeting sid and Nancy please keep these coming. Hope you like The Stranglers one of my favourite bands. ❤this channel

I remember there were some interesting clothes shops there. If Rough Trade is still there, that's fantastic! I did like the Stranglers, especially "Hanging Around" and "Always the Sun." I wonder if they still play. Thanks again for watching my videos. :)

Hi Maggie, amazing story involving Richard Jobson!! And by coincidence, I happened to see the Skids with Richard Jobson live this evening in Perth West Australia! They put on a fantastic show! Richard has a great sense of humour, I am sure he would laugh if he heard your story via this video :-)
I think you have to be applauded for leaving America and travelling to London at such a young age. You were rewarded with amazing experiences. I'm glad you are sharing them via these video uploads.
Ps - I saw the damned out here in Perth about a month ago, they were still great live too. It would be great if you coukd share some video stories about your experience at their gigs. The Damned were off their heads live in those days, also Captains pink and yellow ocapi suit was quite a sight to see! -)

Thanks for watching! I thought The Skids were in Australia now. I think they go to the UK next. They were never big in America, so they may not come here. Glad they did a great show and that you enjoyed it. What a coincidence that you just saw them live tonight! Yes, he would probably laugh if he heard my story. I wonder if he would remember me. He probably did many many interviews back then.
Good suggestion on The Damned. I love that band. I may do a video on their first trip to LA when I interviewed them in 1977. I remember Captain was naked at the end of the show. He was so fun to watch onstage. Thanks again!

First 3 singles I ever bought were Charade, Working For the Yankee Dollar & Into the Valley. Followed swiftly by Silly Thing , Pistols. Then Damned Damned and NMTB.
I saw Big Country in 1983 . We bought tickets at £5 . On the door they gave everyone £1.50 back as Stewart Adamson had said the price was too high for kids . About 200 ppl only at Marine Hall, Fleetwood UK

I'm very impressed how you moved to London at such a young age, worked under the table, dealt with the boss from hell and had adventures. You sounded very self-motivated! I've always thought Jobson looks a lot like that Brit comedian Rob Brydon... quirky yes, sexy... no. The sad thing about the lunch is the band was probably billed for it out of any eventual earnings they were owed. ;)

Yet another great video and story. I too have met some of my hero's off stage and sometimes I was not impressed by them in person. Sometimes they lose their mystique and presence when they are off stage and we are not use to seeing that side of them. That's cool that you were able to work in England despite the harsh work permit system there. I moved to London during the mid-90s, it only last three months because I could not get a job. Even Sainsbury's told me I could not work without a permit. 🤣 The only job I could find was as a bicycle messenger, it paid under the table £20 per day, which was not going to cut it for living expenses. I have a question for you and maybe you could do a video about this in the near future.....you were in London during 1979, how big was the mod revival and the 2-Tone scene during that year there?

    • @WhyNotGoPlaces
      @WhyNotGoPlaces  6 місяців тому +1

Thanks for the compliment! I'm glad you liked this story. Yes it's true that when a person is in front of you and not onstage or on TV, it's totally different. When I worked at Top Shop, they never asked about a work permit, which is kind of strange when I look back on it. That's cool you were there in the 90s. I was there too. I worked at the Astoria, again with no permit. The pay was terrible so I suppose they were desperate.
Yes, there was a huge 2-tone scene when I was there in the late 70's, but it wasn't what I was in to, so I didn't see many of those shows. I did like the Specials though, and once the singer Terry Hall came into my Top Shop boutique. I was very star-struck with him! He seemed nice.
Also, the first time I ever saw The Cure - which was 1978 I think - they were playing a small club opening for a mod band, which I can't remember the name of. Most of the crowd were there to see this mod band and not The Cure. My friend Sue and I talked to Robert Smith afterwards backstage. He was very nice and seemed to like Sue. So yes the mod scene and the 2-tone scene were big in the late 70's. Those were the days.:)

Well Maggie what can I say, you are a naughty woman. So you were not a journalist, sorry to tell you by a fluke we knew. Sally who was with me, by chance went into Top Shop to buy her boyfriend a present for his birthday on route. As you came in, she nudged me and said that girl was working in Top Shop earlier. If she has an American accent it is definitely her. We heard you talk and bingo we had the right person. Virgin had an account in many restaurants, this was one, so we thought we would drag you along and gee you up. Nicky (Henderson) is my cousins name, that way I can comment on lots of things without people saying is that Jobbo, so I am now busted. Guess I am busted now, your face when we suggested snails on the menu is priceless. Sorry only pulling your leg, I am not the great man. I have gone to quite a few concerts over the last few years. First time I met Jobbo was with the Armoury Show at an Open air concert, anti heroin I believe at The Crystal Palace Bowl in London. A lot of the groups were behind a fence, we called over John McGeoch and Jobbo came over. Spoke to us for about 5 minutes. That was in the early 80s. In the last few years, I have spoke to Jobbo at Belfast and Leicester and went to an audience with Jobbo around August time this year. Came out with some great stories. For a period, Bruce Watson (Big Country) and his son Jamie were filling up the Skids line up. As Big Country done a full tour they went back out and Richard had to get a new band, they are really good. Also Skids song "Saints are coming" was covered by Green Day and U2 to raise money for the New Orleans hurricane disaster, if any of what I put down was already down sorry folks. Keep the videos going Maggie really enjoy them.

He was interesting I suppose. I wouldn't say he was super-friendly, though, but he was cordial. It felt like a business meeting to me. He probably did lots of interviews with journalists and maybe he was tired of them, I don't know. It was such a long time ago, my primary memory was how uncomfortable I was pretending to be something I wasn't - a journalist. I remember asking him lots of questions about how the band started, how long they had been playing, their influences, etc. I do remember him saying they were influenced by The Clash. I should have mentioned that.
